SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Federal indictments were unsealed Thursday charging 75 people nationwide, 40 in San Diego, with involvement in an international money-laundering scheme.Prosecutors said those charged have been involved with crimes ranging from drug distribution to money laundering.Investigators seized more than million, 95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 63 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, 92 kilograms of cocaine, 252 kilograms of marijuana, and 20 firearms, including semiautomatic assault rifles and handguns.RELATED: Ex-MLB pitcher Esteban Loaiza now faces federal drug charge"We have siphoned the cash and the life out of a San Diego-based international money laundering organization with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said. "By following the money, we have discovered large quantities of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine that are no longer destined for the streets of America."According to the indictments, Jose Roberto Lopez-Albarran, described as a "significant" broker for a Mexican-based international money laundering group, laundered tens of millions of dollars in drug money from the U.S. to Mexico between 2015 and 2018.Lopez-Albarran, who was arrested in San Diego on Feb. 9 and remains in custody, reportedly oversaw a network of co-conspirators to assist in transferring the millions to drug suppliers across the border, including individuals working for the Sinaloa Cartel.RELATED: Alleged drug dealer charged in Camp Pendleton Marine's overdose death"Taking on and stopping transnational criminal organizations requires dedication and sacrifice," District Attorney Summer Stephan said. "As a result, this undercover operation has brought down high-level cartel associates and stopped the distribution of dangerous drugs like heroin and fentanyl in San Diego and cities across the U.S."In addition to Lopez-Albarran, another defendant, Manuel Reynoso Garcia, and his co-conspirators were also charged in San Diego last month for money siphoning.  2054

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Gusty Santa Ana winds and dry conditions prompted the National Weather Service to declare a Red Flag Warning for parts of San Diego County.A Fire Weather Watch was initially set to take effect Thursday, but NWS officials -- citing Santa Ana winds and low humidity -- updated the declaration into a Red Flag Warning. The warning is scheduled to take effect Thursday at 10 a.m. and will expire at 10 p.m. Friday. As a result, Cal Fire is increasing staffing this week. LATEST WEATHER FORECASTNWS officials said, “Santa Ana winds will develop Thursday with peak winds arriving Thursday night into Friday morning before gradually decreasing Friday afternoon and evening. A very dry air mass will spread into southern California on Thursday with lowest daytime humidity on Friday around 5 percent.”According to NWS officials, the Red Flag Warning will impact the San Diego region’s mountain and inland valleys.“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly with extreme fire behavior possible. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” according to the NWS.Cal Fire ads that there are some things you can do to help prevent fires. Check out the list below: 1181

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From the confrontation in a Los Angeles Trader Joe's to a showdown in a San Diego Starbucks, there have been a lot of customers claiming businesses can't legally require them to wear a mask. Some customers even carry a card threatening fines and citing the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. But there are three things to consider before making an ADA claim, according to lawyers.First, to bring a successful ADA lawsuit, attorneys say the person without a mask must truly have a disability. Businesses can ask if a person has a disability, but not much beyond that.RELATED: Confrontation over wearing a mask at Coronado coffee shop"You can't delve into someone's medical condition and ask them a bunch of questions," said attorney Colin Harrison. "I would not advise businesses to ask for any type of documentation."If the person says they have a disability, the ADA requires businesses to make reasonable accommodation. So what's reasonable?"A reasonable accommodation might be to ask the person to wear a face shield, which is about an inch and away and probably wouldn't restrict their ability to breathe," says attorney Steven Elia.RELATED: GoFundMe started for San Diego barista after woman posts about not wearing mask at StarbucksElia says other accommodations might include curbside pickup, but the ADA has limits: businesses don't have to fundamentally alter the way they operate."Customer says I don't want to wear a mask, I want you to deliver to my home. If the business doesn't already provide delivery service, that would be a major fundamental alteration of their business, one they would not be required to do," Harrison said. Both attorneys suggested businesses try to make accommodations first.RELATED: Feds warn of phony cards claiming face mask exemptionBut what happens if those accommodations won't work? There's a third component in the ADA: Subsection 36.208 allows businesses to turn disabled people away if they pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others."Someone not wearing a mask, they might think they're not infected, but they could be and pose a direct threat to spread the virus to many people," Elia said. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has said COVID-19 does constitute a direct threat, so our experts say the threat of a successful lawsuit in a case like this is low. That said, there's nothing stopping people from filing these lawsuits. There have been at least nine across the country. But businesses that win can pursue legal fees from the other party. 2548
