BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday told the country's Communist Party members to stick to the Party's principles and, with "a true heart," seek benefits for the people.Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Wen Jianming, a grassroots Party official known for his diligent work.Wen, born in 1963, is a Party secretary at Chengnan town in southwest China's Sichuan Province. He has been working in eight villages and towns and was praised by local residents for developing effective methods to boost local development.Further, after contracting cancer and undergoing 19 surgeries, Wen has remained at work."Party members across the country, especially Party leaders and cadres, should learn from Wen's unswerving belief, loyalty to the Party and his passion for working at the grassroots levels," said Xi.

Hu also met Prime Minister Jose Socrates and parliament speaker Jaime Gama. They reached important consensus on boosting the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.China and Portugal established the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2005. Bilateral relations have developed steadily in recent years.The leaders recalled developments of bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations 31 years ago, and outlined the blueprint for future bilateral ties and pragmatic cooperation. They exchanged views on major international and regional issues of common concern.The two sides signed cooperation agreements in culture, technology, tourism, electricity, telecommunications and finance.The presidents of the two countries agreed to make joint efforts to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership.Hu said China and Portugal need to make concerted efforts to further boost their five-year-old comprehensive strategic partnership against the backdrop of complex and volatile international situation.Hu made a four-point proposal, calling on the two sides to strengthen mutual political trust and strategic cooperation.He expressed confidence that Portugal will continue to play an active and important role in the development of China-European Union relations.Hu also called upon the two sides to shore up economic cooperation and try to double bilateral trade by 2015.Hu said the two sides should step up people-to-people exchanges and communication and cooperation in international affairs.Silva agreed with Hu's views, saying that the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in 2005 was a milestone in Portugal-China relations.Silva expressed his wishes for both sides to further tap potential in bilateral trade and investment and expand cooperation.He also spoke highly of China's crucial role in boosting world peace and development and its contributions to fighting the global financial crisis and promoting the recovery of the world economy.Portugal expects China to play a more important role in such issues as the reform of the international monetary system and climate change, said Silva.Portugal, taking advantage of its recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is willing to strengthen cooperation and coordination with China in coping with global challenges, he said.The Portuguese president also pledged his country's efforts to boost relations between Europe and China.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Minister of Finance and Economic Development Sufian Ahmed and a Chinese delegation led by Liu Liange, deputy president of Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank), on Monday discussed projects financed by the EximBank here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.The two sides exchanged ideas on ways of enhancing cooperation in infrastructure development and other sectors. Speaking at the discussion, Sufian said the two countries have been enjoying good relations in all sectors.He said China has forged good relations with the African continent in general and Ethiopia in particular."Particularly the relations between the two countries are increasing from time to time...We also thank the supporting hand of the Chinese government and the Chinese institutions. Exim Bank is one of the Chinese institutions we are working closely with," said Sufian.Liu Liange, on his part, said China has attached great importance to the China-Africa relations.He also said the state-owned China Eximbank would continue working in cooperation with Ethiopia.Sufian Ahmed told Xinhua after the discussion that they had fruitful talks with the Chinese delegation.He said they had agreed to further enhance cooperation between the two sides.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will carry out the House Sale Price Statistical Scheme in 2011, after soliciting opinions via the internet earlier this year, said Ma Jiantang, head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday.Ma made the remarks at a national statistics work conference, saying the bureau had accepted suggestions from various departments and experts and would work steadily reform the method of calculating the country's house sale prices in 2011."We'll further work with real estate departments, make full use of their network data, and check the authenticity of the data to further push forward the statistical scheme reform," Ma said.The NBS was committed to improve the scheme at the beginning of the year. It released the draft plan on September 25, which said prices, floor areas, and sales of newly-constructed houses in 35 major cities would be based upon data from local real estate departments, instead of independent research.Ma said that the bureau is working on 4 key systems, including building a database for basic surveyed units, one set of standards for surveyed enterprises, data collecting and processing software systems, and direct reporting network systems."The four systems are aimed to guarantee the authenticity, integrity and timeliness of the data," he said.By 2012, above-scale enterprises, above-norm wholesale and retail accommodations and catering businesses, construction enterprises, and real estate enterprises will be able to submit their data directly to a national data center, said the NBS.Also, about 550 cities across the country will use personal digital assistants (PDA) to collect data for the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, as well as farm produce prices, by the end of 2012, the NBS said.
