SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reminded residents today to protect themselves against wild rodents after three deer mice were found carrying the potentially deadly hantavirus.Vector Control officials collected the mice in Boulevard during a regular monitoring exercise. Hantavirus occurrences in wild rodents are not uncommon in undeveloped areas of the county, but residents can avoid potentially infected rodents by keeping them out of areas like sheds, garages and homes.Vector Control officials also found five hantavirus-carrying mice in Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero in January.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain. Hantavirus infection is generally unlikely, though, because rodents tend to avoid humans and developed spaces.Residents are advised to use ``wet cleaning'' methods like a bleach solution spray or a sponge and a mop if they find rodent droppings or nests.Sweeping or vacuuming nests and droppings can send the virus into the air, raising the chance of infection. Vector Control officials also advise residents to double-bag and seal rodent debris before throwing it away.Residents can avoid hantavirus exposure by sealing holes that are larger than a dime in homes and adjacent spaces and quickly eliminating rodent debris and infestations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council received a handful of presentations Tuesday intended to help the city address homelessness as well as the lack of transitional and permanent affordable housing.Entities presenting to the council included the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, San Diego County, Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego State University's Institute for Public Health and the council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Representatives from each office discussed challenges and successes fighting homelessness in San Diego last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to discuss the reorganization of the county's fire protection and emergency medical services into two separate agencies at its July 7 meeting.The reorganization would allow more flexibility for, and accountability of, dependent fire and medical services in the county's unincorporated areas, Supervisor Jim Desmond said.One of the agencies would be the Fire Protection District, which would provide fire services to the jurisdictions within the current service area. The other would be the Fire Authority, which would continue focusing on public safety radio communications.The supervisors formed the San Diego County Fire Authority in 2008 and developed a plan to cover and consolidate 1.5 million acres. The authority is currently part of County Service Area 135, which provides the government structure to organize and fund fire protection and emergency medical services in the unincorporated area.Since the creation of the authority, the board has invested more than 0 million to boost fire and emergency services capabilities. Currently, the Fire Authority contracts with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to provide services. Collectively, the services are known as County Fire.According to a staff report, County Fire has more than doubled in size in the past five years. The proposed reorganization of the agency was proposed by Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who described its evolution as like a "baby" growing into an adult.If the board agrees to separate the two functions "to better meet current and future demands," using Jacob's recommendations, it would divest County Service Area 135 of its fire protection and emergency services powers and subsequently create the San Diego County Fire Protection District, which would be a committed county function. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Poway man accused of running a million dollar Ponzi scheme has pleaded guilty to grand theft and securities fraud. He is slated to be sentenced to a dozen years in state prison next month for orchestrating the scheme that scammed nearly 50 victims, the California Department of Insurance announced Wednesday.Team 10 first spoke to several alleged victims of Dougherty last year. They said he stole the money he was supposed to invest for them. Sheriff's investigators said he targeted the elderly planning for retirement. He offered victims investment opportunities in companies he owned, then used some of their funds for his personal expenses like home remodeling, travel and college tuition, according to officials.A spokesperson for the District Attorney's Office said 47-year-old Christopher Dougherty pleaded guilty to three counts of securities fraud, three counts of grand theft, and admitted to a white collar crime enhancement.Dougherty also used some of the victims' money to pay back other investors "in classic Ponzi fashion," according to the Department of Insurance.
