HAWAII (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Hawaii Thursday afternoon.According to the USGS, the quake happened about 1:30 p.m., 11 miles south of Fern Acres on the Big Island.The earthquake was just one of hundreds of earthquakes that have swarmed the island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated that a volcanic eruption was possible but not imminent. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Pu?u ?ō?ō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.Since that collapse, about 250 earthquakes were reported in the area into Tuesday evening, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory status report.Check out the map below to see the area near where the earthquake hit: 931

HAYWARD, California (AP) — Robots that can flip burgers, make salads, and even bake bread are in growing demand as virus-wary kitchens try to put some distance between workers and customers. Starting this fall, the White Castle burger chain will test a robot arm that can cook french fries, corn dogs. The robot, dubbed Flippy, is made by Pasadena, California-based Miso Robotics. In June, Flippy began working full-day shifts - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at CaliBurger in Pasadena.“We have demonstrated that Flippy can work on our standard equipment and meet high volume demand with substantially greater cooking consistency than our kitchens that have not yet installed Flippy,” said Tony Lomelino, Chief Technology Officer of CaliBurger in a press release. “Additionally, we have developed a program to retrain our restaurant staff to serve as ‘Chef Techs’ that work alongside Flippy and monitor the related software and hardware systems. We expect these skills will be useful for employees across our chain to secure higher income jobs that require human/robotic interaction in the future restaurant industry and other industries.”Robot food service was a trend even before the coronavirus pandemic struck. The pre-travel testing program began Thursday and allows visitors who test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of their arrival in the islands to avoid quarantine — a measure that’s been in place for all arriving passengers for most of the year.The state-run testing program is an effort to stem the devastating downturn the pandemic has had on Hawaii’s tourism-based economy. However, gaps in the program coupled with increasing cases of COVID-19 across the U.S. and the world have raised questions about whether Hawaii is ready to safely welcome back vacationers.Opponents of the testing program have said a single test 72 hours before arrival — especially when coupled with the option to fly without a test and still quarantine — is not enough to keep island residents safe.Hawaii’s economy is almost entirely built around tourism and local families who rely on the sector to survive need to return to work. 1153
