Two influential staffers at the Environmental Protection Agency are leaving the agency, CNN has learned.The security chief for EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and the leader of the agency's Superfund cleanup program are both departing, according to an internal email and an agency statement, respectively.The exits come just days after Pruitt's management of the agency, including substantial spending on his personal security, travel, and office, came under scrutiny at back-to-back congressional hearings.Pasquale "Nino" Perrotta, the special agent in charge of the Pruitt security detail, announced his departure in a one-sentence email to colleagues on Tuesday morning."It has been a tremendous honor to serve as a special agent for the past 23 years and I wish you all a safe journey ahead as you move forward in both your professional and personal lives," Perrotta wrote.The security team overseen by Perrotta, a former Secret Service agent, has ballooned under Pruitt. Expensive and elaborate practices, such as flying in first class airplane seats, have drawn the attention of watchdogs like the EPA's own inspector general.Rep. Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, has indicated the House Oversight Committee, which he chairs, is interested in interviewing Perrotta about Pruitt's security and travel. Perrotta's predecessor was pushed aside after refusing to drive Pruitt around Washington using police lights and siren, three sources familiar with the situation told CNN.The EPA has repeatedly defended the spending and security practices as necessary given an increased level of threats against Pruitt. But Senate Democrats say a whistleblower and internal documents cast doubt on the severity of the threats.The EPA did not respond to CNN's request for comment on Perrotta's departure.The other staffer leaving the EPA is Albert "Kell" Kelly, an Oklahoma business associate of Pruitt who was appointed to lead the Superfund cleanup program."Kell Kelly's service at EPA will be sorely missed," Pruitt said in a statement to CNN confirming the departure.Kelly was a senior adviser to Pruitt whose role at EPA involved managing the program that cleans contaminated sites, such as dumping grounds and former industrial or mining facilities.Pruitt appointed Kelly to the position after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, an arm of the federal government that oversees the banking industry, ended Kelly's banking career with a lifetime ban from the industry. The exact nature of his violations were not disclosed.Kelly's former bank, Spiritbank, handled the mortgage for Pruitt's 2004 home purchase in a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The bank was also involved in the purchase of a minor league baseball team by Pruitt and business partners.The New York Times reported that Kelly's bank also handled the mortgage on an Oklahoma City house Pruitt purchased through a shell company from a lobbyist. URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Users can even get exposure notifications if they’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive.“If someone tests positive then same day that person is isolated,” said Burke. “Which we think is critical for ultimately the efficacy of the testing program.”They’ve published a pre-print paper on their COVID-19 saliva test, which is undergoing peer review and are seeking FDA approval.For students like Alliyah, it’s one-stop piece of mind.“It makes you feel like I'm safer on campus because even though we only have to get tested twice a week you can get tested every day the testing site is open if you wanted to.” 2653

Tumblr, a popular blog service owned and operated by Yahoo, says it will ban "adult content" from its site on Dec. 17.The decision comes just weeks after the Tumblr app was temporarily removed from Apple's App Store after child pornography was found on the site. Tumblr said in a statement to The Verge that the decision to ban adult content did not stem from that incident.Tumblr's new policy bans "explicit sexual content" and most instances of nudity. The site added that nudity "found in art," as well as nudity in the context of health-related situations and in the context of political protest or newsworthy events would still be permitted.Tumblr also says that written erotica will still be permitted on the site.After Dec. 17, any explicit content flagged by algorithms will be hidden from public view but not deleted from the site.
