CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) - Twenty-nine migrants were processed at the Calexico Port of Entry after non-profits say they were separated from their children and deported.Sandra Cordero, Director at Families Belong Together, said 27 children ages 5 to 15 have been separated from their parents. Some for more than a year. Cordero said the parents came from Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.Together Rising and Al Otro Lado raised money to fly the parents to Tijuana. Cordero said they stayed in Tijuana for two weeks preparing to go to the Calexico Port of Entry. Cordero said they presented themselves Saturday morning and U.S. Customs and Border Protection told them the detention center was at capacity.While waiting, Cordero shared some of the parents' stories, "he was trying to prepare his son because he knew they would be separated but he couldn't find the words or the feeling of how he was going to tell him that," Speaking about a man named Jose from Guatemala. He stood beside her while she spoke and wiped away tears. After 10 hours, the parents were brought in to process their asylum requests."We just found out that they're going to accept five families at a time and they're letting them all in, so thank you thank you thank you," Amanda Doyle, Vice President of Together Rising, said tearfully."I think it was really us, our presence here, and the presence of all of our supporters online, calling tweeting, pressuring, we're so lucky to have all these supporters that made today happen," Cordero said.Cordero said they would be back Sunday to ensure the parents were being processed quickly so they may be connected with their U.S. sponsors and ultimately reunited with their children. Cordero said they have lawyers who know where the children are and going through procedures to ensure they can be released to their parents. 1879

Charlottesville, Virginia, is again bracing for journalists and protesters to converge on the city as jury selection begins Monday for the man accused of killing Heather Heyer at last year's Unite the Right rally.James Fields of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of plowing his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters during the August 2017 white nationalist gathering, killing Heyer and injuring several other people, police say.Heyer, 32, was a local paralegal and had attended the rally to speak out against white supremacy and racism. Her friends and families say she died for her beliefs.Fields stands charged with first-degree murder in Heyer's death. He also faces five counts of malicious wounding, three counts of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.Separately, he is charged with hate crimes in a 30-count federal indictment. Prosecutors in that case allege Fields espoused white supremacist ideals and denounced minorities on social media before traveling to Virginia for the rally. Once there, the indictment says, he drove his car into a crowd with the intention of hurting people he targeted based on his bigoted views.The 21-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. It's unclear whether he has entered a plea to the state charges, though a trial would not likely be necessary if he had pleaded guilty.His attorney, Denise Lunsford, did not return an email seeking comment. (KGTV) -- The desalination plant in Carlsbad is celebrating the production of 40-billion gallons of water since it opened three years ago.That's enough water to fill the Empire State Building 145 times. Or a billion bath tubs. The "watermark" being celebrated Thursday with a gathering of officials, including former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall and Poseidon CEO Carlos Riva. All sharing a toast with a glass of fresh water produced by the plant. Water so clean once it passes through the reverse osmosis system, say plant officials, they have to add mineral back into it. "The water molecule makes it through," says Poseidon Community Outreach Director Jessica Jones. "But the salt molecule -or any other impurities, viruses or bacteria- are too large. CHICAGO (KGTV) -- Police say three people were shot and one person is dead after a shooting at a Starbucks in Chicago Thursday night.According to ABC 7 in Chicago, the shooting happened in the city's Uptown neighborhood at 8:30 p.m. Police say a 12-year-old was transported to the hospital in unknown condition after being shot in the groin. An adult male was shot and took himself to the hospital. (KGTV) – The Legoland Hotel in Carlsbad is set to reopen before the theme park.Legoland California officials said the hotel, located on the same grounds as the Legoland theme park, will reopen to the public on Friday, July 17.With the reopening of the hotel, officials confirmed there will be numerous health and safety modifications in place such as social distancing practices and enhanced cleaning regimes.Legoland Hotel will operate in a reduced capacity, take cashless payments, and have a face coverings requirement for all guests three years of age and over. Hotel staff will also be required to don face coverings.Officials said those interested in staying at the hotel should book reservations online.The announcement of the hotel's reopening comes a week after officials said the Legoland theme park, which was shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, would not reopen prior to Aug. 1.A reopening date for the theme park has not yet been determined. 992
