SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego churches have an idea to help solve the housing crisis. They want to build affordable housing on their unused land.UPLIFT San Diego is leading the effort, called YIGBY (Yes in God's Back Yard)."There are 1,100 churches in San Diego County with over 3,000 acres of property," says UPLIFT leader Tom Theisen. "If just 10% of those churches, 100 churches, were to build 20-30 units each, we're talking thousands of units of housing."Theisen used to serve as the Board President of the San Diego Task Force on the Homeless. He's now spearheading the YIGBY effort for UPLIFT."I can't tell you how many faith communities have called me and asked what they can do to help," he says. "I have a hard time telling them to hand out blankets and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They want to do something that makes a difference, and housing makes a difference."Theisen says he already has 12 churches that want to build housing.One church that is already working to make the idea a reality is Clairemont Lutheran Church. They have a plan to build as many as 21 units on land that is currently part of their parking lot."Using our parking lot for something other than empty weeds growing seems like a good idea," says Pastor Jonathan Doolittle."We want something that works in the scale of our neighborhood, so our neighbors don't notice a huge change," he says. "But, we want it to be large enough to make a difference in the lives of those who need a place to live."Doolittle shared preliminary floor plans and renderings of the apartments. He says the church has been trying to get the project going for four years, but red tape keeps holding it up.One problem is changing zoning rules on the land. The other is parking regulations with the city.The plan would take 20 spots out of the parking lot. City law requires a certain number of parking spaces per church based on pew capacity. Without those 20 spots, the church would be under the legal requirement.Doolittle says his church only reaches capacity on major holidays. The rest of the year, those spots sit empty. He also pointed out that the church is on a transit corridor, and new city laws saw affordable housing is not required to have parking along transit corridors.UPLIFT has already met with Mayor Kevin Faulconer to discuss ways to ease those requirements on churches and other faith-based organizations that want to build affordable housing units. Theisen says churches would be more sensitive to concerns within the neighborhood than a private developer."These projects are self-sufficient," he says. "We can do as many of them as we have willing churches to work with us."UPLIFT hopes that a successful start to the YIGBY project will spur similar development. He thinks unused land owned by non-profit groups, health centers and even the City of San Diego could also be used for housing. 2888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area fire agencies are boosting staffing levels ahead of what may be the worst Santa Ana wind event this year. The intense weather situation, due to start Tuesday night and last through Thursday, has crews working extra shifts. Cal Fire San Diego has nearly all of its 500 firefighters on duty to staff equipment and fill support roles, an agency spokesperson said on behalf of Chief Tony Mecham. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsAlthough the agency is supporting other fires across California, the Regional Coordination Center in Riverside has limited the number of resources sent out of Southern California, Cal Fire reported. Cal Fire also brought 150 out-of-state fire engines to California. San Diego County has an additional 15 fire engines, five patrols, six water tenders, and support elements including a Cal Fire communications unit. The California Office of Emergency Services also announced Tuesday it was coordinating to pre-position fire equipment and personnel ahead of Santa Ana conditions. Two strike teams consisting of five engines are staged in San Diego County, along with a helicopter. The San Diego Fire-Rescue department said staffing would be increased Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. due to the wind event.Two firefighting helicopters are available around the clock, according to spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans now have even more problems they can report by the touch of a button.The city is continuing to add categories to its "Get it Done" smartphone app, which launched in 2016. The app originally allowed San Diegans to report stormwater and street issues, but currently has nine categories, including code enforcement, graffiti, and even passport appointments.The city says it gets 10,000 reports per month on the app.RELATED: San Diego battles illegally painted red curbsIn August, the city added features that allow people to report cars parked longer than 72 hours, illegal dumping, and HAZMAT related issues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced Wednesday that three more people died from complications from the flu bringing the county's death toll this season to 49.The deceased were described as an 84-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, and a 50-year-old woman from East County, according to County of San Diego Communications Office spokesperson Jose A. Alvarez.All three had underlying medical conditions.“Influenza activity in the region is still elevated. People should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The flu vaccine is safe and effective.”This season's death toll is far lower than last season. 307 San Diegans died from complications from the flu through this time last year.The number of people with influenza-like symptoms who showed up at local emergency departments went up one percentage point last week, reaching 6 percent again.The flu claimed the county's first young victim Feb. 20. A 14-year-old girl became the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego. The girl had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.The majority of cases have been of the H1N1 virus, the county says, which typically affects younger and middle-aged adults because they have not been exposed as much as older adults.County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions."Due to continued elevated influenza activity in the county, Wooten is extending—until April 30—the order for unvaccinated health care personnel to wear a mask while they’re in patient care areas.
