The FDA said in a news conference on Friday that there have been “roughly" five adverse reactions to Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, which began distribution earlier this week.According to FDA and Pfizer officials, 2.9 million doses of the vaccine was distributed this week. Those doses mostly went to health care workers and those living and working in assisted living facilities. It’s unclear exactly how many of those 2.9 million doses have been administered, as of Friday.Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, told reporters on Friday that one of the five adverse events caused a serious reaction. Marks did not go into detail on the locations or conditions of all the cases. The FDA has not responded for a request for additional information.Marks said that a case in Alaska was the most serious of the reactions being investigated.“We will continue to watch these closely. It is difficult to talk about them without any kind of good certainty until we have more information on them,” Marks said.FDA officials said that it’s possible the reactions were from the vaccine’s active ingredient polyethylene glycol. According to government information, the ingredient can cause known side effects such as bloating, diarrhea, nausea, cramps, gas and hives.FDA administrator Dr. Stephen Hahn said that the vaccine’s monitoring program is working well.“One of the things the FDA does well and uniquely is really getting to the bottom to events like allergic reactions,” Hahn said.On Friday, a second vaccine received FDA authorization. The CDC is changing their recommendations for travelers, urging them to pay attention to local and state recommendations, and dropping their 14-day quarantine for international or out-of-state travelers.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their travel requirements Friday, according to multiple media reports. They now advise travelers to "follow state, territorial, tribal and local recommendations or requirements after travel." Previously, the agency recommended a 14-day quarantine for those returning from international destinations or any area with a high concentration of coronavirus cases.The guidelines still urge travelers to limit their risk of infecting others by social distancing and wearing a mask. “You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can still spread COVID-19 to others," the CDC states on their website.There are still international travelers who are not allowed to enter the U.S. based on presidential proclamations. Foreign nationals who have spent time in these countries in the last 14 days before travel cannot enter the U.S.: China, Iran, United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, and most of Europe. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed a report by The Associated Press that some of the service members who deployed to Washington, D.C., last month in response to civil unrest were issued bayonets. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley confirmed the information in a letter sent to two Democratic U.S. representatives last month. The Pentagon letter comes as the AP also reports that members of the 82nd Airborne who deployed to Washington were not trained in riot response. The soldiers were scheduled to learn riot control tactics once arriving. The soldiers were ultimately not used and were sent back to their home base. 638

The death toll from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the Indonesian island of Lombok more than a week ago has surged to 436, authorities said Monday.The number is expected to rise further as search and rescue efforts continue in the rubble strewn across the island by the quake and another one that struck on August 9.Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has been working with the country's military and police to supply aid and food to the 350,000 people displaced by the quakes.As of Monday, 21 tonnes of aid had been delivered on a cargo plane, according to BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. 631
