As COVID-19 cases continue to climb across Arizona, so too are the number of people lost to the novel coronavirus. Many Arizonans wonder if the state reopened too soon.From the moment casinos across the state opened their doors, thousands lined up to get through them. Now, the family of an employee at The Lone Butte Gila River Casino says reopening cost their father his life."It feels like a bad dream that I want to wake up from, but I can't," said Shawne Jackson, fighting through tears.Jackson is mourning the loss of her father, Robert Washington Jr. The patriarch of their family and her hero. The pain they feel now has influenced them to take a stand."I don't believe he was comfortable returning to work. He was very concerned," said Jackson.Washington was 68, a diabetic and had just recently beat prostate cancer.In May, when casinos were given the green light to open by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Washington, a security guard for Gila River Casino Lone Butte in Chandler, was called back to work."He was tested prior to going back, and from what I understand, he tested negative," said Jackson.She says her father had a strong work ethic and financially needed to return to work. As someone with preexisting conditions, his family says he was told he could drive a golf cart around the perimeter of the casino and have limited interaction with customers. Still, they say he was posted at the door instead. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 five days later. Symptoms began appearing shortly after. He was hospitalized and later died on June 11.His relatives aren't the only ones to come forward regarding the safety inside Gila River casinos.KNXV has received multiple emails from other employees saying people continue to get sick and managers are keeping others in the dark regarding positive tests.Pointing out a cavalier attitude towards masks by customers, Jackson believes that starts at the top with the governor."They're looking to you to lead by example, and when you tell them that it's okay to not mask up, that's sad, that's a tragedy because you're putting innocent people in harm's way," said Jackson.However, just last Thursday, Gov. Ducey publicly said masks should be worn if social distancing is a problem, but did not mandate the use of them.Gila River instituted several precautions before opening, saying they would only operate at 50% capacity, provide masks and install Plexiglas barriers near slot machines. Jackson says she doesn't believe it's been strenuously enforced. An Ohio couple was stunned to find a Nazi symbol on a pizza they picked up from Little Caesars Pizza Saturday night.Jason Laska was running an errand for his wife and picked up a pizza from the Little Caesars in Brook Park.“I walked in. I said, ‘What do you guys have left?’ And they said a pepperoni and a cheese and I said ‘give me the pepperoni,’” Laska said.He told WEWS he paid for the grab-and-go pizza but didn’t look inside the box until he got home, but his wife said she was disgusted to find pepperonis carefully arranged in the shape of a backward swastika. An American woman and a Japanese man won the elite divisions in the Boston Marathon Monday, the first time runners from each country have taken the top spots in more than 30 years.Desiree (Desi) Linden, a two-time Olympian, battled the rain and wind to win the 122nd running of the storied race. It's also the first marathon win of the 34-year-old's career."I love this city," Linden said. "I love this race, this course. It's storybook, so I'm thrilled to be here and to get it done."And Yuki Kawauchi of Japan came in first place in the men's elite division, overtaking Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya in the final miles. "I told her in the race, I said, 'You know, if there's anything I can do to help you out, let me know because I might just drop out. When you work together, you never know what's going to happen. As calls for police reform permeate among supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Fraternal Order of Police announced on Friday it has endorsed Donald Trump for president.The FOP, which is the nation’s largest police union with 355,000 members, endorsed Trump for the second time. The union has not endorsed a Democrat for president since 1996. The FOP endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 and 2004, John McCain in 2008, and did not issue a formal endorsement in 2012.“During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said. “Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. President Trump is committed to keeping our communities and families safe.”While Democratic nominee Joe Biden did not win over the support of the FOP, the Biden campaign responded on Friday by announcing it has garnered support from 190 law enforcement officials throughout the US.The list distributed by the Biden campaign includes current and former sheriffs, prosecutors and attorneys general.“Joe Biden has always stood on the right side of the law and is offering a much needed vision for our Nation.
