Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Jon Klassen recalls a moment that occurred around 2 a.m.—just a few hours after the gunfire ceased at the Route 91 Music Festival.  He calls it “one of the most meaningful, symbolic things” he has ever seen in 30 years in the business.Klassen was working with other paramedics and a crime scene investigator, combing through the grisly aftermath of the concert grounds, helping to confirm fatalities when one woman in particular stood out.“She just was so beautiful and peaceful,” Klassen recalls. “And quiet.”He said it almost just looked like she was laying there, watching TV, when he noticed something around her eye.“Just one tear drop,” he said, still sounding like he has trouble believing what he saw. He remembers reacting to it and just thinking, “me too.”“I am so with you, dear.”Klassen would soon learn that this woman, one of the 58 victims whose lives were cut short by a gunman perched in a hotel room, was 46-year-old Lisa Patterson. A wife. A mother of three.Her husband, Robert, went through a 22-hour ordeal to track down his wife, as detailed in a heart-wrenching account in a local newspaper.Upon hearing word that this deputy fire chief had something he would like to share if it’s something Lisa’s family would want to hear, Robert contacted Klassen.“We had a great conversation. And it was comforting and closing and cathartic for him. And I was able to tell this 16-year-old kid, ‘Your mom was beautiful, and peaceful and quiet.’”The two have spent some time together since that initial phone conversation, and Klassen now considers Bob Patterson a friend.Despite the fact that it has been four weeks since the attack, very little information has come to light and many questions remain, including the timing of when security guard Jesus Campos, the first to arrive at the gunman’s room, arrived on scene. Authorities have offered varying accounts in the weeks since. There is also still no word on a motive.But none of that frustrates Klassen. Countless times, every day across the country, dispatchers field calls for help that can be hard to answer.In Eugene, Oregon, sometimes the answer is people like Dan Felts.“Sometimes, what we need in our most desperate hour is somebody to talk to,” Felts said.In Eugene and its neighboring city of Springfield, when a non-emergency, non-criminal call comes in through 911 or a non-emergency line to a dispatcher, they can send a mental health professional like Felts, instead of police.“Make sure people have access to resources, other than law enforcement, when they’re having mental health crisis,” Felts explained.Felts is a member of CAHOOTS, which stands for Crisis Assistance Helping out on the Streets."We don’t show up with weaponry, we don’t show up with handcuffs,” Felts said.The belief is unarmed CAHOOTS teams of crisis workers and medics can be a better response to people struggling with issues like mental health or emotional crisis."When a police officer goes and they look like me, gun, badge, you know it’s a little demonstrative and sometimes it has the tendency to escalate the situation,” said Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner. "When somebody like CAHOOTS goes, it’s people who are kind of dressed the same and look the same. They just have a softer approach, and it tends to deescalate things."“There are lots of these kind of call types that are non-violent in nature; they’re simply somebody crying out for help,” says Ben Brubaker, director at White Bird Clinic.The clinic is a non-profit that provides an array of services like counseling, dental care, and other services to people in need in the Eugene area. It’s run CAHOOTS since the late 80s. Brubaker says communities are now calling White Bird for guidance on putting similar programs to CAHOOTS in place.Denver, Colorado launched a pilot program last month.“We need to change the way our public safety work and see how public safety looks through a different lens,” Brubaker said.It’s a viewpoint of listening to voices they believe across the country haven’t been heard enough.“We show up to bear witness, see you as a human being, and offer whatever kind of support we can without judgement,” Felts said. 2199

Claims that U.S. voter registration rolls have been hacked and leaked are false and were created by malicious actors trying to spread disinformation ahead of the 2020 election, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said Monday.In a press release published on the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, the agencies said they have "no information suggesting any cyberattack on U.S. election infrastructure," and added that registration rolls or any ballots already cast have not been compromised.The FBI says foreign actors and cybercriminals are spreading false reports about cyberattacks affecting election integrity in "an attempt to manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions."According to the press release, U.S. voter information is publicly available and can be purchased, and while hackers have obtained some of that information in the past, the data "did not impact the voting process or the integrity of election results."Ahead of the 2016 election, Russia used social media to create politically-oriented groups and spread misinformation. The FBI has warned that Russia and other countries are attempting to do the same thing in 2020.In order to avoid misinformation online, the FBI suggests:Seeking out information from trustworthy sources, verifying who produced the content, and considering their intent.Relying on state and local election officials for information about voter registration databases and voting systems.Viewing early, unverified claims with a healthy dose of skepticism.Verifying through multiple reliable sources any reports about compromises of voter information or voting systems, and consider searching for other reliable sources before sharing such information via social media or other avenues.Reporting potential election crimes — such as disinformation about the manner, time, or place of voting — to the FBI.Making use of in-platform tools offered by social media companies for reporting suspicious posts that appear to be spreading false or inconsistent information about voter information or voting systems. 2164

CLEVELAND - This story proves just about anyone can get scammed. A man from Oberlin, Ohio said even though he's an experienced buyer and seller of cars online, criminals got him."You never thought you'd be a victim of a scam like this,” we asked Derrick Macarthy. “Never,” Macarthy told us.He isn't some dumb guy who fell for a scam. “The eBay Motors page looked official,” he remembered.Macarthy was looking for a van, found one on Craigslist. It was 00 and to him that’s a lot of money. "I don't have 00 to just throw away," he told us.The seller sent him a note saying the husband supposedly died 5 months ago. "They told me they had just moved to another state and that they were dealing with eBay Motors," said Macarthy.He wasn't familiar with eBay Motors, but he went to Rite Aid anyway. He bought a half-dozen eBay gift cards and gave the crooks the numbers. Then, he even got a message from them saying "I'm sure you will love this car...take good care of it…I loved this car very much.""They're good, huh?” we asked.“They are. So, buyers beware," Macarthy replied.Beware because Macarthy got another message 30 minutes later saying they needed a thousand dollars more to ship the car to him. Macarthy knew, though, the ad said no shipping fee. So, the red flags went up and called eBay."When you hear, 'You've been scammed,' what goes through your mind?” we asked him.“I just hit the floor,” said Macarthy. He was devastated. He has a family that needs a van. Plus, he never suspected anything because he's bought and sold cars with honest people on Craigslist in the past. "I put the ad on there. (Buyers) responded. Money, title, and keys were exchanged and everybody was happy. (That’s) not how it happened this time."Macarthy said he went to local police but they don't have the resources to track down the scammers who stole his money. "I wish there was some way to get that back,” he told us.eBay Motors has a big warning that even highlights Craigslist for scams like this. The examples include scammers using eBay gift cards.The Better Business Bureau also has warnings and advice.Macarthy has his own suggestions for you. "Things can look very, very real and be the total opposite. So, just be careful."eBay Motors suggests you tell the seller that you'll pay when you pick up the car. And watch out for sellers wanting quick payments through gift cards, wire transfers, or re-loadable money cards.  2436
