SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said. The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl. The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "CBP officers at all of our nation’s legal border crossings remain on the job and vigilant during these unprecedented times." 1174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Baseball is back, and that could mean potentially good news for businesses near Petco Park in downtown San Diego. On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced a 60-game season will begin on July 23 and 24. Players are expected to return for training camps on July 1.While the MLB announcement did not specify the role of fans, multiple reports suggest the season will begin in empty ballparks with no fans in attendance. To reduce travel, the schedule will include 10 games for each team against its divisional opponents, along with 20 games against the opposite leagues corresponding geographical division. For the San Diego Padres, that will mean 10 games each against the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. The Padres will also play teams from the American League West."Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon," MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a news release. "We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again.Businesses near Petco Park welcomed the news.Brant Crenshaw, co-owner of the sports bar Social Tap, which is located next to the ballpark, said the pandemic has hurt business. He is hopeful that the return of baseball will lead the way for more sports to return. He said it could help bring some customers back, especially if fans aren't yet allowed back into the ballparks."The only way you're going to be able to watch these games is on TV, and you can come down here and watch every game," Crenshaw said. "It's a one-stop-shop, so if you're a fan of teams out of state, we'll have them playing. So, I think it will help to get some sports back on TV.” 1783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County officials will challenge a ruling that allows local strip clubs to operate while several other businesses are closed or limited under California's new stay-at-home order.San Diego County's Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 in a closed session on Tuesday, with Supervisors Kristen Gaspar and Jim Desmond voting no, to appeal any "adverse ruling" to a hearing over whether to allow strip clubs to remain open. The businesses sued to county and state in October over COVID-19 restrictions that forced them to close indoor operations. A judge issued a preliminary injunction on Nov. 6 that protects the businesses from any enforcement, though the businesses must comply with rules surrounding a 10 p.m. curfew and close early.RELATED: State says San Diego County playgrounds can remain open during stay-at-home orderSupervisor Nathan Fletcher said on Wednesday that the board will have a hearing before a judge. If the judge keeps the injunction in place, the board will appeal.Fletcher said the majority of the board doesn't view strip clubs as essential and "felt that was consistent with common sense." He added that they violate the state's order that bans people of different households from gathering."I’m guessing most folks aren’t going there with all the members of their household, so you have multiple households interacting together in a high-risk setting and so we ordered them closed," Fletcher said.RELATED: Outdoor gyms, parks remain open under California's new regional stay-at-home orderCalifornia's new regional stay-at-home has forced county restaurants to close indoor and outdoor dining, salons and personal care services to shutter, and places of worship to move outdoors as coronavirus cases surge and threaten ICU capacity in several regions, including San Diego County. After the county fell into the state's purple tier restrictions that closed indoor operations for many businesses in November, an attorney representing Pacers adult entertainment club told ABC 10News that adult entertainment is a protected form of expression and should be protected as a first amendment right. The Associated Press reported that the strip clubs say they are keeping dancers six feet or more apart and requiring everyone to wear a face covering. Steve Hoffman, the attorney for Cheetahs Gentleman's Club, told the AP that the business consulted with experts who said there's no evidence of increased risk to COVID-19 if dancing is allowed. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 2523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children's minds cam become overwhelmed during the chaos of a pandemic. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? A lot of kids are really struggling with getting through a paragraph or a sentence."Lee also says Brain Balance is by no means a cure, just a stepping stone to help children with their struggles."We know there are these road blocks in the brain. So we help them clear those road blocks, and to help them truly thrive, especially in the new school year." 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County public health officials say the first shipment of a potential coronavirus vaccine from drug company Pfizer will only cover about 70% of the first group of recipients identified in Phase 1.The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that Phase 1A of vaccine distribution covers health care workers, and residents and workers of nursing homes and long-term care facilities:On top of that distribution structure, ACIP also split Phase 1A into three tiers to prioritize which groups of health care workers will receive a vaccine first:Tier 1:Acute care, psychiatric, and correction facility hospitalsSkilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and similar settings for older or medically vulnerable individualsInclude residents in these settings as recommended for Phase 1A and ACIPParamedics, EMTs, and others providing emergency medical servicesDialysis centersTier 2:Intermediate care, for persons who need non-continuous nursing supervision, and supportive careHome health care and in-home supportive servicesCommunity health workers, including promotorasPublic health field staffPrimary care clinics, including Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Centers, correctional facility clinics, and urgent care clinicsTier 3:Other setting and health care workings, including specialty clinics, laboratory workers, dental/oral health clinics, pharmacy staff not working in settings at higher tiersAccording to San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county will only receive enough doses to cover about 70% of one group in the first tier of Phase 1A."We are not even getting enough doses for that first dot point in tier one," Wooten said, referring to acute care, psychiatric, and correction facility hospitals. "We are basically getting just over 70%."RELATED: What the FDA's review reveals about Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccineSan Diego County is expected to receive 28,275 doses of California's first allocation of 327,000 vaccine doses in mid-December. Wooten said there is about 39,000 personnel in the acute care hospital section alone."We anticipate that sometime next week, early next week, if not, on the weekend even, that we will get vaccines," Wooten said. She added that those first vaccines will be distributed to three "prepositioned locations" in the county. 2369
