SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist died Sunday in a head-on collision with a truck in the San Pasqual neighborhood, police said.The accident happened at 1:41 p.m. when a 65-year-old man riding a 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling east in the 18000 block of San Pasqual Valley Road crossed over the double yellow line and hit a 1997 Ford 250 driven by an 88-year-old man traveling west, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The motorcyclist died and the driver of the Ford and his passenger were taken to the hospital.Traffic Division is investigating the collision. 609

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Southwest High School student was detained today for displaying what initially appeared to be a firearm over his home computer during a remote-learning class, police reported.A staff member at the Hollister Street campus reported the potential threat shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.Patrol personnel went to the teen's nearby Nestor-area home and called him out, then took him into custody for questioning, Officer Scott Lockwood said.After the youth -- who turned out to be in possession of a BB gun, not a real firearm -- complained of shortness of breath, medics transported him to Rady Children's Hospital for an evaluation.The student, whose identity was withheld, was not expected to face any criminal charges over the incident but will undergo a psychiatric screening intended to determine the motivation for his actions, Lockwood said. 895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North Carolina man who raped and murdered a 79- year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, was convicted by a San Diego jury last month for the May 20, 1987, murder of Grace Hayden, who was strangled and smothered during the rape, according to Deputy District Attorney Valerie Summers. The prosecutor said Ford worked as a driver for older medical patients in San Diego and had driven Hayden two days before her body was found on the floor of her bedroom. DNA on the victim's body, as well as a fingerprint found on her stovetop led to Ford's 2018 arrest in North Carolina. Jurors deliberated for about five hours before convicting Ford of murder and special circumstance allegations of murder in the commission of rape and murder in the commission of a burglary. At Friday's sentencing, Ford addressed the court, saying he sympathized with Hayden and her family and couldn't imagine if something similar had befallen his mother or grandmother. ``I can't imagine what it's like, having to go through what Grace Hayden went through. It must have been a night of sheer terror,'' Ford said. “But the police got the wrong man. Whoever did this is either dead or still running around free. I didn't do it. God knows I didn't do it.'' San Diego County Superior Court Judge Louis R. Hanoian expressed his disappointment with Ford's denial of the crime, calling the killing ``despicable'' and ``heinous,'' prior to imposing the life without parole sentence. ``You have to be the most unlucky person on the planet, maybe the most unlucky person who has ever lived on this planet, to have supposedly engaged in consensual sexual intercourse with a 79-year-old invalid woman, left your biological material in her, and then within -- 12 hours? -- that woman is found dead as the result of a rape murder that you didn't do?'' Hanoian said. ``The jury didn't believe it. I didn't believe it. I don't believe it.'' Summers said the defendant told investigators he didn't know Hayden, then testified at trial that he had lied because he didn't want to get in trouble. He also wrote a letter to his wife stating he thought he might be arrested someday, but ``I didn't know how good their evidence was,'' according to Summers, who told the jury, ``Well, now he knows, as do you.'' Summers also called Ford's claim of consensual sex a ``ridiculous story,'' particularly given Hayden's mobility issues. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Italian restaurant in Encinitas agreed to pay ,800 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee who alleged her hours were substantially cut, and she was ultimately fired, after she told her employer she was expecting, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.After informing the owner in 2015 that she was expecting, the server was told that she "should stay home since she was pregnant, that her pregnancy had caused coverage problems, and that (the owner) would offer a position with less pay for more work so that she would not come back from her pregnancy leave," according to the complaint filed against Maurizio Trattoria Italiana LLC.She was fired in the summer of 2015, while less experienced servers were hired, according to the complaint.RELATED: Lawsuit aims to stop California's AB 5 from taking effect"Women should not be penalized for having children," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A power outage left nearly 3,200 homes and businesses without electrical service Thursday morning in Del Dios, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and San Pasqual.The blackout, which initially affected 3,173 utility customers, began shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric. By midday, repair crews had restored electrical service to all but 209 of the affected addresses, SDG&E advised. Those customers were back on line in the late afternoon.The cause of the outage was under investigation, according to the utility. 575
