SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 3.48 million people in rural areas of north China's Hebei Province have been given access to safe drinking water this year, a local official said Saturday.Authorities in the province have invested more than 1.7 billion yuan (270 million U.S. dollars) so far in 2011 in building drinking water infrastructure, said Liang Jianyi, deputy director of the Hebei Provincial Department of Water and Resources.More than 32 million rural people in Hebei, especially in mountainous and coastal areas, had long suffered from unsafe water, with problems including high fluorine and alkaline contents, Liang said.From 2005 to 2010, the provincial authorities put almost 6 billion yuan into providing safe drinking water for 13 million rural residents, he added.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- People with diets high in several vitamins or in omega 3 fatty acids are less likely to have the brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease than people whose diets are not high in those nutrients, according to a new study published on Wednesday in the online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.Those with diets high in omega 3 fatty acids and in vitamins C, D, E and the B vitamins also had higher scores on mental thinking tests than people with diets low in those nutrients. These omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D are primarily found in fish. The B vitamins and antioxidants C and E are primarily found in fruits and vegetables.In another finding, the study showed that people with diets high in trans fats were more likely to have brain shrinkage and lower scores on the thinking and memory tests than people with diets low in trans fats. Trans fats are primarily found in packaged, fast, fried and frozen food, baked goods and margarine spreads.The study involved 104 people with an average age of 87 and very few risk factors for memory and thinking problems. Blood tests were used to determine the levels of various nutrients present in the blood of each participant. All of the participants also took tests of their memory and thinking skills. A total of 42 of the participants had MRI scans to measure their brain volume. Overall, the participants had good nutritional status, but seven percent were deficient in vitamin B12 and 25 percent were deficient in vitamin D.Study author Gene Bowman, of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, said that the nutrient biomarkers in the blood accounted for a significant amount of the variation in both brain volume and thinking and memory scores. For the thinking and memory scores, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 17 percent of the variation in the scores. For brain volume, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 37 percent of the variation."These results need to be confirmed, but obviously it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet," Bowman said.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday revoked its approval of Avastin for treating the breast cancer after concluding that the drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for that use.Avastin will still remain on the market as an approved treatment for certain types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer."After reviewing the available studies it is clear that women who take Avastin for metastatic breast cancer risk potentially life-threatening side effects without proof that the use of Avastin will provide a benefit, in terms of delay in tumor growth, that would justify those risks," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "Nor is there evidence that use of Avastin will either help them live longer or improve their quality of life. "Avastin's risks include severe high blood pressure; bleeding and hemorrhaging; heart attack or heart failure; and the development of perforations in different parts of the body such as the nose, stomach, and intestines.Avastin was approved for metastatic breast cancer in February 2008 under the FDA's accelerated approval program, which allows a drug to be approved based on data that are not sufficiently complete to permit full approval. After the approval, the drug's sponsor, Genentech, completed two additional clinical trials and submitted the data from those studies to the FDA. These data showed only a small effect on tumor growth without evidence that patients lived any longer or had a better quality of life compared to taking standard chemotherapy alone -- not enough to outweigh the risk of taking the drug.FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which is responsible for the approval of this drug, ultimately concluded that the results of these additional studies did not justify continued approval and notified Genentech it was proposing to withdraw approval of the indication.Genentech did not agree with the Center's evaluation of the data and, following the procedures set out in FDA regulations, requested a hearing on the Center's withdrawal proposal, with a decision to be made by the Commissioner. BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The central government allocated 935 million yuan (147 million U.S. dollars) Wednesday to areas hit by rain-triggered floods, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said.The relief funds, jointly allocated by the MCA and the Ministry of Finance, will be used for disaster survivors to relocate, rebuild houses and buy daily necessities.The funds will also be delivered to the family members of the victims, according to the ministry.The funds will go to the flood-hit provinces of Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Shanxi and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.The government already allocated 132 million yuan (20.6 million U.S. dollars) to disaster hit areas immediately after the floods happened in September.Rain-triggered floods and disasters left 97 people dead, 21 missing and 1.23 million affected in September in China's 11 provincial-level regions, and a total of 1.93 million people were relocated urgently to avoid further casualties.The disasters also caused an estimated 21 billion yuan (3.29 billion U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses, according to official data.
