CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A photographer in Carlsbad is helping to preserve the memory of the Greatest Generation, one portrait at a time.John Riedy works with The Greatest Generations Foundation. The group takes Veterans back to the battlefields on which they fought.During the trips, Riedy takes a portrait of each vet on their battlefield."It helps them realize that we’re not going to forget these guys," Riedy says. "When they’re gone, their legacies are going to live on."Over the last 12 years, Riedy has gone on nearly 50 trips with the Foundation and taken close to 300 portraits.For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, he chose 75 of his favorite to hang in two galleries near Normandy and Omaha Beach."I think they were blown away to see their portraits up there," Riedy says of the reaction the Vets had when they got a first look at the galleries.Riedy says it's his personal way to honor the sacrifices they made."When you step onto Omaha beach, or you go to that cemetery at Omaha, and you see what they were up against when you see those cliffs, it's awe-inspiring," he says. "It’s like a switch flipped inside me. From them on I knew this was going to be my calling."Riedy and the Foundation have started to expand the program beyond World War II Veterans. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- The longest-serving mail carrier in Carlsbad is set to retire Friday after 58 years of service.Mack Mata Jr. will be recognized Friday in front of his peers and family.“It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 58 years,” said Postmaster Cindy Gibson.In the fall of 1960, Mata and his fiancée were downtown when she saw a “help wanted” sign in the window of the post office. After applying and completing a test, Mata was sworn in as a postal employee in Carlsbad in November of the same year.Mata recalled his fond memories at the office, saying he would watch kids grow up and move away only to return and become his customers.Mata also remembers the time he saved a woman along his route. “One day, something told me I should check on her and sure enough, I found her lying on the ground after she had fallen and couldn’t get up. She said, ‘I knew you’d eventually show up to help me.'A lot has changed since then. Mata says he used to make special deliveries on his bicycle and stamps only cost four cents.Mata is now married to Sheila Mata, who works at the Vista Post Office, has two sons, four grandchildren and plans to spend lots of time gardening and traveling with his wife after retirement. 1278

CASS COUNTY, Ind. — Six people, including four children, died early Wednesday morning in a house fire near Logansport, Indiana.The fire started at about 1:45 a.m., Wednesday in the 4300 block of Pottawatomie Road. Deputies who arrived said they climbed on the roof and broke windows to try and get inside, but the flames were too intense, Logansport Pharos-Tribune reporter Mitchell Kirk said.A man and a woman made it out of the house and were hospitalized. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Indiana Fire Marshal's Office has assigned three investigators to the site.  634

California regulators want to tax text messages to increase funds for programs that bring connectivity to underserved residents.A new surcharge proposed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) wouldn't be a per-text tax, but a monthly fee based a cellular bill that includes any fees for text-message services. Most carriers offer a flat fee option for texting, and already charge a similar fee for other services included in the bill — such as phone calls. The exact structure of the charge would vary from carrier to carrier.The commission will vote on the measure January 10, 2019, and is facing strong opposition from industry trade groups like the CTIA, which represents AT&T Mobility, Sprint, and T-Mobile. (AT&T is the parent company of CNN.)The 52-page proposal by CPUC Commissioner Carla J. Peterman lays out the details of the plan, and says the state's Public Purpose Program budget is going up while incoming fees to fill it are decreasing. Currently the surcharge rate is less than 7%.The proposed plan could be complicated by a new Federal Communication Commission ruling. On Wednesday, the FCC approved a new rule that classifies text messages as an "information service" like email. Proponent of the rule say it will give carriers the ability to crack down on spam messages, and critics say it could lead to carriers censoring messages.The CTIA argued in a legal filing submitted Wednesday that if texts are an information service, then the CPUC doesn't have authority over them and can't add on surcharges. It claims the proposal would go against federal law.The industry group also says the proposal would create inequity "between wireless carriers and other providers of messaging services," such as WhatsApp, iMessage and Skype."Subjecting wireless carriers' text messaging traffic to surcharges that cannot be applied to the lion's share of messaging traffic and messaging providers is illogical, anticompetitive, and harmful to consumers," the CTIA said in its filing.In light of the FCC ruling and other legal filings submitted to the CPUC, the group could change its draft proposal before the vote next month.According to the CPUC, the charges go to a number of different programs, including 911 services, subsidized phone service for low-income residents, and equipment for deaf and hard-of-hearing users. 2379

CBS Television Studios has released a statement after "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette implied that "multiple physical assaults" were the reason she quit the hit series.In a series of tweets earlier this week, Perrette -- who played forensic scientist Abby Sciuto -- talked about "tabloid articles out there that are telling total lies about me" and referenced her not "spilling the beans."She also mentioned "a very rich, very powerful publicity 'machine'" she also alleged was spreading false information about her before tweeting the reason she says she left."Multiple Physical Assaults," Perrette tweeted. "I REALLY get it now. Stay safe. Nothing is worth your safety. Tell someone."She left the long-running CBS crime drama after 15 seasons on the series in an episode aired last week."Pauley Perrette had a terrific run on NCIS and we are all going to miss her," CBS Television Studios wrote in a statement provided to CNN."Over a year ago, Pauley came to us with a workplace concern," the statement went on to say. "We took the matter seriously and worked with her to find a resolution.
