BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (BOC) plans to issue new Hong Kong-listed H shares, about 20 percent of its current H shares, as soon as possible, said BOC Board Chairman Xiao Gang Thursday.But the BOC had to wait for approvals from shareholders and securities regulators on the mainland and in Hong Kong, Xiao said.The BOC, China's third largest bank by market value, in January declared it would sell no more than 40 billion yuan (5.86 billion U.S. dollars) of bonds convertible to A shares to improve capital adequacy.The BOC currently had no acquisition plans in China or overseas, Xiao said.The biggest credit risks lied in the local governments' financing units and the BOC was tightening loans to these units, he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- China has seen progress in the development of the law profession as it strives to build a country based on the rule of law.According to the Ministry of Justice, the country had more than 15,000 law firms, more than 166,000 lawyers, and more than 220,000 people working in the sector at the end of 2009.By Oct. 2009, foreign law firms from 21 countries had set up 224 representatives offices in China, while law firms from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region had set up 65 offices on the mainland, the ministry said.Sixteen lawyers are deputies in the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and 22 lawyers are members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the nation's top political advisory body.Last year, the country's lawyers handled nearly 2 million lawsuits, and dealt with more than 534,000 non-litigious legal matters, plus more than 184,000 cases of legal aid.Statistics show in 2008, lawyers billed their clients 30.9 billion yuan (4.54 billion U.S. dollars) and paid more than 4 billion yuan in taxes.No corresponding figures for the year of 2009 are available.

BEIJING, March. 4 (Xinhua) -- Anti-corruption authorities of the Chinese government and the Communist Party of China (CPC) have been ordered to make sweeping investigations of all major state-funded construction projects begun since 2008.The order was issued at a conference on Thursday on cleaning up the construction sector in 2010.The investigations would cover the bidding and tendering processes, land use rights, construction quality and transparency of the entire process, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the CPC's anti-graft body, at the meeting.He, also head of the national team to stop corruption in construction projects, said 2010 would be a crucial year in stepping up the fight against corruption and misconduct in the construction sector.He warned anti-corruption authorities to take the investigations seriously."Those who are merely going through the motions will be held accountable," He said, according to a statement issued after the conference.The fight against corruption and misconduct in the construction sector would contribute to steady and relatively fast economic growth, he said.Since the initiation of a nationwide two-year campaign against the corruption and misconduct in construction sector in July last year, the country's discipline inspection authorities had investigated 5,803 cases linked to the construction sector, and had penalized 3,374 people, said the statement.
