We’ve been able to overcome that so that natural barriers of learning this virus, we’ve done already with its prior predecessors. The human barriers, we are overcoming that because a lot of the science community is coming together like we are all in this together. We gotta have a vaccine."Two vaccines are in the last phase of trials in Maryland right now. One is a first-of-its-kind RNA vaccine."It takes a fat deposit, this lipid nano molecule, and inside it has genetic material that when it gets into a human being, that genetic material gets into our cells and reproduces some of the proteins into our body that our immune system can identify and make a memory for," said Galiatsatos.The second is a more common vaccine, injecting a weakened virus to create an immune response.Galiatsatos said they still need to recruit 30,000 patients for these trials and then monitor them for 3-6 months before they can see if they are successful. They are looking for 4 things: if it’s effective with 1 to 2 shots; if it can help the targeted population; if it can cause antibodies to be made and if it can stop viral transmission to cause herd immunity."The best-case scenario is in a year from now we can talk about did it work, so we are in the late summer 2021. Then we can talk about making it publicly available," said Galiatsatos.So he said for the next year, acting based on what we know about COVID-19 is extremely important."To me, this is just a test of humanity. We’re better. We can all rise to the occasion and overcome this with the simple facts of knowing how this virus spreads and adapting ourselves to mitigate the spread of the virus," said Galiatsatos. (KGTV) -- A San Marcos man had to rush his small dog to the hospital after the animal was bitten by a rattlesnake that somehow managed to get into the home.Ross Margolin says he came home to feed his five dogs when he heard the dogs in the other room barking at something.When he walked into the kitchen, he says he heard the unmistakable rattle. Margolin quickly called a company that specialized in getting snakes out of the house.The man who came to collect the rattlesnake was able to quickly get the two and a half foot long reptile out of the home. Margolin says he later noticed one of his dogs was bitten by the snake.Fortunately, Margolin says his dog quickly recovered after being rushed to the animal hospital for treatment. Margolin says the snake was able to get into the home through an open sliding door.  857

SAN YSIDRO (KGTV)-- Activists for deported veterans are concerned as US Customs and Border Patrol agents call artists, asking them to paint over their work.On the Mexico side of Friendship Park, inside Friendship Circle, an upside-down American flag with white crosses for stars, stands as a reminder, bringing awareness to deported veterans and the difficulty they face."It's like an SOS in the military if you're being overrun by the enemy, and part of that was you know, we need help," Advocate Hector Barajas said."I think veterans should do their time, or should receive some kind of treatment instead of getting deported, you know if you get in trouble," he said. Barajas said the veterans who were deported were convicted of a crime and not citizens of the U.S. Back in the days of the Vietnam War, Barajas said the U.S. took anyone who was willing to fight.In Tijuana, Barajas not only co-founded the mural in 2013, he's helped 375 deported veterans in Mexico, from 40 different countries. His shelter and resource center, Deported Veterans Support House, provides food, clothing and shelter, as they transition to life in Mexico.Barajas?was a deported veteran himself, and seeing that flag gave him hope.On the other side of the flag are names of deported veterans, some have "RIP" painted next to their names.Instead of stars, the flag has white crosses. "The crosses of people who made the sacrifice for others to seek the American dream but we've also had others who have died on this side of the border," Barajas said.That part of the mural is what US Customs and Border Patrol is focusing on, according to Barajas, "they asked me if I could paint it to paint away the stars so it didn't look like an American flag."US Customs and Border Patrol released this statement:Barajas told the agent he doesn't maintain the mural and washed his hands of the issue. (KGTV) - Doorbell camera video of a coyote following a man on a dog walk in Santee may be another example of coyotes becoming more aggressive in the area.On Monday after 9 p.m. on a quiet residential street, Ring doorbell camera video captures a man walking his dog. Moments later, something emerges from the shadows. It a coyote, and it's in an hurry. The video posted on the Ring app is titled "Beware coyote chasing a man with dog." That's exactly what appears to be happening. In the video, the coyote runs down the street before cutting in the man's direction. It's not clear if the coyote did catch up to the man or dog.Last week, 10News reported on Michelle Cimmarrusti's morning walk with Presley, an 8-year-old Silky Terrier. It unfolded on Palm Glen Drive, about a half mile from the site of the newest video. Two coyotes emerged from a bush and attacking Presley, while he was on his leash. Presley lunged, snapping his collar. He and the coyotes would end in a condo complex, where Presley was killed.Presley was the second dog killed by a coyote in the neighborhood in the last few weeks. Experts say coyotes attacking a leashed dog is a sign they're getting more aggressive in an area, and less afraid of humans, whether is food scarcity or the unintentional feeding of coyotes. 1315

SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV) – The first case of coronavirus with unknown origin has been confirmed in Northern California. The resident hasn’t traveled overseas since the outbreak began, the CDC said Wednesday. It’s unknown how the patient got the virus. "At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown. It's possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States. Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown," the agency said in a statement.
