BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Commander-in-chief of China's manned space program Chang Wanquan announced early Tuesday that the launch of Shenzhou-8 unmanned spacecraft is successful. The spacecraft was successfully sent into the designated orbit after the blastoff at 5:58 a.m. at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern desert area, carried by an upgraded Long March-2F rocket. It is heading to rendezvous with the Tiangong-1, or "Heavenly Palace-1" that was put into space on Sept. 29 for the country's first space docking. The docking, if successful, will pave the way for China to operate a permanent space station around 2020, and make the nation the world's third to do so.The launch was attended by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang. It was also observed by senior experts from the European Space Agency and the German Aerospace Center at the launch site. The docking will happen within two days after the launch of the Shenzhou-8 at a height of 343 km above Earth's surface. The spacecraft will return to Earth after two docking operations.
BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and former CEO, may be one of the great men who will still be influential after their deaths. The new biography of Steve Jobs is likely to be the top-selling book 2011 of Amazon.com Inc, an online book retailer, according to Amazon spokeswoman Brittany Turner Monday."It could very likely be our top-selling book of the year," Turner said in a statement cited by the Reuters.Steve Jobs, written by Walter Isaacson, former Time magazine managing editor, was landed on shelves in bookstores Monday. But its digital version was reported to be released late on Sunday on Apple's iBooks online store and Amazon's Kindle eBook store.Since its release, the biography, both electronic and physical versions, has performed very well in Amazon. It is the best-selling book on Amazon.com and the top-selling electronic book on the Kindle as well. According to the Reuters, Isaacson was asked by Jobs to consider writing a biography for Apple's former CEO in 2004, when Jobs was going to be operated on for pancreatic cancer. Then Isaacson had more than 40 exclusive interviews with Steve Jobs. WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced Thursday a joint, large-scale, national study of tobacco users to monitor and assess the behavioral and health impacts of new government tobacco regulations. The initiative is the first large-scale NIH/FDA collaboration on tobacco regulatory research since the U.S. Congress granted FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products in an act in 2009. Scientists at NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse and the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products will coordinate the effort."The launch of this study signals a major milestone in addressing one of the most significant public health burdens of the 21st century," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg in a statement. "The results will strengthen FDA's ability to fulfill our mission to make tobacco-related death and disease part of America's past and will further guide us in targeting the most effective actions to decrease the huge toll of tobacco use on our nation's health."Investigators will follow more than 40,000 users of tobacco- product and those at risk for tobacco use ages 12 and older. They will examine what makes people susceptible to tobacco use; evaluate use patterns and resulting health problems; study patterns of tobacco cessation and relapse in the era of tobacco regulation; evaluate the effects of regulatory changes on risk perceptions and other tobacco-related attitudes; and assess differences in attitudes, behaviors and key health outcomes in racial-ethnic, gender, and age subgroups."We are pleased to collaborate with the FDA on this study that may provide us with a better understanding of the impact of product regulation on tobacco prevention and cessation," said NIH Director Francis Collins. While smoking rates have dropped significantly since their peak in the 1960s, nearly 70 million Americans ages 12 and older were current users of tobacco products in 2010. As a result, death and disease caused by tobacco use is still a tremendous public health burden. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States. Cigarette smoking results in more than 443,000 premature deaths in the United States each year -- more than alcohol, illegal drug use, homicide, suicide, car accidents, and AIDS combined.
ATHENS, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The third Forum on the Development of Tibet concluded here on Friday after discussions on efforts to promote the world's understanding of Tibet and enhance the cooperation between China and the rest of the world with regards to Tibet's development. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation. During the two-day event, delegates from Greece, Britain, France, Germany, India and Nepal expressed their opinions on Tibet's modernization and put forward valuable advice and suggestions based on their own experience and research findings. Some of the foreign delegates have visited Tibet many times before. Narasimhan Ram, Editor-in-chief of The Hindu from India and Brendan O'Neill, editor of the British magazine Spiked spoke positively about the preferential polices and financial support of the Chinese central government and other parts of China for the region.During the Forum, Wang Chen, head of the Chinese State Council Information Office met with the Greek political leaders and journalists from mainstream media.People got an opportunity to learn more about China as Nyima Tsering, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region, introduced the development of Tibet and the Chinese government's policy towards the region.A number of Greek mainstream media covered the Forum.Over the past 60 years, Tibet has achieved a huge development in both its social structure and socio-economic development, said a communique released upon the end of the forum. It also foresees a great potential of cooperation with the international community in energy, environment, education and healthcare development for the region. The forum has facilitated better understanding of Tibet in the international community and will help to promote faster and better development of the autonomous region, the Communique said.
BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China cannot use its 3.2 trillion U.S. dollars in foreign exchange reserves to rescue other countries, a senior diplomat said on Friday."The argument that China should rescue Europe does not stand, as reserves are not managed that way," Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said at the Lanting forum, a gathering of Chinese officials, scholars and social groups held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss international issues and foreign policy."China is not absent from international efforts to rescue Europe; it has been a positive and healthy participant," Fu said.Since the outbreak of the European financial crisis, China has dispatched more than 30 procurement delegations to Europe, helping to boost imports from the continent, Fu said.Fu added that there are many misunderstandings about the use of China's foreign reserves. "Foreign reserves are not domestic income or money that can be disposed of by the premier or finance minister," she said."Foreign reserves are akin to savings, and their liquidity should be ensured," Fu said."Foreign reserves are not revenue and cannot be relocated randomly. Under this circumstance, China should take the prospect of yields into consideration if it invests its foreign reserves," said Tian Dewen, an analyst at the Institute of European Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. However, the outlook for the economic situation in the eurozone is currently uncertain, Tian said.Fu said China learned a lesson about the importance of foreign reserves during the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. ' "Reserves cannot be used domestically to alleviate poverty or taken abroad for development support," she said. She said that the way in which foreign reserves are managed should be in line with the principles of "safety, liquidity and proper profitability.""China's purchases of European bonds, International Monetary Fund bonds and U.S. bonds are also based on those principles," Fu said.Fu also said that China has no intention to gain profit by leveraging financial instruments."China will make efforts to overcome the crisis with Europe and the international community in the future," Fu said."As for the current turbulence in European markets, an authoritative voice is necessary in restoring market confidence. However, voices are diversified in Europe due to its political framework," said Chen Xin, an analyst at the Institute of European Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.Fu also reviewed achievements made in trade and investment cooperation between the two sides."It is normal for Europe to strengthen its economic cooperation with China in the process of conquering its difficulties, although it is not proper to add negative political implications," Fu said. She urged Europe not to politicize China's foreign investments."Successful investment should be reciprocal. We hope our economic activities are not interpreted from a political prospective and are not imbued with political interests. We should follow market economy principles," Fu saidFu also took time to single out media reports about the crisis that she believes have been overtly political."Many European countries have shown their understanding and support for us, but there have also been some negative reports," Fu said."We should treat each other with a moderate and impartial mentality. That will make bilateral relations easier to handle," Fu said. She cited an investment bid by a Chinese company in Iceland that was turned down by the country's government.Zhongkun, a private Chinese real estate company founded in 1995, planned to buy 300 square km of land in Iceland to build a high-end resort with a total investment of 200 million U.S. dollars. However, Iceland's Interior Ministry rejected the bid, citing the size of the area of land involved and the fact that there is no precedent in Iceland for foreign countries to purchase large tracts of land.
