Top USA Swimming officials are under fire for what critics say was a culture of sexual abuse that was allowed to persist for decades unchecked.A stunning new investigative report first published in the Orange County Register found that since 1997, more than 250 coaches and officials were either arrested, charged or disciplined by USA Swimming for sexual abuse or misconduct.The paper -- citing, documents, interviews with abuse survivors, former Olympians, USA Swimming officials and others -- claims that there are at least 590 victims. Times Square was a hive of activity Tuesday afternoon, as more than 40,000 bees swarmed a hot dog stand at the corner of Broadway and West 43rd Street.Known as an absconded hive, the bees were looking for a new home to escape the sweltering heat, said Officer Darren Mays, one of the New York Police Department's two official beekeepers."The hive got overcrowded because it was hot and humid and they just needed a new place to go so they can keep cool," Mays said. He also runs the official NYPD Bees Twitter account, which was buzzing with likes and retweets as many New Yorkers learned that their police force had beekeepers on staff.Mays said the bees likely went looking for a new home after leaving one of the rooftop hives of a nearby building.Second-beekeeper-in-command, Officer Michael Lauriano, responded to the scene in full protective gear, including a netted bee helmet. It took Lauriano 45 minutes to carefully vacuum the bees. The street was cordoned off and no injuries were reported, according to the NYPD.Mays confirmed the bees have been safely stored in a hive box and are being transported by police van to an apiary on Long Island."Unfortunately, they won't be able to make any honey this season," said Mays, explaining that they will have to be well fed to make it through the winter.Mays, who has served since 2014 as the NYPD's beekeeper in addition to his regular duties, said this has been one of the slowest bee seasons in recent years. TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted six men on charges of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.In October, the men were arrested in what authorities describe as a plot by anti-government extremists angry over the Democratic governor's policies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced in a statement that the indictment was handed down Wednesday.According to an indictment released Thursday, Adam Fox, Brandon Caserta, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, and Daniel Harris, all of Michigan, and Barry Croft of Delaware, allegedly began to plan the kidnapping last summer.According to the indictment, they allegedly conducted surveillance of Whitmer's rural vacation home and practicing the use of firearms and explosives.On August 23, Garbin, Franks, and Caserta met up with Harris near his residence in Lake Orion, Michigan, to examine each other’s identification documents to make sure they weren't undercover law enforcement agents or informants, according to the affidavit.WXYZ reports that federal agents were infiltrated among the group as either confidential informants and undercover FBI agents.According to the indictment, Fox ordered ,000 worth of explosives from an undercover agent in September.Fox also ordered a taser in October, WXYZ reported. Fox was also photographed at the governor's summer home drawing a map of the property.According to WXYZ, Fox, Garbin, Franks, and Harris were arrested after showing up in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to pay the undercover FBI agent posing as a co-conspirator for the explosives. They're called the religious nones--a diverse group made up of atheists, agnostics, the spiritual, and those with no specific organized religion in particular. And over the years, this population has continued to grow, with millennials increasingly driving the growth. "I think many of us are finding connections in spirituality in ways that for our parents would seem quite odd, but for us, feel more relevant and feel more authentic," said Jill Filipovic, a columnist and author of the book OK Boomer, Let's Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind.A millennial herself, Filipovic considers herself a part of this growing trend."I don't affiliate formally with any of these religious beliefs. I would qualify myself as religious none, even though I'm culturally Christian," said Filipovic. The Pew Research Center found just 27 percent of millennials say they attend religious services on a weekly basis, compared to 38 percent of baby boomers. And only about half of millennials--adults born between 1981 and 1996--say they believe in God with absolute certainty, and only about 1 in 10 millennials say religion is very important in their lives."Millennials, as I said, are relatively progressive people, and the Catholic Church is a formal patriarchy. It's an organization in which women are formally barred from being in positions of power," said Filipovic. The Pew Research Center says religious nones are growing faster among Democrats than Republicans, though their ranks are swelling in both partisan coalitions.But while less religious, millennials are still likely to engage in spiritual practices."It doesn't surprise me to see spirituality on the rise; it's such a key part of the human condition to want to understand why am I here, what is my purpose."The trends are not going unnoticed by religious institutions like the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, which created the Young Adult Ministry to connect young adults to the Catholic Church."That's where we start to cultivate relationships and just bring us all the baggage, bring us all the stuff that you have questions about, and let's just talk about it," said Patrick Rivera, director of Young Adult Ministries.Rivera says before the pandemic, they would hold social events that don't necessarily feel religious."We have Theology on Tap, where we'll go to a bar or a parish hall, we'll bring in our own kegs and speakers and live musicians and have a theological discussion," said Rivera.He says the effort has been a sort of rebranding of the church. "One of the hardest parts for me in the last few years has been the rise of different scandals and things that have come up," said Rivera.Through conversation and social events, he says they're working to connect with marginalized groups like the LGBTQ community, who've historically felt ostracized from the church."That's the issue we want to try and resolve. It doesn't necessarily matter how you enter into faith or community, the community is still there longing to accept you as you are," said Rivera. "Definitely LGBT community is an area that we seek to try to mend some of the damages we've seen done across the previous generation or so from the church."A young adult ministry coordinator, Daniel Godinez, was 27 when he reconnected with the Catholic church."I didn't have the right friendships, I didn't have the right connections, it all came down to a moment of emptiness in my life," said Godinez.Despite having a great job and friends, he says life's pleasures were not fulfilling him. In 2012, an old friend invited him to a church retreat, which Godinez believes was God calling him back home. "It was absolutely tough, not having support from your friends at that moment when you're going through that transition process, I think is probably the toughest thing you can encounter at that moment in life," said Godinez.Godinez is now the Young Adult Ministry Coordinator at Most Precious Blood in Chula Vista and married to a woman he met through the church.Rivera says COVID-19 has impacted the church's ability to reach new people; rather than large gatherings, they must rely on small events to continue outreach. However, Rivera says it's allowed them more opportunities to focus on the one-on-one small-scale relationship model."It's one person at a time for us," said Rivera. 4331

There have been plenty of presidential elections when Nebraska hasn't cross too many minds. After all, it's a relatively conservative state where President Donald Trump won by 25 points in 2016. But this election, Democrats aren't forgetting about Nebraska, or more specifically, Omaha. DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY Nebraska and Maine are the two states that award their Electoral College votes based off results in individual congressional districts. For instance, in 2008, John McCain and Barack Obama both received Electoral College votes from Nebraska. In Nebraska, two Electoral College votes goes to the statewide winner and one Electoral College vote goes to the winner in each of the state's three congressional districts. A total of five Electoral College votes is at stake. While Trump will again carry the statewide vote and two of the state's congressional districts, it is unclear what will happen in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha, Nebraska. Democrats believe there is a chance. "For whatever the reason, there are a lot of Democrats and independents saying they are going to vote for Biden," Bob Kerrey, the former Democratic governor and U.S. Senator from Nebraska, said. Republicans aren't conceding by any stretch, although they acknowledge it will be close. "We have more people than ever with boots on the ground knocking on doors," Theresa Thibodeau, chair of the Douglas County GOP, which includes Omaha, said. HOW IT COULD COME DOWN TO OMAHA If the election is close, there is a scenario where it all comes down to Omaha. If the projections in most states hold true -- and Trump wins the swing states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania & one congressional district in Maine and Joe Biden wins the battleground states of Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin -- how Omaha votes could decide the election. DEMOCRATS VS REPUBLICANS Of course Republicans in Nebraska don't particularly like the way in which their state allocates votes. "We should move our state back to a winner takes all," Thibodeau said. Former Senator Kerrey, obviously, disagrees.
