ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Within a quiet lab, are scattered fragments of America’s storied past.“I never thought I'd be doing anything like this,” said Kenneth McNeill, an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.He also spent three years in the reserves and now is a part of the “Veterans Curation Program,” which provides training in archiving and archaeology.“I think one thing that happens a lot is that we just exist, and we don't think about things that happened in the past,” McNeill said.In the lab, though, the past is never out of reach.The artifacts come from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who discovered the items at sites across the country during the excavation and construction of major projects, like dams and canals.“The Army Corps of Engineers had a need for people to do this curation work and the veterans have a need to find work and gain new skills and feel comfortable getting back into the workforce,” said Sarah Janesko, administrator of the Veterans Curation Program.The lab spaces are provided around the country by New South Associates, a company which specializes in archaeology and partnered with the Army Corps to train the veterans.“They feel like they're part of this larger mission to preserve our history and the cultural materials that come with it,” Janesko said.In just over 10 years, the Army Corps said the program has trained nearly 700 veterans, with 72% of them landing permanent jobs, some with the Smithsonian and National Park Service, while another 19% have gone on to further their studies in college.“It also gives us a sense of purpose, which is something I think veterans sometimes need when they separate from the military,” McNeill said. “We live in an area that has a lot of history to it. So, it's good that we are helping restore some of these things.”All of this happening, while they gain new skills, along with a deeper appreciation of the past. 1909

ALPINE (CNS) - A ceremony will be held at the Alpine Community Center Saturday to induct 20 honorees on the Alpine Veterans Wall of Fame.The ceremony will feature a performance by local color guards and an appearance by the Patriot Guard Riders in addition to tributes to current members of the wall. The monument, which opened on Memorial Day in 2011, includes roughly 800 tiles, representing active-duty military members and veterans from all eras and branches of the military."Our No. 1 goal is to say thank you and that wall is a huge thank you to those who wore the uniform," Wall of Fame Chairman Dan Foster said. "I want them to know that someone cared."The ceremony is expected to begin at 9 a.m. and is free to attend. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- An 86-year-old man was hit and killed in the parking lot of an Alpine shopping center Thursday evening, according to authorities. Police say a truck hit the man on the 1200 block of Alpine Boulevard around 4:12 p.m. Thursday. Investigators say the driver of the truck didn’t see the man and backed over him outside a Chase Bank.A worker at a nearby Carls Jr. said the man was stuck under the truck following the accident. Authorities said the incident was a tragic accident and the driver won't face any charges.   572

(KGTV) -- Four off-duty marines along with a rescue team rescued a hiker having a medical emergency on a hiking trail near Los Angeles Sunday.According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a team received the rescue call around 4 p.m. Sunday near Switzer Falls.When the rescue team arrived, they found four off-duty marines from Camp Pendleton who had run into the hiker and carried him upstream for a quicker rescue.Officials say the hiker wasn’t injured and was taken to the hospital to recover.Watch he rescue video in the player below:  581

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is urging travelers from eight additional states to self-quarantine for 14 days as it awaits a decision on the reopening of indoor dining in New York City. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a television interview that he plans to send state police and health and liquor officials to New York City on Tuesday night ahead of his decision expected Wednesday. Last week, Cuomo and counterparts in New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory requiring people from states with "increased prevalence of COVID-19" to quarantine for two weeks. That advisory applies to states with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents, or a test positivity rate higher than 10%.Tuesday, California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, and Tennessee were added to New York’s travel advisory. Those states join Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.The Democratic governor said he’s worried by reports that dining in closed, indoor areas with air-conditioned systems could lead to spikes in COVID-19.
