SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego firefighters found themselves in an unusual position Thursday, battling flames inside a city water tower. The fire broke out as crews were demolishing the tower on federal property in Point Loma. Officials said some of the materials the demolition team was using to cut the tank apart caught the scaffolding on fire. “The wind today drove that fire and blew it very quickly,” a firefighter told 10News. With much of the tower covered in plastic, firefighters had to go inside, climbing through scaffolding with their hoses. “The potential for three rescues and the hook and ladder trucks out here, I thought maybe this is a serious event but they seem to have it completely under control,” said neighbor Casey Schnoor. Firefighters spent the afternoon hosing down the rest of the tower as a precaution. 839

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego officials plan to expand and speed up an audit of water billing issues, after admitting more than 300 residents were incorrectly overcharged last year.Mayor Kevin Faulconer, joined by City Councilmembers Chris Cate and Lorie Zapf, City Auditor Eduardo Luna, and Public Utilities Department (PUD) Director Vic Bianes, said the audit will help find any possible inaccuracies and suggest any needed changes."San Diegans need to be able to trust that their bills are correct, that the new technology we are implementing is working properly, and that every cent they pay goes to making sure we have safe, reliable water," Faulconer said. "I welcome this independent review of operations to determine how we can better serve our customers and reassure them that we are doing everything we can to ensure the accuracy of their bills."RELATED: Woman gets 0 water bill. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans played the role of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday as they delivered some holiday cheer to seniors in need downtown.Volunteers from the non-profits Serving Seniors and Friends of Downtown teamed up to deliver bags filled with essentials to seniors. Bags were filled with items including food, blankets, fresh towels, and other care products.Organizers of the event say that the seniors they serve don't have families or anyone to visit them and, in some cases, this is the only present they receive during the holidays."Serving seniors sent us pictures last year and we got to see seniors receiving them and it brought tears to your eyes," Lori Carpenter, with Friends of Downtown, said.More than 200 bags were handed out during Saturday's event. 786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego may soon have more living spaces in commercial zones, due to ease of regulations approved by the San Diego City Council Tuesday. The amendments to the Live/Work Quarters rules allow for smaller living space in a place of business, add more business types that can include living areas, and authorize additional locations where Live/Work Quarters are allowed. The changes reduce the required minimum floor area from 750 square feet to 500 square feet, and eliminate the requirement for additional parking.RELATED: San Diego housing report focuses on region's needsTuesday’s amendments were part of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s Housing SD reforms.“This is going to put underutilized commercial and industrial spaces to work in tackling San Diego’s housing crisis,” Mayor Faulconer said. “Lifting restrictions on housing will bring new life to old buildings and allow businesses owners to live where they work. Common-sense approaches like this will help reduce our housing shortage and increase housing affordability.”Mayor Faulconer and council members have taken action over the past year to spur boost construction of low-income and middle-class housing, speed up the development review process, direct funding toward affordable housing, and encourage growth in crucial transit areas, a spokesman from the mayor’s office said in a written statement.RELATED: Making It in San Diego complete coverage 1429

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is making the push for top talent and to dispel any lingering assumptions the region can't compete with larger hubs around the country. The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Tuesday launched their campaign "San Diego: Life. Changing.," an effort to attract and retain talent centered around STEM - science, technology, engineering, art, and math.RELATED: Could San Diego be a possible location for Amazon HQ2?"We’re not Boston, New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. And we don’t want to be," Mark Cafferty, San Diego Regional EDC president, said. "This campaign was developed by San Diego ... and for San Diego to communicate the unique opportunities and experiences our region offers to companies and employees alike."Officials unveiled the campaign at Tuesday's San Diego Padres game before about 15,000 in attendance. The privately-funded campaign hopes to elevate the region's standing and dispel the perception of limited opportunities in the region and is set to run through 2019, according to San Diego Regional EDC.The Regional EDC said it's critical to attract talent that appeals to global companies to the area for San Diego to remain competitive.RELATED: Group launches to help women start businesses"The San Diego: Life. Changing. campaign reinforces the message we’ve been telling candidates for years: San Diego is a dynamic, rich environment with incredible opportunities to have both the career and life you want, that you just don't find in other regions," Melinda Del Toro, a senior vice president at San Diego Brand Alliance, said.Nearly 100 companies have signed onto San Diego Brand Alliance, including Illumina, Human Longevity, Inc., Sony, Qualcomm, and Intuit, which will serve as unofficial advisors to the campaign.RELATED: Report: San Diego universities among best in U.S.Over the next two years, Regional EDC hopes to build out the campaign, including online, and partner with more San Diego organizations to focus on specific markets around the country. 2069
