SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was shot in San Diego's Shelltown neighborhood Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police confirm.According to San Diego Police, the shooting happened just after noon at the La Michoacana grocery store located at 1702 Vesta Street. The suspect, a man in his 20s, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.The owner, a 40-year-old man, opened the register and gave the man money, police said. The suspect went to a second cash register and demanded money. The employee opened the second register and gave the suspect money.As the suspect was turning to leave, the owner pulled out a handgun. The suspect turned to the owner and the owner shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the abdomen and in the wrist, police say.The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. 879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Proposition 16 takes on the issue of affirmative action, which has been banned in California since the mid-1990s.Voters approved the ban on affirmative action in the form of Proposition 209 in 1996. It added a new section to the State Constitution which “generally banned the consideration of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting in California,” according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.Ahmad Mahmuod is a San Diego native and third-year student at UC Berkeley. He plans to become an attorney.“Growing up, I've never known a single black lawyer,” Mahmuod said. “Even coming to UC Berkeley, I've had challenges connecting with other black male lawyers.”He approves of Proposition 16.“You can’t be what you can’t see,” Mahmuod said. “I do see when companies and environments and campuses are more diverse and inclusive, that they thrive, and they end up doing better.”Legal analyst Dan Eaton examined the Yes on 16 ads airing on television.“Proposition 16 takes on discrimination. Some women make as little as 42 percent of what a man makes. San Diego Police say 12-year-old Lani Pace went missing from the 5200 block of Lewison Court before 5 p.m. after her parents left their home to run errands. Lani was at home with her 10-year-old sister, Lily, police said.When Lani's parents returned home about an hour later, she was not there and her sister didn't see her leave, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 100 migrants detained in Texas were flown to San Diego's Lindbergh Field Friday for processing due to a backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector, U.S. Border Patrol officials said. “Currently, ICE aircraft are providing flights from RGV Sector to Del Rio and San Diego Sectors. We are also transporting individuals from Yuma Sector to El Centro Sector and from the Rio Grande Valley Sector to the Laredo Sector by bus. These are additional steps DHS is taking to mitigate the challenges posed by the unprecedented number of people in CBP custody,” said Theron Francisco, Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. Once in San Diego, the migrants were transported from the airport to the Border Patrol’s Brown Field Station in the South Bay. According to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison, the migrants will go through general processing and screening, with the hopes of adhering to the national 20-day detention rule. The detention rule states migrant families cannot be held in detention for more than 20 days. After the initial screening at the border station, Immigration and Customs Enforcement will take over processing. Prior to the Texas-to-San Diego transfer, the selected migrants -- most of them being families -- went through health screenings to determine if they were healthy enough for travel. Harrison said there will be three flights per week, with the planes being ICE-contracted commercial charter flights. Harrison added the Rio Grande Valley facility is 200 percent over capacity, making the transfer of migrants to San Diego necessary. “We got to give the people in Rio Grande Valley some relief,” he said. In addition to San Diego, Harrison said it’s possible that migrants from Texas could be transferred to border stations in Detroit, Buffalo and Miami. According to Harrison, as of May 10, border agents have apprehended over 500,000 migrants who have entered the U.S. illegally -- an average of over 4,500 per day. 1991
