CUSICK, Wa. – The pandemic is making learning tough on students across the country, but for one Native American school that relies on in-person learning, COVID-19 is threatening the core of its program.It’s a language born in the mountains of northeastern Washington. The language, a special dialect called Salish, is the native language of the Kalispel Indian tribe.“We live in the land along the rivers, we hunt we fish, that’s our way,” said JR Bluff, the language director of the Kalispel Tribe.A crucial piece of living the Kalispel way is speaking the Salish language. “Being connected to the ground, being connected to the world, our environment, the people, being connected to our ancestors, the language can do that. It gives you that identity,” said Bluff.It's an identity that was about to be lost forever. “We have four elders that have the language, they’re it, and so we have to move,” said Bluff.So, each day, JR Bluff works to keep his heritage alive. “We believe we are backed into the corner. We believe we don’t have tomorrow, it has to happen today,” said Bluff.Several years ago, Bluff started an immersion school to pass that language down to the next generation. All of the lessons are in Salish.Students who opt into the daily program come to the Salish school after a few hours at the public school across the street.The immersion school not only meets common core education standards, it gives both students and teachers a deep connection to their roots.“The language is healing. It filled a void I didn’t know I had,” said Jessie Isadore, the Language Program Coordinator. “When the kids have a strong foundation and know who they are and where they come from, they’ll be more successful.”Just when JR and his team saw their language growing strong through the students, the pandemic threatened to take it all away.“Our strength is relationships,” said Bluff. “You need to be in the seat with me.”“If the kids aren’t in the classroom, they’re home doing online learning, it’s not the same as being in the classroom. We lose time and we lose language,” said Isadore.To make sure that doesn’t happen, the school’s teachers are now creating Salish lessons online, something they’ve never done before.“We have not done zoom with our students yet, so that’s going to be a new process this year,” said Isadore.“We’re going to figure it out, and we have to figure it out. If I have to record, and we have to drop off a disc everyday, I’ll do it,” said Bluff.It’ll take the extra effort in a place where WiFi is not reliable and instruction is best done in person.“Our language, it’s a sacred breath, you’re not just hearing a word, you are with me and you’re hearing my breath, that’s the strength of our language,” said Bluff.While the future of this classroom is left uncertain, the future of this culture is something JR knows he will protect for his entire life.“Our language has had so many bumps in its thousand-year history, this is just another bump. It’s real in that it affects our community, affects our students, affects our parents, but I know it will pass,” said Bluff. 3111
Community colleges have always put career readiness at the forefront of the courses they offer. Now, in the current economic downturn, they're hoping to increase their student to job pipeline."We really feel like our role is to identify what jobs are available right now for students that they can apply and be working while going to school. What are the future jobs that we need to be preparing students for?" asked Dr. Shanna Jackson, the President of Nashville State Community College in Tennessee. Dr. Jackson says students are battling so much right now, including choosing between having to work and going to school.Dr. Jackson is hoping an million investment in the company Handshake, to help expand job recruitment to community colleges, will help."We actually already have 70 community colleges that have already signed on to be early pilot partners with us so we're really learning from them. We’re listening to them. We’ve started an advisory group with this population so that we can continue to ascertain what are the biggest pain points. What are their biggest areas of need for these students," said Christine Cruzvergara, Handshake's VP of Higher Education and Student Success.Handshake helps connect students with employers through career fairs, job postings and other services, and previously only worked with four-year universities. Cruzvergara says they're working with state systems throughout the country to connect with technical and community colleges."It'll be a really similar experience. It’ll all be part of one network and that's actually why it's a huge benefit to community colleges. We know for some of our biggest employers that they want to recruit 2-year talent. They don't see 2-year talent as different from 4-year talent for internships and jobs, they simply have a number of different types of roles and positions that are available to all types of students," said Cruzvergara. The partnership hopes to bring new recruitment benefits to students."The tools that something like this provides really enhances their opportunity to cast a wider net and then they can decide which job offer they want to say yes to instead of maybe taking the first one they hear about," said Dr. Jackson. (AP) — Wednesday marks five years since nine black worshipers were killed in a racist attack at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.The white supremacist shooter, Dylan Roof, targeted his victims because of the color of their skin. He was later convicted on murder and hate crime charges. He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution at a federal prison in Indiana.The massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church on June 17, 2015, led South Carolina leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol lawn.But as the U.S. is roiled again by more shocking deaths of African Americans, South Carolina isn't removing more monuments of historical figures who repressed or oppressed blacks.Republican leaders like House Speaker Jay Lucas said in 2015 they would not consider any more changes after the Confederate flag came down and have kept their word. And state law protects monuments without a two-thirds vote of the Legislature.To mark the anniversary of the massacre, the people behind the documentary “Emanuel” will hold a discussion about racial justice. The movie explores the shooting and race relations in the port city that once served as a gateway to the slave trade.Producers Mariska Hargitay and Viola Davis will be part of the discussion, and U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clayborn will host the event, The Post and Courier reports.The discussion will be streamed live on Facebook starting at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday and the film is available to watch online for free here until June 23. 1523
Cliff Robinson, a former UConn star and longtime top sixth man in the NBA, has died. His death was confirmed by UConn. No cause of death was given, though former Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said Robinson had a stroke 2 1/2 years ago. Nicknamed Uncle Cliffy, Robinson played 18 seasons in the NBA and helped the Portland Trail Blazers reach two NBA Finals. Before that, he was the centerpiece of Calhoun’s early teams at UConn.
