SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Homicide detectives Friday were investigating the death of a man who was found unconscious in a Midway District parking lot.Dispatchers received a call around 10 p.m. Thursday from a person who reported finding the man in a parking lot in the 3700 block of Rosecrans Street, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.Officers and paramedics responded to the scene and were directed to the 31-year-old victim, who had suffered trauma to his upper body, Brown said.The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m., the lieutenant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors voted 4-1 today to have the chief administrative officer direct the Health and Human Services Agency to develop a plan for in-house medical care of jail inmates and possible outsourcing of those duties as well.Sheriff Bill Gore will review the plan, and officials will also put out requests for proposals from private contractors to handle those duties.Supervisor Dianne Jacob made the motion to examine both an in-house model and outsourcing.``I don't think we should go with just one approach,'' Jacob said, adding she is a proponent of outsourcing county services, if it results in good service for less money.Gore has cited his department's million annual health care bill for inmates as a reason to explore cost-saving strategies. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man smashed a display case at a Mira Mesa jewelry store and stole several necklaces, police said Tuesday.The theft was reported shortly after 6:50 p.m. Monday at Daniel's Jewelers in the shopping center near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Camino Ruiz, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man entered the store and smashed a glass display case with a hammer, Buttle said, adding that the thief did not threaten the employee.The thief then grabbed several necklaces from the display case and fled in an unknown direction, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 Black man in his late 20s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal authorities said today that a woman who fled federal custody and ran into a crowd of protesters was later taken to a hospital after she became distressed during the confrontation.The incident occurred Saturday in the 220 block of West C Street near the gate into the Western Region Detention Center. The woman's escape and the following confrontation between federal agents and protesters was captured on video and widely shared on social media, garnering over 15,000 views as of Monday.According to the San Diego office of the FBI, the woman -- who was arrested on suspicion of dealing methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl -- opened the rear passenger door of an unmarked car while handcuffed.She then allegedly ran into a nearby crowd that was protesting police brutality. Agents pursued the woman and regained custody, while the crowd of protesters surrounded the agents and the woman, the FBI reported.Protesters then confronted the two agents who pursued the woman, officials said. Video recording shows a crowd of around 50 protesters attempting to separate the woman from the FBI agents by pulling at her and the agents, until the woman becomes distressed and suffers a seizure.Protesters then encircled the woman and blocked the agents from her. A member of the protesting group designated as a medic then assists the woman, according to the video.The two agents, who wore civilian clothes, walked back to their car near the San Diego jail and called for medical assistance, the federal authorities reported.Paramedics responded to the scene along with a large police presence, which separated protesters from the woman.
