SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced today that all city-owned property along the San Diego River has been cleaned at least once. The city owns roughly one-third of riverfront property, and employees have removed nearly 99 tons of debris from 32 locations since last September, he said.Faulconer said the cleanup will continue, particularly in regard to outreach and coordination with owners of the remaining two-thirds of land along the river."The San Diego River is one of our most precious natural resources and we must continue to give it the care and attention it deserves," Faulconer said. "While we've cleared all of the city's property once, we still have a lot more work to do, so we're encouraging every property owner next to the river to join our cleanup efforts and help preserve the San Diego River for future generations."City employees have sent letters to 33 private property owners,including several businesses, that collectively own another third of riverfront property. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors voted 4-1 today to have the chief administrative officer direct the Health and Human Services Agency to develop a plan for in-house medical care of jail inmates and possible outsourcing of those duties as well.Sheriff Bill Gore will review the plan, and officials will also put out requests for proposals from private contractors to handle those duties.Supervisor Dianne Jacob made the motion to examine both an in-house model and outsourcing.``I don't think we should go with just one approach,'' Jacob said, adding she is a proponent of outsourcing county services, if it results in good service for less money.Gore has cited his department's million annual health care bill for inmates as a reason to explore cost-saving strategies. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. He faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.Merron allegedly attacked the woman as she was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street about 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, pushing her into a back room, taking her car keys and threatening her with a knife.Following a struggle, the victim, whose name was withheld, was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A newly formed steering committee is working to drastically reduce the number of hepatitis C cases in San Diego County, it was announced Monday. The county's Health and Human Services Agency and the American Liver Foundation-Pacific Coast Division oversee the Eliminate Hepatitis C San Diego County Initiative steering committee, which also includes members of the public and private medical communities. The aim is to reduce new hepatitis C infections in the county by 80 percent and deaths by 65 percent by 2030. ``By joining forces and strengthening our local efforts, we expect to eliminate this curable disease as a public health threat and improve longevity and quality of life for people living with hepatitis C,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 3 1/2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C. The county reported 3,112 new hepatitis C cases in 2017. Most complications from the infection develop over the course of two to three decades, but acute hepatitis C infections can develop within six months after exposure. ``Most people with hepatitis C might not be aware of their infection because they do not feel ill,'' said ALF-Pacific Coast Division Executive Director Scott Suckow. Hepatitis C is generally transmitted through exposure to blood, especially among people who inject drugs and share needles. The infection can also be spread via sexual transmission, but it isn't as common as blood exposure. CDC officials recommend that people born between 1945 and 1965, current and former injection drug users, people with known exposures to hepatitis C and recipients of blood transfusions and solid organ transplants prior to July 1992 get tested for the infection. The steering committee, which met for the first time last week, plans to present its plan to reduce hepatitis C contractions and deaths to the Board of Supervisors by the end of next year. County health officials have already suggested that the expansion of testing and treatment access should be a priority for the county going forward. ``There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but there's a cure, so we'll be working with our public and private partners to try to put an end to the virus in San Diego County,'' Wooten said. 2333
