(CNN) -- A farmer in Nebraska was just trying to transfer some corn from one place to another when he accidentally stepped into a hole, the hole happened to be a grain auger.Kurtis Kaser, 63, knew he had to act quick as his leg was getting pulled into the machine."I didn't know what to do and I didn't know how long I would keep my consciousness either, I about gave up but then I remembered I had my pocket knife," Kaser told CNN.Kaser was at the farm by himself in Pender, located near the Iowa border, about three and a half weeks ago, when he had to make the split decision to cut off his leg."I didn't have a phone on me, I didn't know where it had gone, so I just started cutting with the knife," he said. "I knew I was done cutting because I felt a funny feeling, maybe it was a tendon I cut."The farmer said shortly after, he proceeded to crawl towards his house using his elbows so he could reach a phone to call for help."I stopped for a little bit but I didn't want to stop for long in case I passed out, there was no way for me to get help, everyone was gone at the time, I just did what I had to do and they (first responders) got me in a helicopter," he said.He was rushed to Bryan Medical Center and stayed there for about a week before transferring to Madonna Rehabilitation Center, where he underwent physical therapy."I was 45 minutes away from home when this happened, they were flying him away as I was arriving and I didn't get to see how he was doing before that," his wife, Lori, told CNN. "I am just glad he's here with us."This isn't the first time Kaser has had a scare like this on the farm."These accidents happen all the time, when I was a sixth grader my other leg got stuck in a tractor, only my skin suffered that time," he said. "We're kind of used to this around here."Kaser said he doesn't remember how long the whole ordeal lasted but when he returned home from the rehabilitation hospital on Friday, he was shocked to realize how far he had crawled."Everyone asks me why I am so calm about the situation and the truth is, when I was in Madonna (the rehabilitation hospital), I saw so many people who will probably never be able to walk again and I know I will be able to walk mildly normal, I'm fortunate."His wife said they are now adjusting to the new lifestyle and within time they know everything will be back to normal. Once his leg is finished healing, he'll be fitted for a prosthetic and Kaser told CNN affiliate KETV that he'll be back to farming in no time. 2513

"Mr. Latson made a grave error in judgment in the verbiage he wrote... In addition to being offensive, the principal's statement is not supported by either the School District Administration or the School Board." 220

SAN MARCOS, Calif (KGTV) - A North County military veteran and Cal State San Marcos student is spearheading an effort to expand a veterans remembrance wall in San Marcos. The wall stands at Helen Bougher Memorial Park, and it was funded and put up by a veterans group in 2009, but spots filled-up close after about two years. The open spaces left on the wall now are reserved for POWs and those KIA or MIA. "Unfortunately, I was the one that had to tell all the veterans and their families that there was no room left on the wall, which was unacceptable," said Heidi Rassat, a co-founder for the remembrance wall. Jason Beyer said he believes he was the last to purchase a tile before requests were capped. Now, the ex-Marine is on a mission to add more spaces to the wall. "I think about my co-workers who have passed away, and doing this project keeps their memory alive for me," Beyer said, adding veterans should have the opportunity to be remembered. "They should have this space for their loved ones to remember them, to remember their service, remember their sacrifice," he said. Beyer started a group called the San Marcos Veterans Memorial Initiative. Beyer is also a student at CSU San Marcos, and he has gotten art students involved in designing a way to free up or add spaces to the existing wall. They hope to give design concepts to the city and hopefully begin fundraising next year. "The City of San Marcos is proud to honor our veterans, and we look forward to considering potential proposals for enhancing the memorial," said City Manager Jack Griffin. "(During) my time overseas, never did I think I would be part of such an important project," Beyer said. 1693

"Ghosting" — The term is usually reserved in online dating when a prospective date doesn't call or text back. Now, it's being used on prospective employers when new hires don't show up for their first day of work.Liz Blondy has roughly 80 employees covering her various K-9 to 5 pet care locations and says she's fallen victim to a trend of ghosting. "It's strange because it’s like where did they go?" Blondy said.Experts say part of the reason for the sudden disappearing act is actually good news: a stronger economy. "There’s more jobs for people so they have more options, they have more choices," Blondy said. However, the toll the trend takes on those who get ghosted is more than just the equivalent of an emotional rollercoaster. "A lot of these candidates we get really excited about, so to have them not show up can be disappointing and also expensive," Blondy said. "We start with the group interview, we have them come back to do a work assessment. the HR person spends time creating a schedule, the onboarding…we’ve already spent a couple of hundred dollars before they even walk in the door their first day." 1166
