JILIN, Jilin Province, July 29 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 barrels filled with chemicals have been swept into a major river in northeast China's Jilin Province, thousands more than originally thought, authorities said Thursday.Another 4,000 empty barrels have also entered the river, officials said at a press conference Thursday morning.On Wednesday, authorities said around 1,000 barrels had entered the Songhuajiang River in Jilin City.Barrels were spotted in the river Wednesday, but it is not known when they entered the waterway.The barrels first entered the Wende River and then flowed into the Songhuajiang River, after floods hit the storage facilities of two chemical factories -- Jilin Xinyaqiang Biochem Co. Ltd. and Jilin Zhongxin Group.Each chemical-filled barrel contains about 170 kilograms of chemicals.Of the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels, about 2,500 barrels contain trimethyl chloro silicane -- a colorless flammable liquid with a pungent odor -- while 500 contain hexamethyl disilazane -- a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Officials said emergency workers and soldiers are rushing to retrieve the barrels. Workers are collecting the barrels at eight points on the river. About 400 have been recovered so far.Seven stations have been established to monitor water contamination.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev discussed disasters and bilateral relations during a telephone conversation Tuesday.Medvedev conveyed his heartfelt condolences to China over its worst mudslides in decades and the great loss of life and property, expressing belief the Chinese government and people would overcome all difficulties and prevail over the disaster.He hoped the people injured would make a quick recovery and the mudslides-hit area would rebuild soon, noting that Russia was willing to provide assistance and support for China.Hu said the Chinese government had reacted immediately to the disaster in Zhouqu County of China's Gansu Province and was fully focused on the rescue and relief operations.Safeguarding the safety of civilians was the Chinese government's top priority and it had tried its best to rescue the people stricken by the Aug. 8 mudslides, which have left 1,254 people killed and 490 others missing so far, he said.Currently, relocation of the people affected, rescue and treatment of the injured, epidemic prevention, and reconstruction of infrastructure were underway in an urgent but orderly manner, he said.Hu also expressed China's appreciation of the Russian government and people after President Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had been quick to send their condolences and offered help, respectively.China was also greatly concerned by Russia's deadly wildfires and identified with Russia over its great loss of life and property, said the Chinese president, adding that China had offered assistance.Under the staunch leadership of the Russian government, the Russian people did their best to fight the wildfire and effectively safeguarded the safety of its people and property, said Hu, who once again sent condolences to Russia on behalf of the Chinese government and people.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a rainstorm alert Wednesday as heavy rains were expected to pound the flood-affected southern provinces.Most regions in south China, including provinces of Guizhou, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and the flood-hit Fujian, Hunan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, would experience heavy rain or rainstorms between 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday (Beijing time), the NMC said.Rainstorms were forecast for south China also during the next three days, while regions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north, and northeastern China would also experience rainfalls, it said.The observatory warned local authorities in south China, especially in the flood-battered regions, to get prepared for possible floods and geological disasters.In Fujian, heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, which engulfed two vehicles in Nanping City and left at least six people dead as of Tuesday.China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has dispatched work teams to the southern provinces of Hunan, Fujian and Guangxi and to Xinjiang after heavy rains hit the regions.

HONG KONG, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Air China, China's leading carrier listed in Hong Kong, said late Friday that it would pay 1. 3 98 billion U.S. dollars to buy 20 Boeing 737-800 planes.In a statement filed to the HK stock exchange, the carrier said the cost would be "payable by cash in installments" and it would " take delivery of the Boeing Aircraft in stages from 2013 to 2015"."The aircraft price is subject to price escalation by applying a formula. HAIKOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China is bracing for a strong tropical storm named "Mindelle", which is expected to skim the southernmost island province of Hainan between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.At 8 a.m. Monday, a tropical low pressure system across the South China Sea intensified into the fifth tropical storm of the year, after being upgraded to a strong tropical storm eight hours later.The storm, by the name of "Mindellu", which means dandelion in Korean, is expected to approach the Beibu Gulf off the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after skipping Hainan, the Hainan provincial meteorological bureau said.Local authorities in Hainan have halted railway, shipping services and tourism programs and called fishing boats to return to ports as they braced for the storm.Both cargo and passenger shipping services were halted at 5 p.m., according to the ban issued by the provincial maritime affairs bureau.Also, passenger and cargo train services through Qiongzhou strait between the mainland and Hainan were halted at 5 p.m.Meanwhile, more than 26,000 fishing boats have returned to their ports.Tourism activities, such as diving and water-motorbike-driving in Sanya, the famous tourist city in southern Hannan, have also been halted as residents prepared for the storm.The Hainan provincial government said they would spare no efforts in protecting the safety of fishermen and tourists, as well as strengthening the monitoring of reservoirs.
