SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a bitter primary, voters are getting a clearer picture of who will move on in the race to replace Congressman Duncan Hunter in East County's 50th Congressional District. Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa, a former Congressman, are leading the field. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Campa-Najjar had 34 percent of the vote; Issa had 25 percent, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio had 21 percent, and State Senator Brian Jones had 11 percent. There are still about 350,000 provisional and mail-in ballots to be counted. It is unclear how many of those would include district voters. RELATED: Campa-Najjar, Issa hold leads in 50th Congressional DistrictHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one felony count of campaign fraud. The seat has remained vacant since. On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar and Issa began taking at aim at one another in anticipation of facing off in the November runoff. Campa-Najjar pointed out at that Issa does not live in the 50th Congressional District, and said he was part of an older political establishment. RELATED: Check election resultsIssa represented the neighboring 49th District until 2018, when he decided not to seek re-election. It then went to Mike Levin, a Democrat. "He's been going around the county trying to find a seat for himself. He fled his own seat and now wants to run in this district. It's not up for grabs, it's not for sale. We're going to vote for someone who is from the district," Campa-Najjar said. Meanwhile, Issa said he is very connected to the 50th District, and has represented swaths of it in the past. RELATED: Gloria, Sherman take early leads in mayoral raceIssa said Campa-Najjar is running in the wrong district because his positions do not fit with its conservative ideals. "At the end of the day, I can't take him as seriously, as long as he isn't voting for a Republican speaker that's going to, in fact, move a conservative, positive agenda, which I will," Issa said. Campa-Najjar is pitching a moderate agenda that he says can bring together those who are both pro-choice and pro-life, and those who are pro-and anti-gun rights. RELATED: Early votes reject Measure B, narrowly approve Measure AWhile Campa-Najjar took in the most votes Tuesday, he did so as the only active Democrat in the race (Marisa Calderon, a Democrat, got about 5 percent of the vote but had dropped out earlier). Add up the Republican votes, and Campa-Najjar loses. That does not bode well when he faces one Republican in November."That would say, 'Hey, politics is going to go back to normal, if that's what we see in a month (when final votes are counted),'" said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at U.C. San Diego. The primary ends a bitter campaign period in which Issa and DeMaio took out blistering ads against each other over who was more loyal to President Trump. Issa said Wednesday he does not expect that level of vitriol against Campa-Najjar, and complimented his enthusiasm and vigor as a candidate. In a statement, Carl DeMaio's spokesman said the campaign is waiting to make sure all ballots are counted. 3175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tiger at an East County animal sanctuary has been killed by another tiger after staff accidentally allowed them to come in contact. ABC10 News confirmed that the surviving tiger is the same one that was rescued from a highly publicized smuggling bust at the border.Bobbi Brink is the founder of Alpine nonprofit Lions Tigers & Bears. She spoke to ABC10 News on Tuesday about Monday's incident where 7-year-old Maverick was attacked by another tiger named Moka in a tragedy of human error. No staff members or visitors were hurt. "It's a terrible accident and it occurred during the daily share that the tigers do every day when they put the tigers separately. Well, they accidentally put them in contact," she told ABC10 News.Moka sustained only a few scratches. He's the same tiger that was first reported on in 2017 when he was rescued from a smuggler at the U.S.-Mexico border. "They found him on the floorboard of somebody's car and he went to the zoo and the zoo couldn't keep him so he came to Lions Tigers & Bears," added Brink.Maverick was rescued in 2014 by California Fish and Wildlife staff after he was born in captivity and purchased illegally by a buyer who wasn't licensed to own an exotic animal. The nonprofit stated that it regularly holds safety trainings including one just last weekend. It plans to extensively review its protocols this week. "The process of caring for these animals doesn't leave any space for error," added Brink. On Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for the nonprofit called to say that the facility remains open. ABC10 News had previously reported that it would remain closed until at least Saturday, after Brink stated that in an interview with ABC10 News earlier on Tuesday. 1752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A swarm of ladybugs was so large in Southern California it was picked up on radar, the National Weather Service tweeted Tuesday. According to Alex Tardy with the National Weather Service, the echo picked up on radar was so large it covered all the San Bernardino mountains, high deserts and Inland Empire.“The large echo showing up on SoCal radar this evening is not precipitation, but actually a cloud of lady bugs termed a ‘bloom’ #CAwx,” the tweet read. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego photographer is searching for a mystery couple seen in a Sunset Cliffs engagement photo.Elmer Rodriguez says he was out for a walk with his kids taking pictures of the sunset in late February. When he looked off to the side, he says he spotted the couple in the distance and decided to capture the special moment. “I decided it’s a good memory and they should have it,” Rodriguez said. But when Rodriguez walked over to meet the couple, he says they vanished. RELATED: Michigan photographer finds mystery engagement couple in viral Yosemite photoRodriguez posted the photo on social media in hopes of finding the couple.“I took this photo a few weeks ago, in #sunsetcliffs I called it, 'love at dusk' if anyone knows them, please let them know,” Rodriguez said in an Instagram post.If he finds the couple, Rodriguez says he wants to give the photos away free of charge. “I’m not trying to get any profit, it’s just something I believe they should have."In late 2018, a separate picture showing a couple getting engaged in Yosemite went viral. The Michigan photographer who took that photo was eventually able to find the couple. 1167

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego pilot is attempting a historic flight to promote global peace. Robert DeLaurentis will first be traveling to the South Pole and then to the North Pole, connecting the only two places on the planet where peace exists. "It's a mission of global peace. We like to say oneness. One planet, one people, one plane," said DeLaurentis. They have been working on upgrading the 1983 aircraft for several years now; DeLaurentis named it Citizen of the World. "It's like taking a classic car and turning it into a race car. It's been talking to us, letting us know what needs to be fixed or replaced," DeLaurentis says. It's not the first time DeLaurentis has attempted an ambitious journey. In 2015, he circumnavigated the globe, braving a failing engine at one point. "My dad says he'd prefer I have a country club membership than do these flights!" jokes DeLaurentis. But it was on that trip he learned no matter where you live, we're all more similar than we may think. DeLaurentis will be the first to complete the journey with this class of airplane. And will also be the first to use biofuel over the poles, which is better for the environment. He'll have a NASA experiment on board and will also be testing the air for pollutants every step of the way.DeLaurentis will face harsh conditions in the South Pole, like extreme winds and weather fronts. But despite the dangers, he says this is what he's meant to do."People work hard, and they get to the point where they decide they want to do some other things, for me, it's just to go out in the world and maybe make a difference. So I'll take my chances."The San Diego pilot is getting help from over 90 sponsors to make the trip a reality. He departs Saturday from Gillespie Field, sometime between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.You can follow each minute of the journey through his website. 1863
