SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company is looking to capitalize on a new law that legalizes the growing of hemp in the United States. Medical Marijuana Inc., based in Sorrento Valley, already has a line of CBD products but has to import the raw hemp from outside the United States. That will soon change. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill. Inside the bi-partisan, 7 billion bill was a revision to the federal laws on hemp, which had largely outlawed commercial production since the 1930s. The bill also removed hemp from being classified as a schedule 1 drug, the DEA category for substances with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” “We really think this is going to be a tremendous growth market over the next three to five years,” said Stuart Titus, president and CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc. Founded in 2009, the company has several lines of CBD-based products for both humans and animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from California State University, San Marcos, shows San Diego County's craft beer industry continued its uphill climb last year.In 2018, San Diego County saw its craft brewing family grow to a total of 155 independent craft brewers, bringing the region to a total of 202 operating brewery locations, the report revealed. The study was compiled by CSUSM, the school's Office of Business Research and Analysis, and San Diego Brewers Guild.Data did show that brewery openings slowed starting in 2017, but have rose slightly since.The majority of breweries are packed into Central San Diego, hosting 55% of craft breweries in the county, the report says. The index surveys how respondents feel about barrelage production, distribution, employment, and capital expenditures.The report, adding that San Diego will soon see its own Museum of Beer in 2020, highlights the region's outlook for craft beer, breweries, and the industry's impact.When it comes to the style of beer drinkers prefer most, nationwide IPAs took 25.2% of the market, followed by belgain white (20.6%), other styles (14.5%), seasonal (13.6%), and lagers (11.1%). East Village's Monkey Paw Brewing and Miramar's Intergalactic Brewing closed their doors. Green Flash also sold off its west coast operations in a foreclosure. This year, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant closed in Mission Valley.The state, overall, though continues to be ranked as having the highest number of craft breweries in the U.S. with more than 900 breweries as of January 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was medevaced from a Carnival cruise ship Monday after a reported stroke. According to the Coast Guard, the rescue happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday roughly 45 miles northwest of San Diego. A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched to assist. Once on the scene, the Jayhawk crew lowered a rescue swimmer to the cruise ship to assess the 58-year-old man. The crew took the man to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla just after 9:20 p.m., according to the Coast Guard. The man is said to be in stable condition. 540

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly.She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721
