California is still counting ballots more than three weeks after Election Day.The slow counting process has been underscored by a series of House races in California carrying on for days past November 6. Now, the only remaining uncalled US House race is in California's 21st Congressional District.There, Republican Rep. David Valadao trails Democratic challenger TJ Cox by 506 votes -- or about half a percentage point -- with votes still being counted. If Cox holds on to win, it would give Democrats a net pickup of 40 House seats this year.So why is the process so slow?California officials say the effort is built with a series of safeguards, many of which don't exist in other states. The bottom line: California's vote-counting process is built to take a long time."The philosophy here is, while it may take a little bit longer to finish counting ballots in California, the policies are in place to ensure that all votes can be properly processed and added to the tally -- and I guess better said, that all voices can be heard in the political process," California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a phone interview Wednesday.The state's laws give its voters, about two-thirds of whom cast their ballots by mail, more time to send in their ballots. As long as they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at county elections offices by Friday -- three days after the election -- they're counted.California also requires counties to give voters time to fix any issues with their ballots -- such as a missing signature -- and requires counties to contact those voters to inform them of any problems.When voters mail ballots to the wrong county, those counties are required to send them to the right one.The state allows same-day voter registration. It also allows those whose names do not appear on voter rolls due to clerical errors -- as Los Angeles County had in June, when a printing error left 118,000 names of registered voters off the rolls for the primary -- to cast provisional ballots that must then be checked out.Then, there's the reality that the state with the nation's largest population and 58 counties, with varying staffing levels, simply have more ballots to count.About 7.4 million ballots were counted on election night. But as of the end of election week, there were still 4.8 million mailed-in ballots left to count, the secretary of state's office said after surveying the counties.Padilla said there is a "sequencing" to the count -- with ballots mailed into the correct counties with no errors tallied quickly, and elections officials now "on the more time-consuming manual ballots to be processed."An end is coming, though. Two key deadlines loom: December 7, when counties must certify their election results, and December 14, when the secretary of state certifies the election.Any voter in California can request a recount but must foot the bill for it. The state doesn't have automatic recounts for close races.Padilla says he hears occasional frustration from voters that it takes so long to tally the results in California's closest races. (KGTV) – Legoland California officials say the Carlsbad theme park will not reopen to the public before Aug. 1.In a statement, officials said: “Considering the constantly changing Coronavirus situation and the recent announcement by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, LEGOLAND? California will not reopen prior to August 1, 2020. The Board announced there will be no reopenings approved prior to that date.”Officials also said a reopening date for the Legoland Hotel will be announced soon.Despite the park’s closure, the Sea Life aquarium is open for guests under state and county guidelines for aquariums.When Legoland California reopens, officials said it will be at reduced attendance and temperature checks for employees. She’s also considered high risk of contracting COVID-19.“Pneumonia is basically the number one cause of death for people with my condition.”Based on a report by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, White should be among those who get the novel coronavirus vaccine as soon as it’s available.“Ethics is the essence of this,” Dr. Eric Toner said.Dr. Toner is a Senior Scholar with Johns Hopkins. Who gets the vaccine first will ultimately be up to the Department of Health and Human Services, but Dr. Toner says the report is meant to offer an ethical framework to help prioritize who gets the vaccine and when.“First of all it’d be health care workers who are taking care of COVID-19 patients. That seems pretty straight forward and non-controversial,” Dr. Toner said.Also in the first tier would be people who are essential to the pandemic response – like those doing the vaccinating, people on the front lines of public health and people working in nursing homes.That first tier would also include the men and women who have helped maintain some normalcy during the pandemic.“Think of front-line transportation workers like bus drivers, think about people working grocery stores, people who work in food production, people who keep the lights on and the water running,” Dr. Toner said.White would be in tier one, but her medical situation is quite complicated.“I right now can’t get vaccines,” White said.She says the treatment she’s receiving heavily reduces her immune response so her body doesn’t attack itself. So depending on the type of vaccine, she would either develop COVID-19, or the vaccine wouldn’t do anything for her.“It’s a weird circumstance because I don’t think the world thinks a lot about people like us. They just think ‘oh the sick people are especially going to need this,’” White said.Dr. Toner says there is an alternative solution.“Vaccinate everyone around them. So vaccinate their families, their caregivers,” Dr. Toner said.“Clearly herd immunity can save an immeasurable number of lives. And so really for someone like me that really is my best shot,” White said.Getting enough people who have an immune response to the vaccine will depend on its effectiveness.“We are ensuring that the vaccine is safe and we’re ensuring that the vaccine is effective. And we will try to get it out as fast as we can, of course, but we won’t cut any corners,” Dr. Toner said.For now, White is choosing to focus on the positive."Hopefully the world will come out better because of this and empathic to their fellow man. (KGTV) - Wednesday kids tried out for the reboot of Kids Say the Darndest Things during a casting call at Legoland.Some families were selected as they entered or left Legoland, while other families sought out the try-outs.Representatives say hundreds of children were interviewed to see if they are a good fit for the national show, hosted by Tiffany Haddish.The kids, age 4-11, waited in a tent with their parents to be called in. "They come in and let it go and it is just the most hilarious thing ever," Casting Producer Cevin Middleton said. CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315
