Northwestern Memorial Hospital near Chicago says it has successfully completed two life-saving double lung transplants on COVID-19 patients — the first known procedures on virus patients in the U.S.The procedures were conducted on a 28-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man earlier this summer.According to a press release from Northwestern Medicine, Mayra Ramirez arrived at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital with COVID-19 symptoms on April 26. Within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital, Ramirez was placed on a ventilator."From there, everything was a blur," Ramirez said.COVID-19 had "overrun" the paralegal's lungs, according to Dr. Beth Malsin at Northwestern Memorial."For many days, she was the sickest person in our COVID ICU and possibly the entire hospital," she said.Ramirez spent weeks in the COVID-19 ICU at the hospital, a time that she says she doesn't really remember."All I remember was being put to sleep as I was being intubated and then six weeks of complete nightmares," she told CNN. "Some of the nightmares consisted a lot of drowning, and I attribute that to not being able to breathe."By early June, doctors had decided that the virus had done irreversible damage to Ramirez's lungs, and only a transplant would save her life. After an urgent evaluation, she was placed on the transplant list.On June 5, Ramirez went through the life-saving procedure, just 48 hours after being listed on the transplant list.According to The New York Times, doctors are often extremely hesitant to perform lung transplants — patients must be sick enough to require new organs, but also healthy enough to be able to survive the procedure and rehab. As an otherwise healthy 28-year-old woman, Ramirez fit the qualifications.Ramirez was discharged from the hospital on July 8 — 71 days after she arrived at the hospital. She was the first COVID-19 patient in the United States to receive a double lung transplant.“People need to understand that COVID-19 is real. What happened to me can happen to you. So please, wear a mask and wash your hands. If not for you, then do it for others,” Ramirez said.Exactly one month after completing the first procedure, doctors at Northwestern Memorial performed a second double lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient. 62-year-old Brian Kuhns originally arrived at the hospital on March 18 after suffering from a severe cough.Prior to arriving at the hospital, Kuhns thought COVID-19 was "a hoax," according to his wife, Nancy."I assure you; Brian’s tune has now changed. COVID-19 is not a hoax. It almost killed my husband,” Nancy Kuhns said.Kuhns underwent surgery on July 5. According to the hospital, a typical double-lung transplant takes six or seven hours. Kuhns' surgery took 10 hours because COVID-19 resulted in lung necrosis and severe inflammation in the chest cavities.Kuhns was taken off a ventilator a day after the surgery, and the hospital says he continues to recover at an "optimal" pace."If my story can teach you one thing, it’s that COVID-19 isn’t a joke. NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Pasco County, Florida family is suing the Pasco County School Board alleging their son was shown pornographic videos on a school-issued iPad."It wasn't a personal cell phone. It wasn't a personal iPad. It was school equipment and the school internet," said the boy's mother, Jennifer Haag.The lawsuit claims two older male students showed Haag's son inappropriate videos during a free class period at River Ridge Middle School in New Port Richey. She said this continued for three months."It was considered a recess for the special needs children, all different ages for middle schoolers and they were just allowed to have free time," Haag said.The lawsuit states the incident happened in 2015 when the student was 11-years old. The lawsuit claims the student has suffered mental and emotional harm. The lawsuit also claims the iPads had "inadequate security features allowing students to access obscene and pornographic materials."Haag said her son told a teacher that students were viewing these videos."He finally got the courage to go to the adult that was supervising and try to tell him bad things were going on and he was told to 'stop being a tattle tale' and to go play," said Haag.Haag said she hopes school leaders pay better attention."I was absolutely devastated and heartbroken. And most of all, he really, really loves penguins.But Jacob has Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and doctors told his family in early October he probably only had a month to live.So they'll celebrate Christmas early this year, and Jacob wants people to celebrate with him by sending him cards, his mother, Michelle Simard told CNN."He got some cards from this Halloween, and he opened up and saw them and it was like getting a gift. He read it to us and had a big smile his face and his nose scrunched," Jacob's father, Roger Guay, told CNN in a phone interview. "He was excited to see what people had to say and it just brightened his day."Fighting a long battleJacob was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma when he was 5. According to the American Cancer Society, only half of children diagnosed with the disease reach the five-year survival mark.After Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on October 11, doctors discovered that the neuroblastoma had spread to his head and was incurable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his mother."People have called him an old soul and I believe it because he has taught us so much about life and about people," said Guay. "He's accomplished everything that he needed to do by 9 years old, and a lot of people don't accomplish that, ever."An early ChristmasArtinyan said the family decided to "fast-forward" Christmas to give Jacob one last celebration.And for him, that means a lot of snow, a decked-out tree, and of course, a real-life Santa Claus.But before his improvised Christmas celebration takes place in early November, Jacob asked for cards from anyone around the world who wanted to share his Christmas spirit.And only five days after he announced his wish, he has already received more than 100 cards from people all over the country -- and even beyond."We got over a hundred, and they're from all over the world. We have some from the Netherlands, from Australia, from Denmark," said Artinyan. "We've heard from all over the world at this point.
