CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A new support group in the South Bay hopes to fill a gap, serving children whose loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. The group was created by siblings Sophia and Vincent Epley, ages 13 and 11. Last year the two found themselves facing a heartbreaking reality when both parents were diagnosed with cancer. Sophia and Vincent wanted to create a safe place where kids can ask questions and meet others going through similar situations. The Children and Family Cancer Support Group is led by clinical social worker Cara Fairfax and is open to all families.Details: 613

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - After a series of fires, Chula Vista Police have begun the process of clearing people out of the Otay Mesa River Valley. Tuesday morning, members of the CVPD Homeless Outreach Team handed out vacate notices to people living in the area. Several fires have broken out in the river bed recently, requiring large responses from local fire agencies. Chula Vista Police said after people have been moved out, they will begin clearing brush. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was stabbed in the torso and leg Friday morning at a homeless encampment in Chula Vista, police said.Firefighters requested police assistance at 4:30 a.m. after responding to a report of an injured man in the 2400 block of Main Street, east of Interstate 5, Chula Vista police Lt. (KGTV) - A South Bay family is mourning the loss of a beloved grandfather after a long battle with COVID-19.Salvador Munoz first started feeling sick in early August, developing a cough and fever, and then testing positive for COVID-19. About 10 days later, an ambulance rushed him to a hospital."He became disoriented, tired and couldn't get out of bed. When he talked to the paramedics, he couldn't really speak because he was short on his breath," said daughter-in-law Venessa Munoz.Venessa and his wife Bertha say he was admitted, and a week later, placed on a ventilator."He had complications and then would get better again. Just an emotional roller coaster for everybody," said Venessa.Salvador developed complications with his kidneys and then his heart. After 45 days in the ICU, Salvador Munoz, a father of five, and grandfather of seven, passed away at the age of 68."It's just so hard, so hard. I am relieved to know he is not suffering," said Bertha.Loved ones say Salvador, who owned his own cleaning business, was energetic, funny and joyful."Always the first one dancing. He lived to put smiles on everybody's faces," said Venessa.Bertha tell us she was with Salvador for more than 50 years and never spent a day apart."He was always a loving, caring, respectful man ... He's an angel," said BerthaBertha isn't sure how he contracted the virus. They rarely went out and wore masks."This is a serious thing, so take of yourself.
