VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A pregnant mother who fell sleep at the wheel early Saturday morning crashed into a Vista building, causing an hours-long gas leak.San Diego Sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on South Santa Fe Ave., near Civic Center Dr., at a Battery World store.A family of five was in the SUV that crashed after the driver, identified as a 30-year-old pregnant mother by deputies, told deputies she fell asleep before she lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone pole, and crashed into the building.A 40-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a 9-month-old girl were in the SUV at the time of the crash. The driver sustained a bruise to her forehead. No one was seriously injured, deputies said. The family was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.The crash caused a gas leak in the damaged building. SDG&E crews have since fixed the leak. The utility company said the leak did not expose the neighborhood to dangerous levels of gas, but nearby residents were able to smell the gas.No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.S. (KGTV) — A group of teachers with the Vista Unified School District rallied Thursday against the district's current reopening plan.The district's Board of Education voted late Thursday to finalize a plan to bring students and teachers back to in-person learning on Oct. 20. The group of teachers say there's now a chance they hold a vote over whether to vote of no confidence in the district's superintendent on Monday."We now face a rush to open without the protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of all stakeholders. School board members’ openly dismissive behavior toward educators and their safety concerns is hurtful and disappointing to every committed educator who calls VUSD their professional home," said Keri Avila, president of the Vista Teachers Association. "We are extremely disappointed in the lack of concern expressed at last night’s board meeting for the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff. We have scheduled and emergency executive board meeting to determine next steps."The board heard from parents and teachers on both sides. Some said they are for the full reopening, while others said bringing students back at normal capacity is too risky.Many teachers have expressed concerns that the plan just isn't safe enough during a pandemic."I think it's reckless, I think it's misguided," said Craig Parrot, an eighth-grade science teacher at Roosevelt Middle School. "There are entire schools in our district that don't have windows that open, kids are coming in without temperature checks."Parents that want to keep their students in virtual distance learning may do so.While many school districts have limited the number of students returning in-person, Vista Unified's website states, "It is important to note that while many health and safety precautions are in place for the Vista Classic learning model, all classrooms will have the normal amount of students enrolled. This means that while we will be following social distancing procedures, student seating arrangements will be less than six feet apart."Parrott said he was able to continue with distance learning because a colleague who teaches the same subject will return in-person. Walking into an emergency room near her home in Houston, Texas, Laurie Delgatto-Whitten knew the COVID-19 test she was there for would be far from pleasant, but little did she know the surprise bill she'd receive in the mail weeks later would prove to be almost as painful."It was a just a quick swab; it lasted maybe two minutes and that was it," she recalled.Delgatto-Whitten got her COVID-19 test on May 18 and eventually received her negative test results about 10 days later. Then, in early June, she got a statement in the mail from her insurance company. Her bill totaled ,165.92."I mean, I think it’s a total scam and in the midst of a pandemic, it’s even worse," she added.However, under the CARES Act passed by Congress, COVID-19 tests are legally mandated to be covered. Over the past few months, though, some Americans have discovered flaws in the legislation. Because Delgatto-Whitten had already met her deductible, she personally didn't owe any money. But it's the principle of her insurance company agreeing to pay that astronomical bill that causes her deep concern."In the long run any cost insurance companies are taking on, they’re going to pass onto you. They’re going to be passed on to me," she said.Healthcare advocate Michelle Johnson is concerned stories like Delgatto-Whitten’s will deter other Americans from getting tested at a time with the virus is still spreading rapidly across the country."If people think it’s going to cost money to go get a test they just won’t do it," Johnson said.Johnson's advice is to request an itemized bill for any COVID-19 related procedures you might undergo. (KGTV) — Two brothers are behind bars after deputies say they got into a road rage incident and robbed a driver in Vista.On Tuesday, just before 9:30 a.m. near the 1300 block of Melrose Way, San Diego Sheriff's Department says Matthew, 29, and John, 23, Giordano were driving in a lifted grey Silverado pick-up truck. Deputies say for some reason, Matthew became angry and began to follow another vehicle and displayed a weapon to the driver.At one point, the truck cut off the driver and came to a stop, deputies say.Deputies said Matthew got out of his truck and started punching the driver's side window. Once the driver opened the door, Matthew took about ,000 worth of jewelry and money from the driver, deputies added.During the confrontation, John used a metal tool to smash the driver's windshield and the windshield of a second car not involved in the original incident, deputies say. The brothers then drove off.One of the victims suffered minor injuries from broken glass.
