SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is spreading its message of turning faith into action this weekend.They'll host a convention to teach other congregations ways to incorporate community service into their regular programming."We have thousands of people on the street every day, doing something in our community," says Pastor Miles McPherson. "It’s a great testament to the hearts of the people in our church."Rock Church says its members have completed 2.4 million hours of community service over the last 10 years, with an estimated economic value of million."It’s one thing for people to sit in a room and listen to a sermon, it’s another thing for people to go out and do it," says McPherson. "That’s why we call it a "Do Something Church."Leaders from 73 congregations across 13 states will be at the Do Something Conference this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is taking over the Chargers old practice facility, a source tells 10News.The official takeover happened Nov. 28. According to information obtained by Team 10, the facility will be repurposed and converted into a police facility housing several San Diego Police Department divisions and units.The facility has been used off and on since the Chargers left, the City of San Diego reports.In October, Team 10 discovered the utility and maintenance bills were piling up, even though the site was vacant.RELATED: Former Chargers practice facility still costing the City of San Diego moneyAccording to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.The San Diego Police Department occupied it Sept. 11, 2017 through Oct. 31, 2017, along with Jan. 31, 2018 and Feb. 19, 2018.San Diego State University also held a brief tenancy between Feb. 28, 2018 and March 14, 2018.Currently, there’s no word on when other departments will make the move to the Murphy Canyon location or what other plans the city has for it. 1290

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Threats from President Donald Trump to move forward with ICE raids aren't stopping a Barrio Logan organization from patrolling the streets and alerting the community when agents are in their neighborhoods. Union Del Barrio is a 38-year-old organization. In the last year, they started the community patrols to warn neighbors of their rights, if ICE shows up at their door. Benjamin Prado is a member of Union Del Barrio. He says volunteers patrol in Logan Heights, Barrio Logan, Shelltown, City Heights and Linda Vista. Prado says they never interfere with the ICE agents doing their job, only document what they see. The organization is also training volunteers in other cities, including Los Angeles. Prado says they feel ICE shouldn't exist at all and that these patrols are to challenge the administration, trying to stop them from terrorizing and separating their families with deportations. On Saturday, Trump said the administration would move forward with ICE raids "fairly soon". Late Sunday afternoon, the president also tweeted in response to a New York Times article saying in part "people should not be entering the country illegally" while also praising the work of Border Patrol and others in law enforcement. Trump also insisted the wall is being built. So far, no word from the administration as to when the deportations will start. 1378

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County Office of Education is bringing solutions to families without internet access to start the school year.The “digital divide” was already in place before the pandemic. With an increased reliance on distance learning and working from home, it’s only gotten worse.Before coronavirus, 1 in 5 students in San Diego County were under-connected or not connected at all.Chief Technology Officer, Terry Loftus, with the County Office of Education is working to help fix that.“If the parent had an Android phone, that qualifies as connectivity, but it’s not broadband and it doesn’t meet the needs of distance learning,” said Loftus.The COE is stepping up to the challenge of bridging the digital divide that plagued about 100,000 families.“Approximately 36,000 of those were South and East county,” said Loftus. “Or our districts that have people on the Free and Reduced Meal Program and haven’t had access in the past.”Many families can’t afford cable or wireless connections, or were forced to cut the cord after losing their jobs.Others live in more rural areas where that connection isn’t possible.So, they’re adding satellite solutions and distributing hotspot devices.“The 5,000 devices that are going out in the next week or two in that initial order, zero are being paid for by families,” said Loftus.There are also options for undocumented families and those who don’t want to share personal information to secure a connection.“To get that service without having to give details about their financial background, immigration status,” said Loftus.Most of the new connections are coming at no cost to parents or students thanks in-part to money from the CARES Act.The COE is also working with legislators on Senate Bill 1130 that would build new infrastructure in communities that need it.They’re in the process of surveying families to see who still needs connectivity as their programs are rolling out.
