A campaign launched by South Dakota's Gov. Kristi Noem is grabbing attention for its slogan "Meth: We're on it."As part of the campaign, a video released on Monday features a number of people of differing ages and backgrounds saying "I'm on meth." Given the national attention the ad campaign has garnered, Noem's goal to bring attention to the issue appears to be working. "I allocated money for meth education and awareness," Noem said. "Right now, my team is accepting bids from media companies for a targeted meth awareness campaign. We need to be more active and intentional in teaching kids the danger of meth use and the affect it can have on their lives."The state also launched a website that includes information on where to find treatment centers and other resources to fight meth addiction. According to Noem's office, 13 people died from meth in 2018, and more than 3,000 were arrested for meth offenses. 929

The most popular museums in Washington, D.C. are now closed until a deal can be reached to end the government shutdown. Tourist Staci Jones flew to D.C. from Texas to see the African American Museum, the Smithsonian's newest and most popular museum. “It is frustrating that the one thing I wanted to do, I’m not gonna be able to do before I leave,” Jones says. Adonai Mahoungou came to D.C. from Mississippi and also wanted to see the museum.“I was really disappointed because I was getting ready to go to museums, have some fun,” says Mahoungou. “And to see that because of a government shutdown, disappointing, because I was ready! I was excited! Dang.” In addition to all Smithsonian museums being closed, the National Zoo is also closed, including the zoo's popular giant panda web cam. Outside of D.C., the shutdown is forcing some national parks to close because of health and safety concerns. Understaffed parks cannot keep up with overflowing toilets and trash cans. “It was kind of smelling bad down there, and I don't know how it's affecting the park with human waste and everything,” says Yosemite National Park visitor Katie Kensok. As more people start to feel the pain from the shutdown, President Trump and new Congress now face more pressure to come up with a solution. “Being from Texas, I don't work for the government. There are growing safety concerns about Boeing's best-selling plane, following a second crash involving the plane in less than five months. On Sunday, 157 people died, including 8 Americans, after a Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed in Ethiopia. In October, 189 died when the same kind of plane crashed into the sea off Indonesia. Investigators are now looking into the similarities. Both jets were Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and both flights crashed shortly after take-off. Pilots on both flights and tried returning to the airport prior to crashing. “Absolutely there are concerns, and the alarms should be and are going off all throughout the aviation industry,” says Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The crashes remain under investigation, and it's not known if any of the same factors contributed to either crash. But out of caution, China and Indonesia have grounded the planes. Some foreign airlines have also suspended the use of the planes. In the U.S., American and Southwest airlines both use the 737 Max 8 planes but are still flying them. “For as long as the airlines continue flying the planes, it's because they feel it's safe,” says aviation expert Seth Kaplan. “There's so much risk here. Not just for safety, but for their businesses.” Today, Boeing issued a statement saying, in part, "… based on the information available, we do not have any basis to issue new guidance to operators." Still, nervous fliers in the U.S. are sharing their concerns on social media about their fears of flying on the plane. “You cannot blame people for being concerned,” Kaplan says. “On the other hand, you do have a U.S. airline industry that's as safe as it's ever been.”Investigators recovered the black box and data recorders in the latest crash and hope to get early clues into what may have happened. 1854

A California man was arrested over the weekend after allegedly making a mass shooting threat to get out of going to a county fair with his parents, authorities said Saturday.According to the Pomona Police Department, Erik Villasenor emailed the Los Angeles County Fair staff on Friday afternoon and made false threats of violence.Pomona Police Chief Mike Olivieri said the email read, "Hello I was told that someone was planning on doing a mass shooting on Sunday at the fairgrounds. I just wanted to inform you guys already."The Sylmar, California, resident was suppose to go to the fair with his parents Sunday, Olivieri said at a press conference. Investigators believe he sent the threat in order to get out of going to the event with his family."Though he's 22, he felt it was appropriate to send this threat ... we believe it was with the intent it would spark some chaos and commotion, be captured on the media, and use it as an excuse to his parents to not go to the fair," Olivieri said at the Saturday press conference.Villasenor admitted it was a hoax when authorities tracked him down, police said."This is a great outcome for the fair and it really provided us an opportunity to test the kind of security systems we have worked so hard to create," said Miguel Santana, the president and CEO of Fairplex, the venue where the fair is held.Villasenor was arrested on a charge of making false threats and was booked at the Pomona County Jail. His bail is set at ,000.According to inmate information from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Villasenor has a court date set for Tuesday. 1617
