VISTA, Calif. – A man was arrested Monday after authorities say he stabbed his wife and daughter inside their Vista home. The incident happened Sunday night just before 8 p.m. on the 1000 block of Corvalla Drive.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, during a fight with his wife and daughter, 55-year-old Juventino Vazquez grabbed a knife from a closet.Following a struggle, Vazquez reportedly stabbed both his wife and daughter several times before leaving the home.Both victims were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Vazquez was arrested Monday afternoon after a witness reported a suspicious person on the 900 block of Barsby Street.He was booked into jail for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and violating a domestic violence restraining order with injuries. 831

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Juneteenth holiday is far from new. It’s been celebrated by African Americans in the country for years.“I actually didn’t learn about that until I was an adult, just in general conversation speaking with other people,” said Erica Parham.Parham is a product of the Hampton school division in Virginia Beach area.“I wasn’t taught that in school at all,” she adds.She wants to see change. Her boys, Jaxon and Sebastian, go to Kempsville Elementary School in Virginia Beach.“They knew about Fourth of July in day care,” but they were never taught about the day in 1865 when African American slaves found out they were free."I do believe that large parts of the Virginia Department of Education curriculum are inadequate to really tell the story of slavery and racism in Virginia,” said Brian Teucke.Teucke is an 8th grade civics teacher at Page Middle School and also the president of the Gloucester Education Association."There are huge gaps in our curriculum that need to be addressed, and [they] can be by enhancing the curriculum,” he adds.The Department of Education says new history textbooks and curriculum must correspond with the standards of learning, and revising the SOLs takes about two years, meaning it will take some time before Juneteenth makes it inside textbooks.The department encourages teachers to use online resources in the classroom. WASHINGTON — A member of the White House coronavirus task force says the increase in U.S. cases isn’t just because of more testing.Admiral Brett Giroir of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. says the proof of the increase is the uptick in hospitalizations and deaths nationwide from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.Cases of the virus are spiking across the country, particularly across the upper Midwest. Last week, the U.S. recorded two days of record increases of new COVID-19 cases.President Donald Trump has been saying the U.S. is “rounding the turn” on the pandemic. The president also contends the news media are spending too much time focusing on the health crisis.However, a model by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington — a model routinely cited by the White House — notes that hospital resource use has risen steadily in recent weeks and is projected to spike in the coming days.Giroir, who was put in charge of coronavirus testing by Trump, says the nation is at “another critical point” in the response to the pandemic.He is urging people to keep wearing masks, wash their hands and practice social distancing. (KGTV) - The parents of a two-year-old boy say they're still reliving the terrifying experience they faced in a store parking lot over the weekend.Peter Kopcak and his fiance Jennifer Lawson were backing out of the Costco parking lot on Hacienda Drive in Vista Saturday afternoon."I just seen out of the corner of my eye this guy running down between the two cars, and I didn't know what he was doing," said Kopcak.The couple said the guy tried to rip their toddler out of his car seat."He opened the car seat back door, reached in and grabbed my kid, she jumped out of the car, left it in reverse, I put it in park. I jumped out, he was trying to grab the carseat and, she pushed him and I just had to take him down," said Kopcak.Kopcak tackled the man to the ground."I took him to the ground and did what I had to do to subdue him, a bunch of people, an off duty officer pulled me off the guy and held him down told him to put his hands behind his back," said Kopcak.Sheriff's deputies arrested 37-year-old Adam Glavinic. He's facing charges of felony attempted kidnapping and being under the influence of a controlled substance."I thought he was going to take my kid and I wasn't about to let that happen, I'd do anything I could to stop him cause that's the worst nightmare, just having someone A, touch your kid, B, try to take your kid," said Kopcak.The couple was also upset to learn Glavinic was released from jail on a 0,000 bail Sunday."I couldn't stop crying when I found out, cause he will do this to someone else and who knows if it's a single mom or the husband isn't quick enough, and the guy takes off," said Lawson."I don't understand how he got out so fast. What if he tries to grab another kid or hurt someone else? It boggles my mind," said Kopcak.There's a backlog of out of custody cases due to the pandemic. WASHINGTON — The federal government has restored access to Trusted Traveler Programs for New York state residents, the Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday.New Yorkers were banned from enrolling or re-enrolling in Global Entry and several other Trusted Traveler Programs in February in response to New York's "Green Light Law." The law allowed undocumented citizens the ability to get drivers' licenses and restricted federal immigration agencies from accessing Department of Motor Vehicle data.Trusted Traveler Programs affected included Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS and FAST, which facilitate the entry of pre-approved travelers into the U.S. using expedited lanes at airports and international borders. The ban did not affect the domestic TSA Pre-check.The statement from DHS released Thursday said the department will lift its ban on TTPs for New York residents because Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state legislators amended the law, allowing for the sharing of DMV records “as necessary for an individual seeking acceptance into a trusted traveler program, or to facilitate vehicle imports and/or exports,” according to DHS.The statement said New York continues to restrict sharing DMV records and information with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and ICE "for other enforcement efforts."DHS said it is working with the Department of Justice to take further legal action against New York over those restrictions, as well as new criminal penalties for sharing info with CBP and ICE.“We appreciate the information sharing to CBP for the trusted travel program, which enables DHS to move forward and begin once again processing New York residents under the Trusted Travel Program," Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement. "Nonetheless, local New York law continues to maintain provisions that undermine the security of the American people and purport to criminalize information sharing between law enforcement entities."Cuomo said Thursday the change to the law's verbiage was made back in April."After the Department of Homeland Security announced the ban on the Trusted Traveler Program for New York residents in February, I immediately met with President Trump at the White House to discuss what — to the extent that there were bonafide concerns — needed to be done to address the issue while still protecting the privacy of all New Yorkers. Subsequently the matter was dealt with in the state budget passed in April," Cuomo said.
