SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Five people who witnessed a potentially deadly situation were honored by the California Highway Patrol Friday to taking action that helped save a man's life.Dennis McNea is a driver for the Freeway Service Patrol. His job is to help stranded motorists. But Nov. 13, 2019, he was driving on State Route 94 when he suffered a medical emergency. "Almost hit me," said witness Gina de la Torre, a Navy sailor who was on her way home at the time. "And as I saw him, he was hitting the highway barrier and I noticed that he was slumped over in his car."RELATED: Community helps man devoted to keeping park cleanAnother witness, Alberto Robles, used his own truck to make contact with McNea's, slowing them both down to a stop. The other four, including de la Torre, stopped to help. "They just kind of stopped and looked at me like, 'What do we do?'" she told 10News. "So that's when I was like, okay, keep calm and just do whatever you have to do."They performed CPR until medics arrived. "I don't remember what happened to me at all," McNea said. "I woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. "A million thanks is not enough. They gave me a lottery ticket. They gave me life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hate crime charges were filed Monday against the Little Italy man accused of attacking three Muslim women wearing hijabs. Kyle Allen, 50, pleaded not guilty to battery in a San Diego courtroom following the Oct. 6 incident. The women were walking on Columbia Street when Allen approached them from the other direction. Witnesses said Allen lunged his shoulder into them, tried to remove one woman's hijab, then hit one of the women. Passersby trailed Allen back to his high-rise apartment in Little Italy and called police. San Diego Police said Allen answered his front door while holding a handgun with a silencer. A total of 10 guns were found in Allen's home and seized, investigators said. Allen was arrested without incident.Protection orders are in place for the three women, keeping Allen from contacting them or coming within 100 yards.Allen will return to court Dec. 19 for a preliminary hearing. He faces up to four years, four months in prison if tried and convicted, according to the District Attorney's office. 1300

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices continue to soar in Southern California, rising nearly two cents more Monday. According to figures from AAA, the price for a gallon of gas gone up more than 50 cents in less than a month. AAA also says that the price has risen for 21 consecutive days and 27 of the last 28 days in San Diego County. California's gas tax is also set to increase by 5.6 cents on July 1, 2019. Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of gas Monday was .74.AAA says a series of refinery issues reduced gas supplies.Bloomberg Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles, and Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo plants all experienced shut downs and stalls in oil production due to various problems.
