That might be because San Diego was the second most popular California destination for Airbnb hosts.Airbnb said Monday that San Diego County hosts earned a combined 2 million in supplemental income, welcoming about 482,400 guests from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. In the City of San Diego alone, hosts earned about million and saw 345,000 guests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Months after her husband passed away, a San Diego woman is still waiting for answers from the hospital that cared for him.Trish Zdravecky says her husband Peter stayed at Select Specialty Hospital in Hillcrest for over three months due to kidney and diabetes complications. During that time, more than ,000 worth of his jewelry went missing. "I would like someone to return the stuff. I don't need the money. I'm good. But it would be nice to have the items that were on my husband when he went into the hospital," said Trish.Among the items missing: an ,000 Rolex, gold necklace, gold bracelet, and his UC San Diego class ring. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- October is HIV/AIDS Awareness month…this year we find ourselves still in the grips of a different public health crisis.We’re highlighting the work of an organization born in the 1980’s to help LGBTQ people with HIV and AIDS.Auntie Helen’s in North Park is now meeting needs from the pandemic.10News Anchor Mary McKenzie shares the legacy of a man well-known for taking care of his community – then and now.In the late 80's Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's -- in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988. He did fluff and fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS.Fear and stigma at the time -- hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease. But word spread quickly -- about Gary's services -- and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease... and more and more of Gary's friends and clients became sick... HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100 thousand lives in the U-S in the 1980's. Many of Gary's clients who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's. Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry -- and eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.Rod Legg is now the executive director of Auntie Helen's -- which has come through some difficult times. The laundry service and the thrift store are still co-located in North Park. During the pandemic, they stretched their services to do laundry for a new group -- that needed help.“We also do COVID-19, which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie into the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that.” explains Legg.They're also expanding the store, and their outreach. They give out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers. With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries - no questions asked, no referral needed. Rod found the food, and the volunteers delivered it. At one point, to more than 300 people.“This is everybody's HIV in a sense. Do you know what I mean? We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other.” says, Rod Legg.Auntie Helen's staffs a "warm" line instead of a hot line with volunteers -- taking calls from people struggling with mental health issues. They offer yoga, meditation -- virtually for now -- and provide clients with addiction support and help with job hunting. All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham...Rod Legg remarked, “This man was way before his time. You know? And can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes?”A hero for the community, then and now...That's what we all should be doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New data by an environmental foundation shows Mission Valley is seeing a surge in homeless.A study by the San Diego River Park Foundation says the number of homeless living along the river has nearly doubled since last October.In October of 2016, volunteers counted 56 homeless encampments along the San Diego River and in October of this year, they tallied 101."The numbers really were surprising," said SDRPF President Rob Hutsel, "an 80% increase is really a lot."San Diego Police Department made 270 arrests in homeless-related crimes in September. Hutsel says the new wave of homeless is likely from the city's crackdowns.The SDRPF has compiled data on the homeless encampments' locations and even the trash they produce. "93.7% of the trash (here) is sourced to homelessness," said Hutsel pointing to the map on his phone.In Orange County, law enforcement has established curfews on certain banks along of the Santa Ana River where they are experiencing a similar issue with transients.Councilman Scott Sherman's office says the city performs sweeps of the riverbed and curfews are a possibility once the area becomes more developed. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday arrested a suspect they say beat a 72-year-old man with a crowbar during a carjacking. Police say Daniel Dubois, 33, was arrested for the incident. According to police, the incident happened on the 5000 block of Kesling Street in Clairemont Mesa East around 9:47 a.m. Monday. Police say the 72-year-old drove up to his home only to find a man trying to break into his garage with a crowbar. RELATED: Robbers beat, rob 87-year-old Clairemont man during home invasion, police sayWhen the man tried to confront the suspect, police say the suspect attacked the 72-year-old with the crowbar before driving away with his Toyota Sienna. Police say the victim suffered major head injuries in the attack. The incident happened less than a week after an 87-year-old man was beaten by three men who broke into his Clairemont home. The victim in that attack says he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the suspects stormed in. 974
