OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-wide program to help community college students transfer to 4-year schools has found increased success at Mira Costa College.The Puente Program helps educationally disadvantaged students navigate the complicated process of applying to 4-year schools, while also bringing them up to speed with other students who start their college careers at universities."They would transfer, but they were not ready," says Mira Costa Puente Counseling Coordinator Sinar Lomeli. "They didn't have the reading or writing comprehension skills. So they couldn't compete with students who were already there."The Puente Program began in 1981 at Chabot College in Hayward. It's now in 64 community colleges around the state. The students take two semesters of English reading and writing classes, and also get mentoring and counseling to guide them towards a 4-year degree."When I got to school, I was like a dog chasing a car," says Mira Costa Sophomore Manny Ramirez. "Getting into the Puente program gave me a sense of belonging. I could say I belong at college, and I can do whatever I set my mind to."Mira Costa's Puente Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. This year they're expanding to let current Puente students volunteer at elementary schools around Oceanside and Vista. That helps them get public service hours they can put on a college application. It also helps inspire the next generation to see college as a possibility."It gives us hope that we're leaving behind something for them to build on," says Ramirez.Results of the Puente Program have been well documented. Between 2013 and 2016, Puente student enrollment at UC schools has increased by 59%. It started to replace real income with father Ken Reil even leaving his graphic design job and now working from home. Right now, their highest selling shirt can bring in anywhere from to a day. Mother Janalyn Reil is taking the opportunity to teach her kids a bigger lesson on finances. "It's a great life lesson for them to learn that so young and see that they can have their own business," she said. So what are they doing with the money? OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Edmond, Oklahoma teacher is offering free rides to teachers trying to get to the Capitol for the walkout."I couldn’t tell you how many people have been in this car," Troy Frieling said. "I have no idea. I’ve had children, administrators, support staff, just teachers in general."For the last eight days, Troy Frieling has shuttled people to and from the Capitol from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. He picks them up at their cars parked in neighborhoods a few miles away and drops them off just a few steps from the rally.Frieling is a teacher himself and so is his wife."Honestly I wanted to be able to serve the teachers," Frieling said. "I just didn’t feel like my time standing in line up there was going to help anything."He said he has picked up some of the same people day after day.A ride in Frieling's truck is completely free."They’ve asked me, 'Do you want donations?' and I’m like, 'No, it wouldn’t be a free ride if you gave me donations,'" he saidHe said he has found a few dollars left behind in his truck. The only thing he asks of his passengers is they sign a poster in his car. He's already filled up one poster and has hundreds on his second poster."It took five minutes off our day, but it’s also refreshing after such a long week and a half to continue to see the community being helpful and supportive," Randi Mahoney, a teacher at Ralph Downs in Ponca City, said.At the end of the day, Frieling brings them back to their cars.  1494

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside lifeguards are warning beachgoers of multiple shark sighting off Oceanside Pier Friday.Lifeguards said they received multiple reports of an unknown species of shark, measuring about 12 feet in length, about 100 yards offshore on the south side of the pier just after 12:30 p.m.Two rescue vessels and a drone were sent out to the shark's last reported location, but no shark was located.RELATED: What to do if a shark attacks at San Diego County beachesThe waters have been cleared for swimmers and surfers for about 1 mile north and 1 mile south of the area, according to lifeguards.Waters will remain open Saturday, barring any other reported sightings.While shark sightings are rare along San Diego County's coastline, lifeguards are asking beachgoers to keep an eye out.RELATED: Beacon's Beach in Encinitas reopens following shark attackA 13-year-old boy was attacked by what is believed to have been a great white shark in September off the coast of Encinitas, just south.Keane Hayes was attacked while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach.
