The 2020 hurricane season is already breaking records.Hurricane Isaias, which just passed through the Carolinas and the northeast, killing several people, was the season’s ninth named storm, making it the earliest in a year we have ever reached that number. It was also the fifth storm of the season to make landfall. It’s the fastest we’ve gotten to five land-falling storms since the old record set back in 1916."From a landfall perspective, this has already been a very, very active landfall season,” said Dr. Phil Klotzbach, from Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research Center. The group released its final predictions for the 2020 hurricane season on Wednesday, predicting above-average activity with 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes, five of them being major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or greater."Typically, we do one final update in early August to give you one final last best estimate to see what the season’s going to be like, and if we realized we really screwed things up until now, it’s one last shot at a mulligan,” Klotzbach explained. Before you say these records are just par for the course in 2020 there is a caveat. The 2020 season has not produced nearly the same amount of Accumulated Cyclone Energy, or ACE, as past years. For example, there were fewer named storms by this time in 2005, but the storms that did form in the Atlantic through the end of July of that year produced far more energy, including Hurricane Dennis, a Category 4, and Emily, a Category 5. That hurricane season went on to produce Hurricane Katrina, which battered New Orleans, and Hurricane Wilma, making it the worst hurricane season in recorded history.“Normally, a lot of storm activity in June and July doesn’t say much about how active the season is,” said Klotzbach.Klotzbach says the two big predictors of a hurricane season are ocean temperature in the deep tropics and wind shear, which is how wind direction changes at different levels of the atmosphere. This year, water in the Tropical Atlantic is the fourth warmest on record, meaning there is more fuel for hurricanes. July also had the second-lowest vertical wind sheer on record, meaning there is not much to cap a storm’s potential. It is why Klotzbach thinks once the peak of hurricane season arrives on August 20, we will have to make sure we are ready for whatever is thrown our way.“The primary reason why we’re forecasting such an active season isn’t as much the storm activity that we’ve already had, but the large-scale conditions we’ve observed during July and what we expect to see during the peak of the season,” said Klotzbach. 2638

Tens of thousands of children around the country will be getting a holiday puppy this year, but others will end up empty-handed and disappointed, ripped off by a puppy scam that has only gotten worse during the pandemic. So before you start looking for one, we have the warning signs a cute pup you find for sale is really a scam to steal your heart and your money.Penny Lloyd wanted to buy her kids a Yorkshire Terrier puppy -- a Yorkie -- for their home this Christmas."It was going to be a Christmas gift," she said. She found an ad on Facebook offering discount puppies."I saw this advertisement on Facebook, and I opened up the app and it said 'Yorkies for sale, half price, originally ,400 on sale for 0.'"It was a great price; so, she messaged the seller."I did, but I never got any response," Lloyd said. It's probably a good thing she never heard back, according to the Better Business Bureau, which says there is a good chance it was a scammer who would have asked for a deposit. That is what happened to Jo Standridge last year. She wired 0 via Western Union to a website -- now gone -- called Best Mini Shnauzers.com.That was the end of the seller, and of her puppy dreams."I tried to text him numerous times after that," she said. "Called him, couldn't get through. That was the end of the communications. Nothing."Puppy scam worsens during pandemicThe puppy scam has been around for more than five years, but the BBB says this year it's getting worse because so many people want either a "pandemic puppy" or a holiday puppy.Sara Kemerer of the Better Business Bureau said real puppy photos get reposted at counterfeit websites."It's very easy for scammers to steal a video or picture of a pet from the internet to make the pet seem real," she said. But the pups are always out of town, and the seller will ask hundreds of dollars for shipping and insurance.Once you wire them the money, they and their ad disappear. How to protect yourselfSo what can you do? Kemerer says ask for video of the seller with the pup. Ask them to hold it up in front of their phone."You can ask the breeder to do a video call using FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype to see if that pet is actually real," she said.Chances are Penny Lloyd's Yorkie seller would have refused, because he never had any puppies.Warning signs include:The dog is out of town, and you cannot see it in personThe breeder needs to ship it to youThe breeder needs money for shipping and insuranceThe seller will not take a credit card (where a fraudulent charge can be disputed)The seller cannot do a Zoom or Facetime video with you where he is holding the puppy (because he has no puppy)The best way to avoid a puppy scam is to shop local and avoid any puppy that has to be shipped to you.Or better yet, adopt an unwanted dog so you don't waste your money.__________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is \a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Teachers in the San Diego Unified School District say they may have to strike if they can't reach an agreement on a new contract with the district."It's not something we ever want to do," says Lindsay Burningham with the San Diego Education Association, the union that represents teachers. "But it's something that we will do if the district doesn't show the respect our students and educators deserve."Teachers first brought up the threat of a strike at this month's school board meeting, where they urged board members to hear their demands. The two sides have been in negotiations since June when the last contract expired. Since then, teachers in the district have been working without a contract. The final negotiating session between the two is scheduled for Thursday, March 22.For the new contract, they're asking the district to "LEARN."Lower Class Sizes 884

Stephanie Clifford, the porn star known as Stormy Daniels, discussed her alleged affair with Donald Trump during a May 2007 radio appearance, a well-known Florida radio personality told his listeners Friday.Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, known as Todd Clem before he legally changed his name in 1999, played portions of the interview on his radio show Friday and Monday, in which Daniels was asked to write down the names of famous men she had slept with. Clem says the first name on that list was Donald Trump. Although neither Daniels nor the host says Trump's name in the 2007 audio, she can be heard describing key details that match the description of her alleged affair with Trump.Clem said on his radio program that Daniels was talking about Trump, and later verified the same information to CNN. CNN independently corroborated the story with another person who was in Clem's studio that day, who would speak only on the condition of anonymity. That person also said Donald Trump's name was the first on Daniels' list. This would be the earliest known instance of Daniels publicly discussing the alleged affair.CNN obtained a full recording of Daniels' May 16, 2007, appearance, which matches the clips Clem played on air Friday.Michael Avenatti, a lawyer for Daniels, declined to comment and said Daniels would not be commenting.A spokesperson for the White House referred all questions to the President's outside lawyers. Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, did not return a request for comment. Cohen has said previously that Trump "vehemently denies" any affair.Cohen has admitted that he used 0,000 of his own money to pay Daniels.A lawsuit filed last week by Daniels says the money was part of a "Hush Agreement" to keep her from speaking publicly about an alleged affair with Trump. The lawsuit argues that the agreement is void because Trump never signed it.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters last week that the matter with Trump and Daniels has been put to rest, saying, "I can share that the arbitration was won in the President's favor. I would refer you to the President's outside counsel on any details beyond that."Clem told his listeners in January that he had removed the appearance from his archives, the website Bubba Army Radio, because he didn't want any unwanted attention in advance of an upcoming federal court case with Nielsen over alleged ratings tampering by Clem.Clem declined to be interviewed for this story, citing a pending civil matter, but provided CNN with a statement: "This interview happened in May 2007. I only asked the questions. Stormy answered them. I wish her and our President nothing but the very best. I don't think it's that big of a deal. We need to stop worrying about the past and focus on the future. President Trump is our President, regardless of who he slept with 12 plus years ago. The media and haters need to get over it."In the clips Clem played of the 2007 episode Friday, Daniels can be heard describing an affair she had with a wealthy man that took place in Nevada less than a year before her radio appearance. The details match with those in the lawsuit filed by Daniels last week. In that suit, Daniels alleged she had an "intimate relationship with Mr. Trump in the Summer of 2006 in Lake Tahoe and continued her relationship with Mr. Trump well into the year 2007.""Can you write down a name and we won't say it on air, for our own personal reasons," an unidentified co-host (not Clem) says to Daniels in the 2007 appearance. "We've done this before. We won't mention it on the air. We won't say any clues."When the name is shown, the hosts can be heard saying "no way" and "wow." An assistant of Daniels, identified by the name of Cheryl, can be heard verifying the affair happened when asked if it was true."Be careful on this one. Do not say a word," Clem can be heard saying, cautioning Daniels and his co-hosts to not speak the man's name.Daniels, when asked how long the affair took place, added that it lasted "less than a year."Later in the show, Clem plays short clips of Daniels responding to questions over the alleged affair. Daniels said the tryst took place in "Nevada, but not Vegas." At the prodding of the radio hosts she says it was in Lake Tahoe, which is where Daniels first encountered Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in 2006.She said she found it "horribly embarrassing" that this person was the best in bed of the three people on her list and added that the person contacted her "twice a month."She later added that there was no money exchanged."There was no exchange of money," said Clifford. "I'm sure if he had felt the need to graciously help me I would have put it in my purse." 4718
