While the vast majority of us only get to vote for one candidate on the ballot, voters in Maine are allowed to vote for multiple candidates.Maine's unique election process was approved by voters in 2016. Although this might sound like a strange way of voting, the process allows for “instant runoffs.” Election officials continually eliminate the last-place candidate until there are only two candidates left or a candidate receives a majority of the vote.For instance, if your first choice is eliminated, your second choice becomes your vote until that candidate is eliminated or is declared the winner.On Tuesday, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled against a GOP-led initiative that attempted to delay the use of ranked choice voting in the presidential election. The court struck down a lower-court ruling.The process had already been used in the primary and the 2018 midterm. Governor Paul LePage protested the results from the 2018 election, and threatened not to certify the results. In Maine’s House District 2, Democrat Jared Golden won the election despite not receiving a plurality of first-choice votes. Golden ended up garnering a majority after two independent candidates were eliminated.Maine is also unique as it is only one of two US states that divvy up Electoral College votes based on congressional districts. While the winner of Maine’s statewide vote automatically garners two Electoral College votes, the state’s other two votes are given to the candidate who wins within a congressional district.In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state’s overall vote, but failed to win both of the state’s congressional districts, which resulted in Donald Trump taking one of the state’s four Electoral College votes.For this year’s election, while the Maine’s first congressional district is expected to lead Joe Biden to a statewide victory, the second district is expected to be a tight race. 1915

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The hurricane season continues to be active with the formation of a new tropical storm and a depression in the last 12 hours.Tropical depression 17 formed Sunday night in the Atlantic and became Tropical Storm Paulette just before 11 a.m. Monday.The storm has 40 mph winds with higher gusts and is moving west, northwest at 3 mph.Paulette is the earliest forming 16th named storm on record, breaking an old record set by Philippe on September 17, 2005, according to hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach.A slow-motion toward the northwest or north-northwest is expected tonight. Paulette is then forecast to move a little faster and generally westward on Tuesday and Wednesday.Early indications are it may curve before it reaches the Bahamas, but we will keep an eye on it just in case. It may interact with tropical depression 18, located behind it, which also formed Monday morning.Paulette's path and/or intensity might change because of its proximity to tropical depression 18. 1009

WEST SENECA, N.Y. — Prosecutors have charged a West Seneca man with criminally negligent homicide after a dispute over wearing a face covering left an 80-year-old man dead.Donald Lewinski, 65, of West Seneca, was taken into custody Monday following an incident on Sept. 26 at Pamp's Red Zone Bar and Grill.According to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, Lewinski got into a verbal confrontation with Rocco Sapienza — another regular at the bar — after Sapienza noticed Lewinski was not wearing a mask while bringing buckets of beer to a band playing outside.At one point, prosecutors said Sapienza got up and confronted Lewinski. That's when Lewinski stood up and pushed Sapienza "hard" with both hands, the D.A. said. Sapienza fell back and hit his head on the ground.Sapienza was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was unresponsive for four days. He died on Sept. 30.The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head."We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Rocco. He was a part of our Red Zone family and loved by all," the owner of Pamp's Red Zone released said in a statement. With COVID-19 cases spiking across the country once again, Starbucks is bringing back a program that offers free coffee to health care professionals and other essential workers.For the entire month of December, Starbucks is offering a free tall coffee to "any customer who identifies as a front-line responder." Scroll down to see a full list of eligible customers.Starbucks offered the same promotion in March and April, when the coronavirus first spread exploded throughout the U.S. Now, with cases spiking across the country — and expected to increase further ahead of the holidays — Starbucks is bringing the promotion back.Eligible customers can get a free tall hot or iced coffee at "company-operated locations and select licensed stores" now through Dec. 31.Starbucks is also making a 0,000 donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness to support essential workers who may face mental health hurdles following the new rise in cases. However, this is still historically high and there are concerns it does not include people who have given up looking for work during a pandemic for various reasons.Racism and social justice issues divided the country earlier this year, leading to large demonstrations in dozens of cities. Strong emotions from both sides motivated some voters. Biden has said he also wants to focus on rejoining international organizations, including the World Health Organization, NATO, and the Paris Climate Accord. Biden has also signaled other top priorities in his first few months; including sending a bill to Congress to repeal liability protections for gun manufacturers and closing background-check loopholes, sending an immigration bill to Congress creating a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants and retaining rights for “dreamers” who were brought to the United States illegally as children, and move to eliminate tax cuts passed under Trump in 2017, according to the Washington Post.
