SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- According to a recently-released autopsy, a combination of cocaine, alcohol and blunt chest impact caused a man to die during a punching game in March downtown.The medical examiner ruled the death of 27-year-old Corey Poole an accident Monday. According to authorities, Poole went out drinking at Jolt’n Joe’s downtown just before 1 a.m. with friends.Police said Poole and one of his friends then decided to have a punching contest. Poole and his friend then started “consensually sparring” and punching one another in the chest.RELATED: Man killed in Gaslamp Quarter punching game identifiedIt was then, according to police, that Poole fell to the ground and became unresponsive. Poole was taken to the hospital where he later died.Poole’s friend was also taken to the hospital for chest pain following the incident. 850

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An evacuee who tested positive for the coronavirus in San Diego was mistakenly released back into quarantine because their test sample was mislabeled.Four evacuees were brought from MCAS Miramar to UC San Diego Medical Center and provided samples for testing within the last week. Three of those four samples were not labeled in compliance with the same regulations between UC San Diego Health and the CDC, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesperson.Because of this, when the samples were brought to the CDC in Atlanta, three of them were not immediately processed.RELATED: First case of coronavirus confirmed in San DiegoThe CDC says the team in Atlanta then reported that the samples tested negative, when three of those samples had not actually been tested.As those three patients were heading back to the base to finish out their 14-day quarantine orders, the mistake was discovered.
