ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV)-- Dozens of people joined a paddle-out for the late "godfather of snowboarding" Saturday. Many thanked Jake Burton Carpenter for his legendary contribution to snowboarding. Surfers hit the waves at Swami's Surf Spot to honor a man they said changed their lives. But Jay Saling brought his other favorite board. "Two things I love most in this in the world are snowboarding and surfing, and he helped created both of those," Saling said.Saling organized the paddle-out shortly after the announcement of snowboard legend Jake Burton Carpenter's death on Wednesday. Saling carried a Burton snowboard into the waves and placed it on top of his surfboard as he paddled out.Burton is credited for reinventing the sport and culture of snowboarding. Friends and former Burton Snowboards employees now living in San Diego shared their memories with Carpenter. "At my interview, his first question was, 'Do you snowboard?' And I actually lied to him. I said, 'I did.' I was a skier. And then from that moment when he hired me, I never skied ever since, so I owe my life to Jake," former employee Mike Hoefer said. Many who knew Carpenter said he was a man who thought outside of the box. Not quite turning things upside down, just sideways."You could get on the mountain, but he turned everything sideways and just made everything more fun," surfer and snowboarder Chris Dodds said. It was so much fun that snowboarding became an Olympic sport in 1998. San Diego-born Olympian Shaun White's parents joined in the paddle-out Saturday. Their son paid his respects on Instagram, sharing a photo of the embrace he shared with Carpenter after his gold medal win in Pyeongchang.From Olympians to recreational boarders, Jake Burton Carpenter's impact on snowboarding will live on forever."His passion really created this world for us that we all share, and now we all have in common," former Burton employee Jenny Sehic said. Experts warned that a drop in air pollution from COVID-19 lockdowns would eventually come back as cars returned to the roads and businesses opened up. A study looking at air quality during the pandemic finds while the visible smog may have lifted in some areas, the air pollutants never really went away."It has been assumed that fewer cars on the road might have led to a decline in the level of air pollution outdoors and, in turn, reduce the number of cases of ill health linked to this pollution. However, our study -- contrary to research from places such as Wuhan in China, and Milan -- found no evidence of fine particulate air pollution declining in Scotland because of lockdown,” stated Dr. Ruaraidh Dobson, who led the study at the University of Stirling.Dr. Dobson and his group looked at the amount of fine particulate air pollution (referred to as PM2.5) in the first month of lockdown restrictions in Scotland. There was a 65 percent reduction in the number of vehicles on the roads, however there was little change in the levels of particulates.Looking at particles in the air between mid-March and mi-April of this year, then comparing that data to the same time period over the last few years, the researchers found little change in the amount of air pollution. They did notice a drop in nitrogen dioxide in 2020 samples, a compound specifically linked to car emissions.The team suggests traffic is not a key contributor to outdoor air pollution, and people may possibly be at greater risk of air pollution in their own homes from smoking and cooking appliances in small, enclosed, and poorly ventilated homes.“This could increase adverse health effects overall and also health inequalities – lower income people are more likely to smoke and to smoke indoors, and are likely to have smaller homes leading to higher PM2.5 concentrations from individual sources, due to smaller room volumes,” the study notes.The researchers express concern that if the severity of COVID-19 is related to air pollution exposure and respiratory issues, increased exposure to all sources of air pollution could increase the risk of serious complications from the disease. 2175

Eleven people fell ill after a suspicious letter was opened in an administrative building at Joint Base Fort Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia, on Tuesday, according to the Arlington County Fire Department.Of the 11 individuals who felt ill, three were transported to a local hospital and are in a stable condition, a spokesperson for the department said."An envelope containing an unknown substance was received, today, aboard Joint Base Ft.Myer-Henderson Hall. Personnel in the affected building took immediate preventative measures by evacuating the building," according to Maj. Brian Block, a US Marine Corps spokesperson."Base officials and are coordinating with local HAZMAT teams and FBI. Several Marines are receiving medical care as a result of this incident. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Four residents were displaced Tuesday when a fire broke out in the garage and damaged part of their Fallbrook home, authorities said.The blaze was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Pomegranate Lane, off South Stage Coach Lane north of Fallbrook High School, according to North County Fire Protection District spokesman John Choi.Firefighters from the Oceanside and Camp Pendleton fire departments responded to the scene along with Cal Fire San Diego personnel to help douse the blaze, which fully engulfed the garage and extended into portions of the home and the attic, Choi said.Crews knocked down the flames within 35 minutes, but the fire caused extensive damage to the garage and minimal damage to the home, he said.No injuries were reported.The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents -- four adults and one pet -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 989
