BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose by 12.4 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Thursday.The growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April, as property sales in first-tier cities, including, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, contracted following a string of government measures to rein in price rises.Second-hand homes prices posted a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percent in May, but fell 0.4 percent from April, said the NBS in the statement.New home prices rose 15.1 percent year on year, down 0.3 percentage points from April.In May, floor space sold stood at 67.77 million square meters, a decrease of 12.74 million square meters from April.Floor space sold in the first five months climbed 22.5 percent from a year earlier to 302 million square meters. Growth in the first five months was down 10.3 percentage points compared with the January-April period.

HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. BRASILIA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The World Heritage Committee decided on Sunday to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting being held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil."Danxia Landform of China" is the general name of a Serial Nomination for World Natural Heritage. This nomination consists of six geologically and geographically related Danxia Landform areas which collectively featuring the outstanding universal values of Danxia geomorphology in south-east China.The six Danxia landform areas are: Mountain Langshan and Mountain Wanfoshan (Hunan Province), Mountain Danxiashan ( Guangdong Province), Taining and Guanzhoushan (Fujian Province), Mountain Longhushan and Guifeng (Jiangxi Province), Mountain Chishui (Guizhou Province), Fangyan and Mountain Jianglangshan ( Zhejiang Province).Danxia landform, a unique type of petrographic geomorphology, could be defined as "landform consists of red bed characterized by steep cliffs." The total core area of above five regions is 73,945 hectare, and the total buffer area is 65,446 hectare.

BERLIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China is gradually learning and absorbing ideas on human rights that can grow on its soil, and remains opposed to attempts by the West to impose its standards on China, says Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying.In a recent interview with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Fu said it seems "controversial and illogical" that Western countries acknowledge China's economic success and contributions to efforts against the global financial crisis, while "definitely" turning a blind eye to China's political progress.It seems as if the West wants to say that China has achieved all these without the leadership of the government and the Communist Party, maybe in total anarchy, Fu said."I still remember when I was an interpreter in the 1980s, human rights was always on the menu in our dialogues and our European guests brought lists of names with them," she said."Thirty years later, China has moved on, and so much has changed. In 2004, protection of human rights was incorporated into China's constitution. Many relevant laws and rules have been amended accordingly," Fu said.However, European delegations still come to China with the same stance, accusing China in a commanding way, Fu said."I really don't hear much mentioning of China' s human rights progress," she said.Yet, those political extremists seem to be presenting the whole picture of China's human rights for European countries, she said.Fu believes that to know the real China, it's not enough to "single out things you are interested in, or only listen to people who talk your talk."The most important is to look at the benefits of the majority of the people, she said.

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) voiced its support on Saturday for journalists' rights of supervision after a reporter was beaten when attempting to interview a stand-up comedian."It is imperative to safeguard journalists' legitimate rights to interview and stop any misconduct that interferes with journalists' legitimate interviews," read a brief announcement posted on the ACJA's website."To have supervision in accordance with the law is the legitimate rights of news organizations," it added.The move came after Zhou Wenfu, a Beijing Television (BTV) reporter, was repeatedly punched Sunday when attempting to interview Guo Degang, China's most famous stand-up comedian at his villa, according to clips of the beating that have been widely circulated on the Internet and broadcast on BTV.Zhou was trying to verify reports that Guo had illegally extended his property onto the public green space.
