SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine begins circulating, there is another big logistical challenge ahead: reminding people to get the second dose.Both vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna require two doses spaced several weeks apart. People who get immunized often feel fatigue or soreness shortly after the shot and may experience fever, particularly after the second dose, according to clinical trial data.Doctors say those immediate, short-term side effects are a positive sign the immune system is revving up production.The side effects are similar to that of the shingles vaccine. But studies show about 20 percent of the people who get the shingles vaccine skip the second dose.Experts say if that happens with the COVID vaccines, there could be consequences.The worst-case-scenario is that skipping the second shot could allow the virus to spread and mutate, and potentially build resistance to the vaccines, according to Penn State University biologist David Kennedy.That outcome is considered unlikely, but the World Health Organization announced Monday it detected a new variation of the virus in England, showing the virus is already mutating without the evolution pressure of a mass vaccine program.“Does this make the virus more serious? Does it allow the virus to transmit more easily? Does it interfere with diagnostics? Would it interfere with vaccine effectiveness? These are questions. None of these questions have been addressed yet,” said Dr. Michael Ryan, director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program.When administered in two doses, Pfizer’s vaccine is 95 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 symptoms. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candalee Carbonel remembers the panic she felt Tuesday when her son's principal called about an incident involving her 7-year-old. "This is a horrible situation, I pray no other family has to go through this," said Carbonel. Her son Cole has autism and managed to walk off the Miller Elementary campus in Tierrasanta without staff noticing. He walked about half a mile to his house. "It broke my heart, knowing I drop off my child every day at school in their hands. They are now responsible to be his safety, to keep him out of danger. This really breaks my heart," said Carbonel. Carbonel says panic turned to frustration when she learned how the school handled the situation. "They should've called 911, called the police, then called me, and I could've helped. I could've been somewhere; I could've come home, I could've been here for my son when he was looking for me," said Carbonel. But instead, the principal went to look for Cole herself, driving to the family's home. She found Cole inside the house, watching television on the couch, and proceeded to take him back to the school and call Carbonel. "It broke my heart that a little kid could be running the streets, and no one called his mom," said Carbonel. She's grateful he made it home safe, but Carbonel says she can't help but wonder what could have happened to him on the walk home. The military family is new to the district, and Carbonel says she's been advocating for her son to have a one-on-one aide as he did in his last school district. She was pushing for more support for her son so that an incident like this wouldn't happen. SDUSD says as a result of this incident, they are going to add an additional staff member to provide above-and-beyond support to Cole's classroom.
