The new year brings a new Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, as Steve Harvey and the Prize Patrol gear up for another year of big prizes, including ,000 a year for life.Unfortunately, scammers are also gearing up to impersonate them, as one family learned. They sure could use that ,000 now to make up for the money they just lost to a scam.Official PCH letter arrives in mailLarenda Jackson and her mom, Annie Williams, have always dreamed of the Prize Patrol coming to their home. So when a letter arrived with an official seal and the signature of PCH's Dave Sayer, the older woman thought her ship had come in."He said I won," Williams said. "I won million."The letter explained she would receive million in the next few weeks, and that they were sending a check along with the letter to cover her insurance and attorney fees.So Williams followed the instructions, depositing the ,000 check in her PNC bank account, then sending ,000 of it to the "attorneys" once the deposit cleared."Mom was leery about it," daughter Larenda Jackson said. "But when they said the cash was available, the check cleared, she figured if she sent anything it was the check they sent her."She claims the bank told her the check had cleared. "Yes, I'm displeased with the bank because they said the funds were available," Jackson said. But a few days later, the women got some bad news from PNC Bank. "They said the ,000 check was insufficient, and that you have overdraft fees," Jackson said. In addition, she says the bank was asking her mother to return ,000 to them before they would allow her further access to her account — money she no longer had.It was all a scam.Warning signs of a PCH scam 1716

The city of Paradise, California is literally being rebuilt from ashes.“November 8th is a day nobody around here will ever forget,” said Rick Carhart, of Cal FIRE Butte County. “The first time I drove through Paradise my impression was It looked more like a bomb went off or a war zone than a fire went through.”The small city in northern California saw the state's biggest and most deadly wildfire ever.Carhart says it cost more than million to fight this inferno, which was named the Camp Fire.“There are still a lot of raw emotions and feelings even among our firefighters,” he said. After firefighters put out the last flames, the Camp Fire had claimed 86 lives and destroyed more than 13,000 houses, including the home of the town mayor. “It’s a sick feeling,” said Paradise Mayor Jody Jones of losing her house to the fire.Jones is one of many that are now building new houses in Paradise. “It’s an arduous process to rebuild,” she said. “We’re really pioneers. We’re building a whole entire town from scratch.”Despite tens of millions of dollars coming in from state and federal funding, some in this town still don’t have enough money to rebuild. “Before, we used to play it month by month,” said Jonathan Valdez, a longtime Paradise resident, who lost his house in the fire. “Now we play it day by day.” Valdez is now living in an RV and paying 0 a month in gas to keep generators running for electricity.“At times its rough,” he said. “But you got to make the best of it.”Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, the Camp Fire spread fast, burning down areas the size of football fields in just a few moments. At Paradise High School, students, staff and the community are starting the healing process through sports.More than 5,000 people came out to watch the Bobcats play their first game since the fire. A number Paradise High School head coach Rick Prinz says is an amazing for this town that lost 90 percent of its 26,000 residents.“Although many people have left and had to live somewhere else,” Prinz said. “It says a lot that so many would come back and participate in that one event.”From football season to now a new fire season, the people of Paradise are moving on as painful as it may be.“I’m 91 years old,” said Paradise local Ramona Balken. “To start over at 91 is not very much fun.”Balken lost everything she owned in the Camp Fire and she didn’t have renter’s insurance. Despite not being compensated for her losses, Balken still supports how her elected officials are handling this disaster.“They’re doing everything they can,” she said. “This is a good town. We have good people here.” 2633

The man behind the American pastime of paint-by-numbers pictures died on April 1 at the age of 93, according to his son. Dan Robbins created the first pictures and helped popularize paint-by-numbers kits in the 1950s.Robbins' son, Larry, said his dad was working as a package designer for the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit when he came up with the idea for paint-by-numbers in the late 1940s. He worked there as a graphic artist and sold children's paint that was washable. The idea for paint-by-numbers started when Robbins' boss asked him to come up with an item that could be geared towards adults. Robbins got inspiration for the product from Leonardo da Vinci. The famous artist would hand out numbered designs to apprentices. Robbins took that concept and evolved it into paint-by-numbers.Robbins' work had a significant impact on the pop culture of the 1950s and '60s, since post-World War II Americans found themselves with leisure time to pursue hobbies and activities such as painting."Dad was a very, very modest person. He would never bring up his career. If someone asked him, he'd explain," Larry Robbins said. "Dad was into the accomplishment of providing ... for people like me who can't draw a stick man, to be able to paint and the experiencing of creating a nice piece of art work."Before computers were involved, the artists creating the pictures had to paint the image and then use a piece of acetate or clear plastic over the original to create the areas for each number. Beginner kits started with 20 colors and the number of colors increased with the level of difficulty.Robbins' son said that his father didn't get rich from his invention. Dan Robbins didn't own the company, and eventually his product's parent company, Craft Master, was bought by General Mills.Robbins ended up in the Chicago area and did his own consulting work. He did art work, packaging, and new product development until he retired in the 1980s, according to his son.His work is still on display in the Detroit Historical Museum, along with works from the likes of Henry Ford.Dan Robbins died in Toledo, Ohio, after contracting pneumonia following a series of falls, according to his son. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 2289
