SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An advisory committee made up of medical experts met Thursday virtually and recommended that the FDA authorize the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use for Americans 16 and older.The vote was 17 to 4.Hospitals across the San Diego County are preparing their staff and most vulnerable patients for the rollout of the vaccine. They are in the first groups of people to be vaccinated.The county expects to get 28,275 doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week if it gets FDA approval. The initial shipment of doses is not likely enough to meet the large demand said Dr. Davey Smith, the Chief of infectious diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego Health."There probably won't be enough for the frontline workers, so we even triage between the frontline workers. So who has the most contact in terms of emergency room workers, nursing staff, those on the front desk, those are the people who should and will get it first, all across the institution," Smith saidThe vaccine is expected at a time when COVID-19 infections are on the rise, and ICUs are filling up."We have hospital beds available, and ICU beds available," Smith said. "If we hit 100 percent in one unit, we're going to open up something else. We have other outside facilities with tents. We thought through this, through every single scenario. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Advocates with the group Yes California aimed at splitting California Wednesday released a new plan that would establish the “autonomous Native American nation.”"The plan is to retrocede virtually all federally-owned properties in California back to its original occupants, the California Native Americans," part of a release reads. Earlier this year, advocates with the campaign began collecting signatures for the initiative.RELATED: 'Calexit' returns as advocates begin signature drive to succeed from U.S.The proposed initiative is the third Calexit proposal since the election of President Donald Trump. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University City man is hoping to warn others after someone with a BB gun shot him during his daily jog.On Tuesday, 70-year-old Taurone was nearing the end of his daily three-mile jog northbound on University Town Center Drive just after 6 p.m."Very calm, enjoying the evening. Hardly any traffic out in the neighborhood," said Taurone.On the sidewalk near the Renaissance Towne Center, his calm jog was suddenly interrupted by pain."Jogging along and felt a sharp sting in the lower portion or my chin, so I stopped. It felt like an extremely large pimple. I was pushing on it, and something round and hard came out of my skin fell onto the ground," said Taurone.A stunned Taurone, who didn't have his glasses, didn't look for the apparent BB pellet."When I realized I what it was, and that I had been shot, I was very angry," said Taurone.Taurone, who was shot on the right side of his face, believes the shot came from the shopping center area. He briefly scoured the area but didn't see anyone. Bleeding from his chin, he jogged home. He's doing fine now, but he's still upset."If the shot had been 6 to 8 inches higher, it would have hit me in the eye," said Taurone.Taurone has no clue about a motive, but he knows he was the intended target."Makes sense because I was the only moving target in the area," said Taurone.Taurone has been interviewed by police, who told him they haven't received reports of similar incidents in the area. He's now worried about what may happen next, because of the boldness of the attack. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amazon announced Tuesday it will create more than 200 new jobs in San Diego as part of a national expansion of its Tech Hubs.In a news release, company officials said plans are in place to expand offices in San Diego, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, New York, and Phoenix, which would lead to the potential addition of 3,500 new jobs.According to the company, there are more than 70 open tech and corporate roles in the San Diego area.With the addition of new tech and corporate jobs in San Diego, Amazon said it would add more than 40,000 square feet of office space near the UC San Diego campus.Some of the ventures being worked on at Amazon’s San Diego Tech Hub include games via Amazon Game Studios and a project that involves the launch of “Low Earth Orbit” satellites.Igor von Nyssen, Site Lead at the San Diego Tech Hub, said, “Amazon’s continued growth in our San Diego Tech Hub and the creation of these 200 new jobs is a testament to the strong and diverse pool of tech talent in this community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Air Force pilot killed during the Vietnam war will finally be laid to rest Saturday. Major Roy Knight Jr. died in action in 1967 when his plane was shot down over Laos. In the following decades there were multiple efforts to find his remains. It wasn’t until earlier this year that investigators discovered Knight and used dental records to identify him. “It is remarkable; I can’t believe it happened,” said his son Roy Knight III of Valley Center. Knight’s family had almost given up hope of seeing him buried. “There's a bunch of emotions that happen. First is just enormous gratitude for the people that went in and got him and that we as a nation continued to try to find him.” Thursday, Knight’s remains were taken from Laos to Dallas Love Field on a Southwest flight. In the cockpit was Knight’s oldest son, a Southwest pilot who saw his father leave for Vietnam at the same airport years ago. “We came up with the idea of what if would it be possible, and it required both tremendous effort on the part of the Air Force and Southwest Airlines to make it happen,” Knight said. Knight said his father was and always will be his hero. “The tremendous respect and honor shown my father, and and there's no doubt he earned that as does every one of our armed forces, especially our fallen.” Major Roy Knight Jr. will be buried in Weatherford, Texas. 1382
