EAST VINCENT TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say an armed man who held off SWAT members for 10 hours surrendered after one of them sang him a Christmas carol.Nathaniel Lewis, of Chester County, Pennsylvania, was taken into custody in East Vincent Township early on Dec. 26.The Reading Eagle reports the 34-year-old Lewis allegedly fired at police officers who had responded when a concerned relative reported him acting erratically Christmas night.The shots hit a police vehicle, a house and another vehicle. Police returned fire.Eventually a negotiator got Lewis to agree to surrender after singing "White Christmas" to him.Lewis was charged with multiple counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other offenses. DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The United States and the Taliban have signed a peace agreement aimed at ending the 18-year war in Afghanistan, America's longest. The signing could help President Donald Trump fulfill a key campaign promise to extract America from its “endless wars.” Under the agreement, the U.S. will begin withdrawing thousands of troops in exchange for Taliban commitments to prevent Afghanistan from being a launchpad for terrorist attacks.If the Taliban meet their commitments, all U.S. troops would leave in 14 months. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to overthrow the Taliban, who had hosted Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida as they planned and celebrated the assault.The agreements are considered the first step for talks with Afghan factions, which are likely to be complicated. Under the agreement, the Afghan government would release 5,000 Taliban fighters, but it's unclear whether the government will do that. It's also unclear whether those fighters will abide by any peace deal, the Associated Press reported.The complete withdrawal of American troops would not depend on any specific outcome in talks between Taliban and other Afghan factions, the AP reports.In Qatar, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the Taliban, where the group has a political office, but did not sign the agreement. (KGTV) — El Cajon City Council voted Friday not to make any changes in how the city enforces the county's coronavirus public health orders.Thursday, Mayor Bill Wells called for the special meeting to discuss stopping El Cajon Police from enforcing public health measures around facial coverings and distancing.City Council leaders said the city would continue enforcing the rules as they have on a case-by-case basis, according to the mayor. So, if you like working out, you can meet friends at the gym. But if you’re going to stay in your comfort zone, you need to push yourself a little. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump says the United Arab Emirates and Israel will establish diplomatic ties in a deal that would halt the planned annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The announcement by Trump came in a tweet on Thursday, which states leaders from the three countries "spoke today and agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates."This agreement means the UAE, which is home to the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, would become the first Gulf Arab state to have ties to Israel. The statement says future diplomatic partnerships are possible, saying Israel will "focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world."Among Arab nations, only Egypt and Jordan have active diplomatic ties with Israel.
