HARRISON, Ohio -- A dad used heroin in a gas station parking lot while his 2-year-old daughter sat in the backseat, according to a police affidavit. The father then resisted arrest and had to be subdued with a stun gun, police said.Brenton Sturgill, 37, of Harrison, had two hypodermic needles -- one “still loaded with heroin” -- when he was arrested Saturday at the BP station at 9055 Dry Fork Road, according to the affidavit.Sturgill resisted arrest, leading to a “physical altercation,” according to the arresting officer. He has been charged with using illegal drugs, endangering children and resisting arrest. He appeared in court Monday morning. 686
Hazards created by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano have spawned a lot of questions from the public. How long will this last? Is it safe to be on Big Island right now? Can I roast marshmallows?The US Geological Survey has been answering those questions on social media. Here's a look at some of them. The questions have been edited for clarity and brevity.Q: Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?USGS: Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!) If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 [sulfur dioxide] or H2S [hydrogen sulfide], they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction.Q: Is it safe to be in Hawaii right now?USGS: The eruption at Kilauea right now is impacting a small portion of the Big Island. Lava flows are active on the eastern tip of the island, in lower Puna, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed due to the small explosions occurring at Kilauea's summit. But the Island of Hawaii is made up of 5 volcanoes, and only Kilauea is erupting.Even if there were to be a change in activity at Kilauea, it would not impact Hilo or Kailua-Kona (the largest towns on the island), which are located on different volcanoes. The biggest impacts might be vog, but that has been a persistent issue on the island for decades. From 2000 through 2018, 459 children have died from accidental furniture tip overs, which are preventable fatalities that can be stopped by anchoring furniture to a wall.In response, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission is launching a public service announcement campaign called "Even When You're Watching.” The campaign will show the dangers of leaving furniture unanchored. The campaign includes “terrifying” footage of tip overs caught on video.In addition to the number of fatalities, the CPSC estimates that every 43 minutes, a child is injured by furniture tipping over."Even when adults are in the same room with children, dangerous tip-overs can occur," said CPSC acting chairman Robert Adler. "Many parents and caregivers do not know about this hidden hazard, or believe that they can prevent a tip-over by watching their children, but these incidents still happen. We urge adults to Anchor It! and to tell their friends and family to do so, too, because these tragic tip-overs can happen in the blink of an eye."According to a CPSC survey, 80 percent are aware that furniture can tip over, but just 47 percent say they have their TV anchors, and 55 percent say they have anchored furniture in their home.The CSPC offers parents the following tips:To protect children from a tip-over incident, follow these safety tips in any home where children live or visit:Anchor TVs and furniture, such as bookcases and dressers, securely to the wall.Always place TVs on a sturdy, low base, and push the TV back as far as possible, particularly if anchoring is not possible.Avoid displaying or storing items, such as toys and remotes, in places where kids might be tempted to climb up to reach for them.Store heavier items on lower shelves, or in lower drawers.If purchasing a new TV, consider recycling older ones not currently in use. HINTON, W.V. – Wild and wonderful, the natural beauty of West Virginia can’t be questioned.But the people who live there have seen better days. Sean Phelps sees it all the time.“Bunch of friends from high school that are in prison for drugs, or they (overdosed) from drugs or committed suicide because of drugs. It’s a lot worse here than people think,” said Phelps who lives in the state.The opioid crisis has hit West Virginia as hard as any other state in the country. Combine that with nearly 80,000 coal jobs lost since 1990 and things have been a little bleak.“I had some friends in the coal mines. When the coal mines shut down, they’re not as well off now, that is for sure. Bunch of them are struggling really bad,” he said.But things are buzzing at Appalachian Beekeeping Collective.“Bee keeping integrates everything in our environment and it’s such a heart and mind thing. Like I was saying earlier, people are rooting for honeybees. They’re worried about honeybees and we want to give them tools to really help them in a concrete way,” said Kevin Johnson with the collective.The group is cracking open honeycomb and harvesting sweet, sticky, honey.“It’s a sticky job,” said Robbie Gardisky, who works at the collective harvesting honey.Phelps used to be an EMT and janitor. Gardisky was doing landscaping. Michael Beckner worked in IT.“Not a lot of people that work a job say they love their job. Everybody that works here, loves their job,” said Phelps.They’re all on a second career of sorts. The goal of the collective is to create economic opportunities for rural families in the state. They teach people the skills and give them the materials to keep their own bees.“Our work, even though it’s focused on bees, it’s about working with people,” said Johnson.Johnson is one of the people who mentors prospective beekeepers. Passing on his knowledge is one of his favorite parts of his job.“We have a 12-year-old who is the youngest apprentice beekeeper in West Virginia. We also have an 83-year-old beekeeper. We’ve got people who live on large cattle farms, people who live on small lots in hollers. And all of those are great places for bees,” he said.The collective has taught and distributed bee boxes to hundreds of West Virginians. They also harvest the sweet nectar for their participants and pay them for it.It’s really all in an effort to help rebuild some of the people in this state the world seems to have forgotten and connect them with the amazing natural resources this state has to offer.“I think the people of West Virginia are perhaps its most underappreciated resource, but its most valuable,” said Johnson. 2650
HAYWARD, California (AP) — Robots that can flip burgers, make salads, and even bake bread are in growing demand as virus-wary kitchens try to put some distance between workers and customers. Starting this fall, the White Castle burger chain will test a robot arm that can cook french fries, corn dogs. The robot, dubbed Flippy, is made by Pasadena, California-based Miso Robotics. In June, Flippy began working full-day shifts - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at CaliBurger in Pasadena.“We have demonstrated that Flippy can work on our standard equipment and meet high volume demand with substantially greater cooking consistency than our kitchens that have not yet installed Flippy,” said Tony Lomelino, Chief Technology Officer of CaliBurger in a press release. “Additionally, we have developed a program to retrain our restaurant staff to serve as ‘Chef Techs’ that work alongside Flippy and monitor the related software and hardware systems. We expect these skills will be useful for employees across our chain to secure higher income jobs that require human/robotic interaction in the future restaurant industry and other industries.”Robot food service was a trend even before the coronavirus pandemic struck.
