In the most direct confrontation between Israel and Iran to date, the two regional enemies exchanged fire for hours during a volatile night in the Golan Heights. The extended barrage of fire comes amid soaring tensions between Israel and Iran, two rivals battling for regional influence, and less than two days after the United States withdrew from the deal to curb Iran's nuclear program.Israel said more than 20 rockets were launched by Iranian forces in Syria towards Israeli-claimed territory late Wednesday, often criss-crossing across the clear night skies. A number of those rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome aerial defense system, resulting in bright and sudden explosions.Iran's leaders have not yet issued a response to the Israeli accusations or the military strikes, but if confirmed it would be the first time Iranian forces have fired rockets directly at Israeli forces.Israel retaliated with what appeared to be surface-to-surface missiles, and Syrian anti-aircraft batteries hosed the sky with fire in an effort to intercept them. Thunderclaps of Israeli artillery fire reverberated across the frontier between Syria and Israel, with the faint sound of impact echoing back moments later. All night, drones buzzed overhead, heard but not seen in the darkness. In a statement delivered shortly after midnight Thursday, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces pinned the blame for the rocket fire on the Quds Force, an elite division of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, which has forces in Syria and is often seen as the face of Iran's regional ambitions.Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the rockets, which were targeted at front-line Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights, were all either downed by aerial defense systems or fell short and landed in Syria.Conricus said Israel responded by successfully hitting dozens of Iranian targets in Syria in what he described as "the largest operation against Iranian targets" in years."Israel has hit almost all of Iran's infrastructure in Syria," Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Thursday morning. "If it will rain in Israel, there will be a biblical flood on the other side." He reiterated Israel's stance that this latest offensive was not an ongoing operation."This is not a vast victory or the battle of Stalingrad. It's limited to us and the Quds force in Syria," Liberman said.On Wednesday night, state-run Sana TV, in southern Syria, carried reports that Israel had fired several missiles at the city of Baath in Quneitra, none of which resulted in casualties.A short time later, Syrian state-run media reported that while dozens of "hostile" Israeli missiles had been intercepted in Syrian airspace, at least two others had hit an ammunition depot and destroyed a radar site. The targets included rocket launchers, intelligence posts, military command posts, and weapons depots. No Israeli fighter jets were hit in the strikes, but Conricus said they came under heavy anti-aircraft fire. He added that "ground assets were also used to strike into Syria." 3048

It is a ceremony which has been branded "awful" and "sexist" and criticized for taking tennis "back to zero."Much to the dismay of many on social media, some of the sport's leading young players taking part in this week's Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan were on Sunday forced to choose a female model, who had the letter 'A' or 'B' hidden on her body, to determine the round-robin group they would play in at the tournament. The players were then escorted down a catwalk, arm-in-arm with the model, who would reveal the letter -- which corresponded to the round-robin group -- to the audience and cameras. French tennis player Alize Cornet tweeted: "Good job ATP World Tour. Supposed to be a futurist event right? #backtozero."Also on Twitter, tennis coach Judy Murray, who is the mum of former world No.1 Andy Murray, described the ceremony as "awful."Writing for sport360.com, journalist Reem Abulleil, who was at the draw ceremony, wrote: "There was inappropriate dancing, gloves that were removed by a player's teeth, and many more cringe-worthy moments but I'll spare you the details."Most of the players looked visibly awkward, while some laughed their way through it. I personally felt deeply sad watching it all unfold."The ceremony was sponsored by Red Bull and, in a joint statement, the drinks company and the ATP apologized for the offense which had been caused."The intention was to integrate Milan's rich heritage as one of the fashion capitals of the world," read the statement."However, our execution of the proceedings was in poor taste and unacceptable. We deeply regret this and will ensure that there is no repeat of anything like it in the future."  1682

INDIANAPOLIS — In a rematch from four years ago, Democrat J.D. Ford beat Republican incumbent state Senator Mike Delph. As of Wednesday morning, Ford had a six-point lead on Delph for Indiana's Senate District 29.Ford is the first openly gay person elected to the Indiana General Assembly. "I think it's really time for us LGBTQ+ Hoosiers to have a voice in our General Assembly," Ford said.In 2014, Ford lost to Delph by about 2,300 votes for the District 29 Senate seat. Delph had been serving in the Indiana state Senate since 2005. In November 2017, he was sent to Puerto Rico to help with the recovery from Hurricane Maria. In 2014, Delph tweeted his frustration about a delayed vote on a gay marriage ban. Delph championed the ban, which included language that would also bar civil unions. Delph lashed out at members of his own party, the media and the "self absorbed Godless culture that is fast tracking our nation to ruin."LGBTQ Victory Fund, an organization that works to increase the number of openly LGBTQ officials in government, released a statement celebrating Ford's win.“The Rainbow Wave has arrived in Indiana in a spectacular way,” said Annise Parker, president and CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund and the former mayor of Houston. “Tonight JD made political history in becoming the first openly LGBTQ person ever elected to the Indiana General Assembly – a milestone moment for a state that was one of the few to have never elected an openly LGBTQ state legislator."According to the LGBTQ Victory Institute, there are currently four openly LGBTQ elected officials in the state: South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Indianapolis City-County Council Zach Adamson, Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Cure and Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees member Sue Wanzer.Ford will be the fifth."Yes, this is a historical moment, but it's not about me," Ford said Tuesday night. "It's about the LGBTQ+ Hoosiers and generations to come that can be proud of what we attempted to do and did do." 2136

It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed. The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record. Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. The average Arctic sea ice coverage in August was the third smallest on record, about 29 percent below the 1981-2010 average. 1509
