(AP) — Authorities say an armed man who held off SWAT members for 10 hours surrendered after one of them sang him a Christmas carol.Nathaniel Lewis, of Chester County, Pennsylvania, was taken into custody in East Vincent Township early on Dec. 26.The Reading Eagle reports the 34-year-old Lewis allegedly fired at police officers who had responded when a concerned relative reported him acting erratically Christmas night.The shots hit a police vehicle, a house and another vehicle. Police returned fire.Eventually a negotiator got Lewis to agree to surrender after singing "White Christmas" to him.Lewis was charged with multiple counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other offenses. (KGTV) - A husband pleaded guilty Tuesday to trying to poison his wife with a heavy metal at their East County home, court officials said.Race Uto, 27, admitted to three counts of premeditated attempted murder in an El Cajon courtroom, according to San Diego County District Attorney's office spokesperson Tanya Sierra.Prosecutors said Uto gave his wife thallium, a metal found in rat poison and ant killers.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning case10News obtained a search warrant indicating Brigida Uto became mysteriously ill in September 2017. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant. Friends also indicated in a GoFundMe account she suffered nerve and organ damage.Investigators with the FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks. The warrant also showed that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy, and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race Uto was arrested in March 2018. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Mar. 14.Brigida Uto is a special education teacher in the Mountain Empire School District and the mother of a young boy, according to the GoFundMepage. EL CAJON, Calif., (KGTV) — The combination of good old fashioned police work and advancements in DNA science helped put an Oregon man behind bars after he killed a La Mesa man in 2006. Today, Hon. Judge Robert Amador announced Zachary Bunney's sentence: 12 years in a California prison for voluntary manslaughter. Before his sentence was announced, Bunney read an apology letter to the family of Scott Martinez. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the pain that this has caused the Martinez family. If I could go back in time and change the course of events that led to this, I would. I know that words cannot bring back to life, but I am truly sorry."Bunney referred to the night of June 27, 2006. La Mesa Police said Bunney went into 47-year-old Scott Martinez's apartment and used a sword to stab Martinez 30 times, killing him. For 12 years, Bunney evaded police, and the case went cold. Until this January, investigators linked the killer's DNA left on a bloody tissue paper, to Bunney's distant relative who was registered on a public genealogy database. "The defendant's DNA was uploaded into the system," Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson said. "A relative of his had uploaded her DNA, and then they do the family tree backwards, and they were able to trace it through that."Detectives discovered that the DNA on the bloody tissue belonged to Oregon resident Zachary Bunney. "I didn't think anything like this would be what cracked the case," Martinez's daughter, Angelina Panek said. By November, Bunney pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for dismissing the murder charge, his stipulated agreement was that he would get 12 years in state prison. "The amount of years that he was on the run, and this is the amount of years he is going to be given as a sentence. It was a sign. And I had to take it," Panek said. Panek said she will always wear her father's ashes in her special necklace, knowing that he is watching over her and her family. "I'm just grateful that this day has come. (KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody. (KGTV) -- New details emerged Monday in a warrant released after a man is accused of poisoning his wife.A search warrant revealed that the woman had been sick for months and had no idea what was going on with her.According to the warrant, the young mother began to feel sick in September, then started feeling better before her condition worsened in January.She suffered hair loss, no longer had the strength to walk or open a door and had to be helped around by family members and her extremities even became like dead weights, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wife with Thallium The warrant goes on to say that she suffered major loss of use of her extremities and was near death.Doctors determined that she received thallium poisoning by oral ingestion. Thallium is a chemical element used in rat poison and ant killers.Investigators determined that the poisoning could have only been done by someone with personal access to the food and drinks she consumed.According to the warrant, her husband Race Remington Uto, 27, had the most access to commit the crimes.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.The warrant shows the victim thought she may have been exposed to the poison while working in an old school building. 1661
